This is a quality Yoshi's-Island-like. We need more Yoshi's-Island likes. <3 Especially when they're as good and as charming as this one. That's not to say it's copying its inspirations - of which is has quite a few! No; this is doing its own thing while still feeling nostalgically-familiar...a great blend~ This is not a terribly-long or difficult game, but it's totally fun from start to finish. It's pretty focused in that regard; every level introduces some new idea/s, aesthetics are never overused. It feels lean, controlled, the fat cut; as if it could be longer if it wanted to start reusing ideas and concepts, but it didn't really want to, so it didn't~ I can respect that. Thanks to some nice conversations I had directly with the dev (as well as myself discovering a test room), I'm aware there are many concepts and mechanics that were cut. Again, I can respect the dev's commitment not to pad out the game...as many devs would do the opposite. It does make we wonder, however, if this game might be worthy of a DLC later on? I do wish it was longer and I really wouldn't mind some re-use or expansion of existing elements in a harder setup, especially considering that there is actually some advanced movement tech that serves little purpose in the current levels. But I say all of this because of how much I enjoyed my time with it. It IS easy, its toughest levels far easier than Yoshi's Island's; it can leave you wanting more of a challenge once you've beaten the game. But that's really the worst thing I can say about it: That it leaves you wanting more, because it's fun~ I think it's still very much worth its asking price, but if you're hesitant about its length (in my listed playtime, I managed to both 100% the game as well as spend time recording a bonus video going over all of its secrets and tricks), I'd say to wait for a sale. (Oh, and I definitely appreciate the 100% reward, which I won't spoil here. It's not groundbreaking, but it gives you a reason to mess around revisiting the stages just to try out what you've earned.) This is not the dev's first game, but it is their first Steam game release. I hope it goes well for them! I see great potential in their future games, since they clearly know how to put their heart into what they make.

Now just one look alone can show you what Chirax's fortress was inspired by - the SNES era of games and particularly Yoshi's Island. I think it captures the feeling of these games perfectly in terms of art direction and style, but also does a lot of unique things such as later on in the game where Chirax gets the ability to throw her heads into the background as an attack. The story is simple but cute, a dragon is trying to save her hatchlings from knights who are causing problems. I think the reversal of the typical dragon/knight dynamic was very unique and refreshing as well. The boss fights felt very climactic as well! However there are some issues I had with the game. Namely the heads being your health bar as well as an attack. It didn't cause me much issues in the early game, but it becomes troublesome at the final boss as he is difficult to hit and you are expected to dodge a lot of stuff at once and also not fall into instant death holes, making it take forever to actually kill him with just one head or worse yet, if you have no heads you cannot attack at all. I also found the flap mechanic was a little slippery. I can safely say that I encountered no technical problems or bugs while playing this game, and it ran beautifully on the steam deck as well. Overall, despite the flaws I outlined, it's a pretty solid indie platformer that deserves your attention.
Very charming tribute to Yoshi's Island with a lot of it's own original ideas and amazing music!
Incredibly charming, Super cute art style, banger music, very cool mechanics and easy to grasp controls, and you can tell it was made with a lot of compassion and love. Honestly would recommend this game to anyone who likes platformers, I had a ton of fun playing and streaming this game! (and even holding the world record on flight contest! 13395! high score!!)
A very cute Yoshi's Island-like game! Absolutely fell in love with Chirax.
It's very cute!! I would say that style is this game's biggest strength. It's one of those games that are short and satisfying to 100% (took me about 4 hours since i accidentally left it on for 3 hours halfway through). The collectibles are fun to find, and the movement actually has more depth than it lets on at first... Recommended to anybody who likes cute games and platformers!!
Really fun and creative platformer! I feel like a lot of indie games try to “stand out” by being really difficult and this game is rather forgiving in a good way. Platforming is still a challenge to overcome but never too much. It’s well balanced imo. I found a lot of the enemies and obstacles to have fun designs as well. The game is short and sweet but I’d absolutely enjoy more.
A short and very charming game which wears it's Yoshi's Island inspiration well, it captures that style wonderfully! The movement felt pretty good and I really enjoyed playing through the whole thing! Some of the worlds are quite inspiring with cool ideas and themes! It can be a little rough around the edges though, with some levels feeling a bit too short. Though there are some nice twists, I really wish a lot of the mechanics were played around with more as they have a lot of potential! Overall, a really charming and enjoyable little game!
What an adorable game. As someone who loved Yoshi's Island, I really enjoyed seeing how this game took inspiration from it. Instead of eggs, you throw your own heads though! There's an incredible amount of detail in here. Almost every stage introduces something new. Sometimes it's new mechanics, sometimes it's new enemies or bosses. The difficulty curve is quite nice as well. While world 1 starts out rather straight forward, already in world 2 the level designs start to get more intricate and finding the right path can be a challenge in itself. Sprinkled in is the hunt for collectibles and even a handful of mini games if you enjoy these things. It's all very charming and feels so 90s.
If you love SNES platformer classics like Super Mario World, you'll probably love this game.
You play a hydra mom rescuing her hatchlings across a beautiful 2D world with 3D elements and 8 fun boss fights. Playing Chirax's Fortress especially feels like stepping straight into a classic SNES game. The game is completely hand-drawn in beautiful pixel art style graphics and uses NO soulless, run-of-the-mill AI generated graphics. I love the animations, soundeffects and the music. Exploration is rewarding, the enemies are interesting, and the game never feels unfair. I haven't found many frustration traps. I had a blast from start to finish, and it’s also very kid-friendly, making it great for all ages. Only drawback: I wish this game had an adjustable window mode. I highly recommend playing Chirax's Fortress. Great game!
