TL;DR All versions work well except for the SNES version due to a (very loud) audio bug with the in-built emulator. If having access to these 6 versions of chips challenge is worth $25 to you, then go for it. Review This is meant as an objective review about this release, since at the time of writing there are no other reviews. This also isn't a review of chips challenge as a game. Chips challenge is a very good and challenging game and I recommend you check out a different version of it. --- The Facts --- I had no problems with Atari Lynx, Commodore 64, Commodore Amiga, Sega Mega Drive, or ZX spectrum versions. The SNES version however, distorted all sound from the game and it was very loud. I think this was a bug with whatever emulator is being used. This pack includes the ROM files, so I was able to load the SNES ROM from the game directory into snes9x and it worked fine with no audio bugs. --- The Opinion --- I really don't think this game is worth $25 especially considering the SNES versions audio is broken. But even if they fix that issue, I just don't think you can justify selling 6 versions of a 30 year old game for that much. I'm not sure how that price point was reached, but I think it's too high. The interesting portion of this chips challenge bundle for me was the SNES and Sega Mega Drive versions. Both of these versions are actually brand new. It looks like they were developed and released through the retro room sometime in the last year. related video So with that, the reason I purchased this collection was in hopes that it included the SNES and Sega Mega Drive ROM files. Which it does. So I'm satisfied enough not to refund it. In short If you are also looking for the SNES and Sega Mega Drive ROM files like I was, then you have come to the right place. (In fact I think this is the only place to get the ROM files) If you were just wanting to play chips challenge for fun. Then maybe look at the other chips challenge versions on steam. If you were wanting to play this version out of nostalgia for the older versions, then I would wait for a sale.
Recommended ONLY if you want a way to play the SNES and Genesis versions on an EverDrive or if you want a way to play this game on your Steam Deck (since the Windows version is unsupported). Even then, I would only recommend this at a discount. $24.99 is a bit steep for a compilation of various ports with a bare-bones menu interface. As the reviewer before me said, the emulator for the SNES version has an audio bug where it plays nothing but loud static. Also, in the Genesis version, every time you teleport, a command prompt window appears on screen saying "KDEBUG MESSAGE: teleport", which gets in the way of the game. If you close this window, it crashes the game. Unless you want to play this on an EverDrive or a Steam Deck, I would get the free Windows version instead.
I always wondered what this classic plays like on the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It's a shame it has some graphical glitches and save state corruption. At least the password system still remains, so there is a back up.
Guys need not bad people saying first off rip rom filed go data and form thier do that load snes or Sega Genesis Ver og game on wat batter emulator but game playable and on sale like $12 or less they worth it.
