This is a very good VN! Please check it out! Full disclaimer: I was sent a free copy of this VN by the dev a few months before it released to help check for bugs/typos. Unfortunately, I was pretty terrible at this job, and I forgot to report the typos I found to the dev, then got a new laptop shortly after I played through the VN, so the notes I did make got lost... RIP In any case, I'm not actually part of the dev team, and I didn't make any proper contributions to the VN, so my opinion is unbiased. I enjoyed reading through Chronotopia a lot! It's a pretty dark VN which is comprised of a lot of fairytales/fairytale elements stitched together, with a dose of time travel and ~suffering~ The main character, Kionna, starts out as an unworldly, innocent young princess who's not too dissimilar from your typical Disney heroine. She's just whiling away her time in the castle, wanting to live peacefully, until [a sequence of increasingly horrible things happen, the exact nature is redacted because spoilers] Kionna goes through a lot of very noticeable development throughout the story, and it was my favourite part of the narrative. She's a multi-faceted character for sure, and while she initially seems pleasant, in a slightly bland way, you get to see her be tactless and arrogant (when she interacts with a farming family of a much lower status than her), anxious and browbeaten (when she learns what it's like to live as a servant), and resourceful and cunning (when she learns a little more about running a kingdom). Kionna has a lot of facets to her, but her core always remains consistent. Chronotopia might be a dark fairytale, but at its heart it feels more like an in-depth character study. It's about putting its heroine, Kionna, into various scenarios, with various people from different walks of life, and seeing how she responds to them. Throughout the story, her beliefs are shaken, as she learns that even poor farmers can be righteous, morally upstanding people, whilst handsome princes aren't always what they're cracked up to be. I really can't praise Chronotopia enough for Kionna as a character; I hope more people will check out this VN so they can meet her too! The art in this VN is also lovely. The characters have a lot of outfits (especially Kionna; some of her dresses are so pretty!), and there's a huge slew of backgrounds which depict various seasons. Some of the backgrounds have subtle animation effects, like falling snow, autumn leaves, and dancing dust motes, which really serve to make the world the characters inhabit feel more alive. The music is also fantastic, which works well with the fairytale atmosphere! Visually and audioly(?), it's a very polished title! If I had to list some gripes with the VN, it would be that I think the romance routes feel a bit lacking compared to the main plot, and they felt a bit tacked on. I also think the side characters are less interesting than Kionna, and they have a little less depth, but that's alright. Kionna is such a strong leading lady, I don't think it matters too much that she outshines all the others. In fact, I think that's a testament to just how good her character is! I will also note that the writing felt a little clunky in places, but I read an older version of the script which has probably been cleaned up since then. I never struggled to understand what was being said, and I do think the somewhat 'stiff' nature of the prose actually added to the fairytale fantasy vibe; at points it made the story feel more otherworldly. (Also, the stray typos I spotted would have been cleaned up if I'd actually reported them to the dev oops, so I think this is partially my fault haha.......) The gripes I have with Chronotopia are slim on the whole, though. I genuinely loved experiencing this VN, and it kept me hooked in a way few VNs do. I managed to read this for 11 hours without being bored or losing interest, and that says a lot, since a lot of VNs with much bigger budgets can't pull that off haha So, yes, buy this! A lot of love was poured into this VN and it really does show!!! Please give it a shot; I'm sure you won't be disappointed!
My blood is calling a witches' song Tears are falling from the sky You are my shadow and my star My past and my future unite Karliene (Feat.Roxane Genot) - Desire And Fear (і далі)
Come, come to mе My heart was calling long before I mеt you Some conjuring I feel my magic every time I'm with you
You found the magic in me Storms of desire and fear And all that was never revealed Is now so clear
Chronotopia has a lot of cool tricks up its sleeves. It starts off as a fairly typical fairytale retelling of Donkeyskin but quickly establishes its own style and spin on the concept: Kionna's story quickly deviates from the most well-known version of the story as she attempts to find her perfect ending, and I couldn't help but root for her as I watched her story unfold and her character evolve. In general, I tend to be wary of modern/new takes on fairytales. They are easy to get very wrong by making simple stories feel simplistic rather than exploring why these simple stories endure and evoke such strong emotions in readers. Chronotopia smartly avoids a lot of these pitfalls, first of all, by establishing the authors' extensive knowledge of European fairytales and folklore. The game relies on (with added documentation in the bonus section of the menu) dozens of attested variations on Donkeyskin, Cinderella, and other much less well-known stories to create a universe that feels both very grounded in actual details of medieval France and Italy as well as steeped in fairytales (pretty much every detail comes from one story or another, and it's delightful to chase these influences while following the narrative). It's not all perfect, especially at the beginning: there is a quite long and mostly irrelevant framing device that bogs down the start of the story, which means it took me a while to really immerse myself in the world. But I would encourage anyone intrigued by the premise (or wanting to learn more about European folklore) to give it a try.
