About

Enter the ultimate arena of cerebral combat, where strategic thinking meets explosive fighting action! In this adrenaline-fueled online multiplayer game, you'll challenge other players to intense battles that fuse the classic game of Chess with heart-pounding fighting game mechanics.
With lightning-fast reflexes and an eagle-eye for strategy, you'll need to outsmart your opponents on the chessboard while unleashing devastating combos and special moves in the arena. Master the roster of fighters, each with their own unique fighting styles and chess piece abilities, all based on traditional fighting game archetypes (zoner, grappler, rushdown, etc).
Are you ready to become the Checkmate Showdown Grandmaster?
The Chess and fighting parts are intimately linked by design; once a piece attacks the opponent, a fight is engaged. The attacker and defender will be able to make use of tag-assist by other pieces in proximity, and the attacker will have an advantage by having their Ultimate ready to rip from the get-go.
Built with the diversity of gamers in mind, Checkmate Showdown will let newcomers have a good time with an approachable control scheme but will feature all of the depth and precision expected by professional FGC players. Easy to pickup, hard to master.

Checkmate Showdown will require a broad set of skills to become the best. Learn strategies for the board and elaborate combos in fights to make your way to the top. You will have to master every chess piece's skillset to truly become a master!
Your board placement is KEY for a strong endgame. By strategically placing your pieces on the board, you could benefit both from attackers advantage AND tag-assist(s), depending on how many pieces are within their movement range to support your square. As each chess piece corresponds to a fighting game archetype, the choice of attacking with one or the other will be crucial.
Checkmate Showdown is created by a team of hardcore fighting game enthusiasts who understand the importance of competition in fighting games. The game aims to feature the most up-to-date matchmaking technology and balancing to allow for friendly (or not) competition.
Based in the heart of Montreal, the development team thrives from its proximity to the local fighting game community. The game is made by fighting game enthusiasts for fighting game enthusiasts. Transparency in how we move forward is key to making this a community-built game. Whatever idea you have to help improve the game, we're ready to listen.

Does the game use rollback netcode?
We built the game using rollback netcode from the get go - we know how important that is and some of us are hardcore fighting game fans so it wasnt even a question.
I'm a hardcore fighting game enthusiast, will this game have all the bells and whistles?
Yes. Checkmate Showdown is made by a team comprising expert FGC players. Expect mixups, traditional strike-defense-throw triad, specials, cancels, combo breakers, guard break, etc.
I'm a newcomer to fighting games, but I love Chess. Will I still be able to play?
Yes! We designed Checkmate Showdown with an 'easy to learn, hard to master' philosophy. Button-mashers will be able to look good on-screen, while pros will find every bit of nuance they could want.
Are experienced Chess or fighting game players advantaged?
While traditional Chess strategies or massive fighting game skills will definitely shine in competitive rankings, one isn't advantaged over the other. An expert Chess player might get to your King fast, but they will have to use different strategies to truly master the game. Fighting game pros could just as well be taken off-guard by Chess-savvy opponents attacking them with an unexpected move, forcing them to use an already damaged piece in a tough fight.

i'm sure the devs are cool folks. what's here is lovingly made, but i just can't recommend very cool idea. not enough options for solo play, which sucks because online is dead even a difficulty slider would do wonders as it stands, i played a handful of solo games and crushed the NPC every time with my 400 ELO chess and bronze-tier FGC skills. without a solid playerbase or other options for solo play, i've literally seen every piece of content available to me in this game would really love to see the chess portion of the game be more than a glorified character select. the way you can tag in other piece attacking the same square is really cool, but the NPC isn't smart enough to set up cool pairings or play the long game. it just throws its guys into the blender that is me mashing light attack until it dies
Moves on the chessboard feel irrelevant. Doesn't force you to move out of check, which is weird. The fighting part against the ai Doesn't feel satisfactory. Online game is dead, literally zero opponents online. If you've finished one game, you've seen the whole game.
I wanted so badly to like this game because it's such an interesting concept. It has no player base and all of the achievements have online matchmaking requirements. The fighting feels really clunky and the moves on the chessboard feel kind of slow and overall irrelevant. There's no debuffs to attacked chess pieces either so chess skills mean nothing.
better than tekken 8

This game has a TON of potential. It's good as it is right now, but it could be SOOOO much better. I really hope the game blows up enough for the devs to want to continue it.
I think its a cute, fun game but I'd say get it on sale, not at full price. i cant imagine this game being worth it at full price which I believe was around $15 - $20 but I got it on sale for like $5. The chess aspect of the game is just chess. It reccomends Chess.com to improve overall chess skill which I thought was pretty funny but yeah, what can I say about chess that is interesting? I played on Controller and moving the pieces was better than I expected. Pieces look nice, I cant really think of a piece I dislike myself. The bishop is lackluster in my opinion but its nothing criminal. The fighting aspect of the game was fun, I thought but pretty simplistic. I looked at the list and it doesn't seem that in depth. It's basically a combo, quick stun with a pretty fun circle move. Keep in mind, I mainly only played against the bot because I am to much of a coward to play another real person. But each piece plays differently and each is fun. Like the knight can use a clone which, is similar to the king's minion move but also not really. This is the circle move which is my favorite as it can lead to fun combos and is just overall fun to use. The Bishop and the queen have similar circle moves but also, not really as they play and feel so differently. The bishop is an up-close fighter while the queen uses like a staff if my memory serves me right. The Rook is like a huge tan which is slow to play but fun nontheless even if I didn't enjoy it as much as the other classes. Finally, the king uses a hammer and isn't totally useless in this game as he can actually defend himself without the need for other pieces, it's just your ability to play fighting games that saves him. Thats a pretty fun aspect. Like if a bishop tries to take you "free" Knight, if you can beat the Bishop, your Knight gets to see the light of another day which makes the game pretty interesting and an interesting balance between normal chess skill and Fighting game skill which I do not have much of. The other game mode I played called chess 960 or something moves around the pieces and that's about all. It';s just a more messed-up version of normal chess. And you can also practice the fighting part but I don't have the patience to do that so... yeah. So I think it's fun. Thumbs up from me.
Disclaimers first, the queue's are empty for this game. It is a Discord fighter, meaning the Discord server is how you can get some games and have a good time. Secondly, the move lists aren't as accessible as I'd personally like but the controls are simple enough that it is a nitpick. This game has a certain weight and feel in tactics and fighting that gives it so much depth and life at every turn. The fighting is a bit more important than the chess, but the chess gives you a serious edge over an opponent that can turn a fight, or more importantly a series of fights, in your favor. Worth looking into if you're into both.
0 active players, 24 hour peak of 6, all time peak of 97. the game was dead on arrival. play it with friends every once and a while, otherwise don't bother. nice idea though.
Great and fun.... just if you want to play offline there is not much to do. Not even diffcculty switch... Wish it had a. arcade mode or something...
