I thoroughly enjoyed this entry from Choice of Games. There are some real, heartbreaking moments in this story which covers around 100 years (so far). Some of the reviews have been harsh and I am pleased I didn’t listen to the negativity I can only assume these reviewers didn’t own the DLCs for the complete game. I can see how just the base game would seem short and leave you unfulfilled. If you are a fan of history you will enjoy the historical fiction that puts you into the events of a country going through major growing pains. It gives you a bit of a ‘Forest Gump’ vibe as you are almost a time-traveler thrust into many of the most exciting and tragic historical events of the 19th century. There is plenty of player agency and your choices when developing your character changes how you need to approach the game and also which paths you can take. I recommend this game and give it a 7 of 10.
I used to like the "choose your own adventure" books growing up... so i guess i'm low maintenance as far as what i expect from a game. the writing kept my interest, and i could see some choices that i'd like to examine how it affects things if i choose differently next time. and i liked that it weaved the history through things, so i could see letting my older teen experience the game. i would recommend that if you like the trial version. to stop playing as soon as you decide to buy, as it seems that there's an issue with continueing the game from the trial to the full version. (I'm working with the devs to fix it, but guessing that it might require deleting the save file). note: i played the game to the end of the free trial, so at least 4 hours, maybe a lot more (i read slowly ;) )
very fun game to play when you want to pass some time.
I Love Choice of Games - This is Another Good Game!
I was almost a little worried about playing such an older game by these guys but I was in no way dissappointed. The detail put into the story and the many different choices you make really can play out differently each playthrough. I messed something up, restarted, chose to say or do something else, and ended up in a whole other experience. 200,000 words is quite a good chunk of time - I just hate how abruptly this game ended before shuffling you into the next game for this story, Fall of Memphis - which I will be playing soon enough to continue my vampire's story. It's just a really well written experience.
This is a really well written and indulgent game. I recommend it, but it is very long, and has the occasional bug where it starts you completely over at random. I was almost to the end I believe, unfortunately, being unable to truly save (there's an option at two points in the game but it doesn't work well) I can't bring myself to replay through the entire game again. It was great while it lasted.
Good
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaas!
+ nice details of american history with prominents + elaborate language + interesting NPCs - very much filler text - lots and lots of names and relationships. I was i need of taking notes on every name, since they show up again in later chapters - many of your choices seem to have almost no effect at all - one time you're mighty against others and the next situation you're weak in the same disciple. You have no idea how strong you are and what choice you can trust - many story points are created but seldom they lead anywhere -> so many loose end's - the final battle was a joke. The whole battle i had NONE choices and at the end i got killed. My character reacted like a complete moron. Probably in the end that's for the best. Sum up: * If you enjoy reading and imagining in the history of America this game might be somehting for you. If you try to get a feeling how it's like to play a vampire through the times i wouldn't recomand this game. There are lot's of better games out there. Spare your time.
I have been following this game since 2014, and I have recently picked it up again with the new update. I consider that it is a very good game. It can be a little linear for a game of this nature, and many consider it to be a historical lesson. As someone who enjoys history, I quite enjoy it. It has a lot of replay value, as there are many secrets and many combinations that you can experiment with to make discoveries, whether you are on your first playthrough or your 20th, or your hundredth. There are two factors that I believe make this story as good as it is. The historical aspect, and the characterisation aspect. For the historical aspect, the story can get dark. As is the history of the United States, and as vampires tend to be portrayed in media. You are in the developing United States, and you get to watch as the Native Americans are robbed of their homeland, the Confederacy is broken (for better or for worse of those around you), the horrors of slavery and disease. This is not counting the fantasy aspect, in which you can be as cruel or as good as you please. This game is the culmination of almost a decade of studying history, and re-writing it into a beautiful mosaic. This is the part that you may not impact as greatly, as the causality of our history could never be steered away from what it is now. In addition, this aspect is truly long. Speedrunning this takes me 4 hours if I am paying a little bit of attention to enjoy the story, from beginning to end. This is not a game to rush through, but to allow yourself to be swept in the streams of history. For the characterisation aspect, you are given a lot of freedom for how you wish to approach anything. Whether you wish to be a vampire that guides mortals as a shepherd despite your affliction, or a wolf that gives in to the beast, foaming at the mouth as you murder the innocent, this game allows a wide variety of roleplaying potential. This is the aspect in which you have control, and you can watch as your weakling slowly grows into the leech of horror everybody knows you can be. This is about as friendly as the history can allow. You have many options of how you can play and approach situations, and almost every stat has significance. Overall, I understand that this game has a fairly niche fanbase. Choose your own adventure games are niche. And history can also be fairly niche. As can vampires. However, as the first two volumes are free, I feel that it is worth a look for anybody who even slightly enjoys any of these aspects! I will be awaiting the fifth, sixth and seventh volumes with anticipation, and I fully recommend that anybody who is curious tries it!
Es un buen juego de vampiros, mi unica queja es que mori de repente en St. Louis y el juego no me dio una explicación del porque.
