Chester One is a very flawed platformer and yet it has a lot of unique qualities. Despite having 236 achievements it is not one of those achievement only games. In fact, there is plenty of content like different worlds with multiple stages and hidden collectibles. The game offers 12 specialized characters with unique auto-attacks and special abilities. Certain chesters will do better against enemies depending on damage type and situation. Also, there is a very cool mechanic that allows you to change the look of the game. Every skin also affects the world in different ways depending on passive bonus. Not to mention that game just looks very unique, kinda like a sketchbook. The difficulty can be pretty high but you can lower it. If you decide to beat the game on harder mode the game rewards you with extra unlocks. Partial controller support worked well enough for me on F310. All of the characters can gain levels which make their abilities more powerful. If you are having too much trouble then just grind and unlock more characters. I really like the synergy with certain abilities, like using a shield on one chester and then switching to another. The platforming gameplay is not exactly polished but it is serviceable. I have to emphasize the detail and aesthetic of the game, it reminds me a little bit of Earthworm Jim because of how silly the design is.
Pros:
+ unique aesthetic + stage skins that affect the world + lots of characters with different abilities + lots of content, hidden collectibles and unlocks + decent soundtrack
Cons:
- frequent crashes and glitches - visuals can make it hard to see - platforming gameplay is a bit clunky - sound effects can be annoying Overall Thoughts 6/10 I think at $3 the game has a lot to offer if you can tolerate some technical issues. Personally, I am just a huge fan of this kind of art style especially when stage skins have passive bonuses. Chester One took many risks and perhaps suffered in gameplay as a result. I appreciate that developers tried to make something a bit different. I guess it is one of those diamonds in a rough. Fun platform with a ton of collectibles and achievements, lets you keep playing a different style all the time. Great art style, or I should say art styles, as you can switch between a number of them. Also, cupcakes.
_____________8__88_____8 ____________88_8__8_____8 ___________888_____88___88888 __________8888______88_8____88 _________8888_______88______8_8 _________8888_______88______8_8 _________8888_______8_______8 _________8888_____8_______8 __________88888____8______8 ___________8888888______8 __888_________88888_8 8888888________88_____ _8888888_______8_____ __888888_______88_____ ___88_____8_____8_____ ____8______8____8_____8_88 _______8888_8__88_8_88888 _____888888_8_88__8888888 ____8888888__88______88888 ____88888_____8_________888 ____88_________8__________8 _____8_________8_____ _______________8_____ ____________8_8_____ _____________88_8_____ ______________88_____ ______________8_____

Angry video game nerd would have a field day ripping this game apart.
I participated in a reddit thread about this game, asking about 21:9 support and high framerate, and the dev offered me a free key to test it out! Good guy dev :). Anyway, the game is locked to 60fps. No biggie. But unfortunately at 21:9 this game is Vert-, meaning the top and bottom get cut off. Not a deal breaker though. The game itself is so good though! Zany and quirky, even the tutorial has fun flavor text and bleeds personality. Lots of collectibles as people say, and I'm loving discovering the wealth of diversity in different Chesters you can play (and switch between mid-level at will). +Platforming feels smooth and good +Visuals are pleasing in-game (Don't trust the screenshots, which make the visuals appear confusing) +Lots of unique levels (they're good so far, after 30 mins of playing) So yeah, most absolutely certainly worth $2-3 asking price. And a few moments of your time here and there :)
UPDATE: The developer has been very responsive to feedback and quick to make many fixes, so I am changing my review from a Thumbs Down to a Thumbs Up. I would say that it's really more on the positive side of neutral because of the remaining imperfections and frustrations in the gameplay, but I think that the price to content ratio (especially for achievement hunters), the unique aspects of the game, and the developer himself justify the positive review. ORIGINAL REVIEW: For a game that has been out since February of 2017 and is not in Early Access, there are just too many problems. I encountered several bugs: *Enemies got stuck in walls *Enemies often shot through platforms when they weren't supposed to *Changing the level effect (a modifier) made all platforms invisible *I had to replay the same level a couple of times to unlock achievements for taking no damage *Difficulty information in the options menu was concealed behind long sequences of the letter 'A' Then, wanting to change the controls, I found that I had to close the game, find its Steam folder, and open up an entirely different application just to do so. Unfortunately, I also found myself dissatisfied with the game when it worked properly: *The platforming is somewhat imprecise; in tight vertical corridors, for example, it is easy to end up wall jumping instead of simply falling, which can easily lead to damage from enemies *Some enemy types are rather obnoxious, e.g. the teleporters *Enemy placement is often equally obnoxious, especially for no damage runs *The player's own homing projectiles (the main attack of one of the unlockable characters) have a terrible time hitting moving targets even at max level. Sometimes they will even fly toward a target, then curve away at the last moment, shooting off toward nothing. *Enemies will sometimes fall from offscreen above the player *The level design doesn't feel particularly inspired and level difficulties seem all over the place *The visuals aren't particularly pleasant and sometimes the background conceals enemies, lasers, or the player by virtue of color or brightness It does have some good points: *Quite a few unlockable characters with unique abilities and sometimes traits *Characters can level up, which improves some of their stats or their special attack *Decent enemy variety *Collectible hunting and challenge completion unlock special features, from new characters to new game "modes" It's not unplayable and it's not expensive, but I can't recommend it. Much better platformers are available.
