DO NOT BUY. Not finished product. Years ago this game was available as a free preview, requesting a price for next playable chapters of story. That's OK. Now I bought it on Steam and after I played first two chapters it asks for money after end of chapter 2. May be now demo-version ends earlier, I don't care.
I'm a massive fan of other 'choice of' games (robots, pirate, etc.) but honestly I was kind of disappointed by this one. I had fun playing this for an hour or so, then lost interest in the game. There are lots of pros and cons, so I'll go through both of them. Pros: -Really in depth character background maker, with decisions that don't shove you into a gender binary decision -Options in dialogue and actions are both impacted by your character's tendencies and their skills Cons: -Pages vary from massive block text to single sentences, limiting the flow of the story -The flow of the story is all over the place, ranging over a massive period of time without letting you impact the story -Your choices are often immediately contradicted by the narrative and become useless, making me wonder why this is even a choice based game -Many skills are entirely useless and are either not used frequently enough to be worth investing in or just don't do much for the story -The game feels incomplete since you have to buy the next installment to continue the story, and most of the story revolves around a war that happens around you and of which you have no impact.
I've experienced three losses of progress by what seemed to be bugs and while the story is somewhat amusing to go through, it certainly wears thin when gone through several times in quick succession. Especially so knowing that this could've no doubt been prevented by a simple save state - something deliberately not provided as part of the game design. Horrible decision.
This is seriously the best Choice of Game i have played. And as a VtM fan with only afew changes it would be the best VtM game ever, the writing is amazing, the stories are great, the characters are fantastic and iv played it multiple times and each time had a unique story and character. Jason Stevan Hill is a outstanding writer and makes the world come to life. If Night Road made you wanna puke with its atrocious ..everything, this game will revive you, give you a refreshing drink of blood, wink at you and tell you not to lose hope. Buy this game, you wont regret it.
Reviewing (mostly) every game (or DLC) in my library, part 477: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆☆☆☆☆☆ (4/10) Choice of the Vampire is one of the earliest games in the CoG franchise, and I'm a big vampire fan. The fact that I ended up refunding this is kinda a bummer. The premise is super compelling: you awaken as a newly made vampire in early 19th-century New Orleans, a city alive with music, sin, and revolution. Over the decades, you navigate moral decay, racial tension, and immortal politics, shaping both your personal fate and America’s emerging identity. It’s ambitious, historically rich, and dripping with atmosphere. And yet … for all that potential, Choice of the Vampire feels strangely lifeless. The writing is elegant and the history is fascinating, but the story itself forgets to make you, as the player, matter. It wants to be a serious historical epic and a personal vampire story, but in trying to balance both, it ends up doing neither particularly well. The writing is undeniably good—sometimes even beautiful—but it’s sterile. You can admire it from afar, but it never lets you in. It's an atmospheric, literary take on vampirism that doubles as an American historical commentary. But I was more hoping for a character-driven, emotionally resonant story. 🕯️ Pros:

Gotta give credit where it’s due. Vampire absolutely nails its setting. New Orleans in the 1800s feels way more realistic than any of my high school's history books. The language is florid, the social divides are stark, and the tone of decay and transformation lingers in every scene. The author clearly did his research, and there's surprisingly a lot of historical detail: religious conflict, racial hierarchy, the tension between old European traditions and the New World. Super cool.
No flashy vampire tropes. There’s no Twilight-style melodrama or constant bloodlust; the immortality here feels way more grim and burdensome. There are moments when the writing shines: like a beautifully described sunrise you’ll never see again, or a philosophical reflection on what it means to outlive everyone you love.
Great stats. Not only do you have your usual strength/intelligence/dexterity, there's also artistry, stealth, languages, and so on. There's even a money/income system, which I wish was more present.
⚰️ Cons:

The biggest problem is its complete lack of emotional investment. For a story about immortality, power, and identity, there’s very little to actually feel. You make choices—big ones, even—but the story consistently forgets them. Twice,
my lovers died
but I seriously didn't care. There's little time spent with your companions, let alone romance options.
Pacing. Hmm. There's a lot of paragraphs about bank defaults, the war, and racial politics—dense, often fascinating topics. But instead of connecting those themes to your personal story, the game keeps them at arm’s length. It becomes more of a dry history lecture than an interactive experience. You stop playing and start reading about things happening around you is the best way to put it.
While I totally get the author needs to pay the bills, the absence of an ending isn't great. The $6 I paid for gives me the first two out of four acts. However, after the second act, you reach a certain point in the story, and the text suddenly tells you to “save your name for the next installment.” While there is a sequel, the first (second?) game doesn’t feel like a complete narrative experience on its own. I admit I got this one because I was a fan of Anne Rice back in the day. It's a very good way to pass the time if you want to play something but not get too involved in an RPG or FPS type thing. The plot line wasn't bad but, for me, the writing itself could have been a bit stronger. But then again I'm quite picky in matters of fiction. Definitely worth a sale price if you like text/choose your own adventure games.
The story had plenty of potential, but things moved too quickly. You never really had a chance to explore powers, and the intrigue felt very surface level. The second DLC was completely abysmal compared to the first two stories. Randomly you scream, and I truly do mean randomly there was no reason behind this, "I will now announce my true gender to the world" I'm guessing that's because when choice of vampires came out CoG did not have their political guidelines written and shoved up the butt of every writer.
This game has enjoyable story where your choices actually feel impactful with interesting characters and the writing is good, these things together would make for an awesome game. However there's more The game has a lot of paths which while great, makes 1 playthrough very short. And the last thing which alone regardless of anything, makes this game a complete trash. The overall story consists of 4 volumes, the base game consists of volume 1 and 2, there is a dlc that gives volume 3, and there is another one which gives volume 4. Each of these dlcs cost the same as base game. So as to say to buy the full game/complete story you have to pay 3x times the base price.
This is not a complete game. It only allows you to play 2 chapters before requiring the DLC, which is 5.99, then another DLC for another 5.99. The content is not worth the headache of requiring the purchase of 2 extra DLC that it isn't upfront about. I wish I read the reviews before I purchased this.
With the dlc this is probably something like a 200 page book. Spanning about a century, you start as a newly born vampire during the war of 1812, on the outskirts of a battle. You build a character than can vary from being very charming and charismatic (what I did) to focus on politics or it looks like you can focus on finances, supernatural powers, stealth, combat and various other facets. The game tracks your relationships with dozens of characters and at least through my first play-through, it seemed like the content was finished (as opposed to many choose your own books out there). Will note that this game appears to be under development and for me at least, ended after about a century. Looking at the forums, the developer does appear very active and is still writing/developing new chapters. I did have trouble really understanding the economy dynamics of the game, but my first character ended with over $2 million around 1900, so I suppose I navigated it well enough. I mostly had no idea the size of my investments and individual returns or profits of various opportunities. It would be great to see a finance breakdown somewhere - but I don't think finance is the primary aspect of the game. :)
