Tutorial does not really explain the function of the software. There is no video tutorial on youtube. Rendering in the output-module does not work. So you export a file with contents you have not seen. Without live output rendering the software is useless. Edit 08.06. The rendering in output-module works now. Thank you for the support. I will check the programm in the next view weeks. I´ll give a quick review after testing.
A very cool idea, that I'd be happy to pay for if not for the fact that too much work still needed for it to be usable. 1. Additional nodes; - like for example a node to create solid angle gradients with multiple modes; - or/and a node to reproject photometric data from a picture + parametric ways to create pictures to reproject from. etc. 2. More modes for mix node (at least add Subtract) 3. Fix rendering and export node so that to preview changes in the graph you don't need to delete and recreate it every time. 4. Shortcuts and menus (Backspace to delete a node = heresy) 5. Architecture. You don't need multiple processes to do what this thing does. It's not Chrome, cool. Moreover, they persist after I close the app and i think you have a memory leak somewhere in there. Bad. Very bad. I hope this recent 20k grant will help you to whip this thing into shape because it really can become a very good addition to any CG toolbox.

It's an excellent idea, but as it is now, it feels impossible to use. The tutorial barely even tells you how to create nodes, and I cannot find ANYTHING about how to edit any elements for an actual output.
This soft seems limited and it crashes sometimes. But it's free, and I was able to create some basic IES lights for my tests. So I give a thumb up to encourage more development.
Before I played CNDL, I had a small pp, no friends, no gf, depression, and no life. These things havent changed, but the game is pretty good
Система для создания трассировки света. Полезно для создания игр
CNDL - Free Lighting Tool With Significant Limitations
A specialized utility for IES profile creation - not a game CNDL is a software tool designed to create IES lighting files for 3D rendering and game development. Before anything else - this is not a game. It's a niche utility for specific professional workflows.
What You Actually Get
The base software is completely free on Steam. There's a "Professional" DLC available, but it does not add any features - it's simply a way to financially support the developer. All functionality exists in the free version. A tutorial exists on the official website: cndl.io/tutorial. The software can also be downloaded directly from GitHub if the Steam version becomes unavailable.
Compatibility With Other Software
CNDL creates standard IES files that work with most modern renderers and game engines. According to the developer, the tool should integrate seamlessly with software like Blender, Unity, Unreal Engine, and LuxCoreRender. You can check the full compatibility list here. If your software supports the IES format, this tool should theoretically work with it.
My Honest Assessment
The concept behind CNDL is interesting. Creating custom IES profiles should be valuable for lighting artists. However, the execution leaves significant room for improvement. Basic functionality feels harder to grasp than expected, and the learning curve feels steeper than it should be. Development activity appears to have stopped around 2020. The developer mentioned plans to remove this from Steam, though it remains available for now. This raises questions about long-term availability and support.
Pros And Cons

✅ Completely free for educational and hobby use.
✅ All features available without purchasing DLC.
✅ Unique tool for IES lighting profile creation.
✅ Can be downloaded from GitHub if Steam version disappears.
✅ Official tutorial available on the developer website.
✅ Compatible with popular software like Blender, Unity, and Unreal Engine.

❌ Tutorial quality is poor - doesn't properly explain software functions.
❌ No video tutorials available on YouTube or other platforms.
❌ Rendering and export features have bugs and inconsistencies.
❌ User interface feels unintuitive for newcomers.
❌ Limited node options compared to what users might need.
❌ Keyboard shortcuts are inconvenient (Backspace to delete nodes).
❌ Processes may persist after closing the application.
❌ No active development or support since 2020.
❌ Product may be removed from Steam in the future.
❌ Live preview functionality has been reported as unreliable.

Final Thoughts
CNDL represents an interesting idea that never quite reached its potential. For users willing to troubleshoot issues and work around limitations, the free price makes it worth experimenting with. However, don't expect polished professional software. Those needing reliable lighting tools for critical projects should consider more established alternatives. This might work for hobbyists with patience and time to debug problems. ⚖️ Recommendation: Try It If You're Curious - But Keep Expectations Low. 🎨 Best for: Hobbyists and students willing to tolerate bugs.