I knew this game was dark, but it still caught me off guard. Before, I had limited knowledge of the Donkeyskin fairytale. And even then, my prior knowledge came from The Wolf Among Us. I originally backed it on Kickstarter, because it's not often I see characters that look like me, with sapphic love interests, no less! But it was the story that really roped me in. At first, I was inclined to romance Nahima, but by the end of her route I was eager to go for the fairy godmother instead. And she's my favorite love interest in the story, despite the final lover being more of the ideal ending and pairing. Wasn't really feeling that guy, though he was a far better match than the princes. I won't get too in detail about other aspects of the story or paths, but if you're worried about triggers, I def recommend checking those out before you play. That aside, I was pleasantly surprised to see some asexual and trans rep! The former wasn't much of a surprise, but the latter was. It was fairly subtle, too. Oh, and the archive lists numerous references to fairy tales that inspired the main story. There were a few I weren't familiar with, such as the shapeshifting near woman. So if you like dark fairytales, toxic romance (the princes are major yikes factor), and the relief of a happy ever after, I highly recommend this VN.
Chronotopia is a very solid visual novel that I struggle to describe as anything else than an ode to women. And I don't mean that in a restrictive #allwomenrule #girlboss way. Chronotopia an ode to self-discovery, resilience, friendship, love between women and camaraderie. The game can be really brutal at some moments, it *is* after all a retelling of a pretty dark fairytale dominated by the threat of incest, and I think the time loop "mechanic" is used in a very interesting and rewarding way. It made me think of Elsinore, another quality retelling (of Hamlet, this time) that centers around Ophelia and also features time rewinding as a main feature. Check it out if you enjoyed this game! In any case, seeing Kionna/Donkeyskin evolve, be naive, arrogant, lonely, daydreaming, devoted, paranoid, jaded, confused, sometimes all of these at the same time, was very interesting. You can empathise with her but as a reader you are very much asked to maintain a distance with her, to criticize her actions when needed. You’re rooting for her but she's very much her own character, at all times. Although the game doesn't pontificate on what's right or wrong, the themes are pretty obvious and well-woven throughout the story, including in the endings, which are detailed and varied, and overall very satisfying. The long length is definitely a huge draw as each route is given time to breathe and build to its climax: as a result of this pacing, you'll find yourself experiencing a large breadth of emotions while playing Chronotopia! The VN fully benefits from very high value sprites, CGs and backgrounds. The art truly is impeccable and immersive, I loved the diversity of outfits, the semi-realistic style of the backgrounds and the variety of facial expressions in particular. It really does feel like reading a fairytale book with gorgeous illustrations. The soundtrack is also very nice, the fairy's theme being the absolute highlight for me, I stopped reading every time she appeared to listen to it! I do have some minor gripes, however. The first is that I read the VN in French (French fairytale, French developer), and although the language used is generally eloquent and the story itself engrossing, I did see a high number of grammatical mistakes (mostly participles staying in the masculine although they should be in the feminine form). Luckily the game is good enough that it doesn't break immersion too much but additional proofreading really would have been welcome. Thankfully, due to grammatical differences, I can only suppose the English version doesn't have similar problems. The second concerns the idea of adding a meta prologue/epilogue, which I am not sure brings much to the story overall. I respect the choice to include it and it's intriguing at first, but really failed to interest me overall, especially compared to how engrossing Kionna's tale is. What else is there to say? If you like fairytales, Chronotopia is for you. If you like stories made by women, for women, Chronotopia is for you. If you like to witness subtle character growth in stories that deal with difficult topics in an in-depth and respectful way, Chronotopia is for you! It's also very fun at times so be reassured that it's not doom and gloom in there, far from it. A lot of care and love was poured into the making of this game, and it shows everywhere. I backed this game a very long time ago on Kickstarter and I know it took a while to come out but I'm happy to say the final product delivers. To the developers: Bravo!
If you, like me, are fairly ignorant of classical fairytales, don't worry; although themes and story beats are clearly inspired by a menagerie of them (all of which are helpfully summarized in the game's archives), they are woven together into an engaging and believable narrative that stands on its own. Familiarity with the source materials is nice, I'm sure, but in no way a prerequisite. At its core, Chronotopia is the story of a young princess named Kionna who finds herself stuck in a time loop, trying to escape a terrible fate. She starts out naive and immature, but as she makes various attempts to lead different lives (all of which culminate in some horrific manner), Kionna gradually grows and changes into someone who can truly earn her happy ending. Watching her growth over the course of the story was sincerely enjoyable, and perhaps the most exceptional facet of the game. The game's art is terrific as well; lots of beautiful sprites and backgrounds, great music (always an important aspect for me), and a UI that captures the fairytale aesthetic. There's also the occasional visual effect or flourish that really enhances the depth and feel of the game, especially at certain critical moments (no spoilers!) If you like time loops, classical fairytales, stories with a strong focus on character growth, or just plain beautiful VNs, don't miss out. There's a lot to love here.
I had written 4 paragraphs praising the game, but the page closed and it wasn't saved. Take my advice and buy the game, you won't regret it. It's a heart wrenching, beautiful, visual novel that pays tribute to dark fairy tales written in the medieval and renaissance times.
