Full controller support with this. Originally released on the Atari Lynx, Checkered Flag was a much improved Pole Position. The original price of an Atari Lynx was $179.99 in 1989. This game brought back memories. This game actually made me cry because of the memories. That's who this game is for. The environments, the sounds, the many tracks, the 10 race tournament mode and the recreation of a masterpiece. I believe there are 18 race tracks including 2 nighttime tracks. Thank you Pixel Games. I had a good cry.
A solid release of a Lynx classic, and a good addition to the library of any aficionado of old-school racing games.
Para quem deseja recordar corridas nostálgicas. Mesmo sendo simples e leve, pode proporcionar bons momentos de lazer.
Atari Lynx car game go vroom!
Epyx -> Handy -> Atari -> Lynx <3
Checkered Flag is a retro racing title that serves as both a nostalgic trip into the early days of handheld gaming and an interesting showcase of Atari’s ambitions in the racing genre. Developed by Atari and published by Atari in collaboration with Pixel Games UK for its modern release, the game originally arrived on the Atari Lynx and attempted to bring a Formula-style racing experience to portable hardware at a time when such technical achievements were far from common. The Steam version preserves the original game while introducing modern conveniences that make it easier for contemporary players to enjoy. The game places players behind the wheel of open-wheel race cars and challenges them across a selection of 18 different circuits. Rather than focusing solely on arcade-style action, Checkered Flag incorporates several features that were surprisingly advanced for its era. Players can participate in practice sessions to learn tracks, compete in individual races, or tackle full tournament modes that test consistency across multiple events. The inclusion of race customization options, adjustable race lengths, selectable vehicle colors, and various difficulty settings gives the game more depth than many racing titles released on handheld systems during the early 1990s. One of the most notable aspects of Checkered Flag is its attempt to balance accessibility with a more simulation-oriented approach. Success requires learning track layouts, understanding cornering techniques, and maintaining momentum through challenging sections of each course. While the handling model may feel simplistic when compared to modern racing simulators, it still offers enough challenge to keep players engaged. Sharp turns, aggressive opponents, and the need for careful speed management create races that reward patience and practice rather than reckless driving. The track selection is one of the game's strongest features. Each circuit offers its own layout and rhythm, encouraging players to adapt their strategies rather than relying on the same approach every time. As players become familiar with the courses, the game becomes increasingly enjoyable, rewarding memorization and precision. This emphasis on track mastery helps extend the game's longevity despite its relatively straightforward overall design. Visually, Checkered Flag reflects the technological limitations of its original hardware but remains impressive when viewed in its historical context. The pseudo-3D racing perspective successfully conveys a sense of speed, and the track environments create enough visual distinction to prevent races from feeling repetitive. Modern players may not be dazzled by the graphics, but retro gaming enthusiasts can appreciate the technical accomplishment represented by a handheld racing game that aimed to deliver a convincing simulation-like experience decades ago. The Steam release enhances the experience with several welcome quality-of-life improvements. Save states allow players to pause and resume progress whenever they wish, while controller support and customizable control options make the game significantly more comfortable to play on modern systems. Display settings, scaling options, and other emulation features help preserve the original presentation while making it more accessible on contemporary hardware. These additions ensure that the game remains playable without compromising its authenticity. Of course, the game's age is impossible to ignore. The artificial intelligence can feel predictable, the physics lack the sophistication expected from modern racing games, and the overall content is limited compared to contemporary racing titles. Players seeking extensive career modes, realistic vehicle customization, or cutting-edge graphics will likely find the experience dated. However, judging Checkered Flag solely by modern standards would overlook its significance as a product of its time and its role in demonstrating what handheld gaming technology could achieve during the early 1990s. Ultimately, Checkered Flag succeeds best as a preserved piece of gaming history. It captures an era when developers were experimenting with ambitious racing concepts on hardware that had significant limitations. The combination of multiple race modes, varied circuits, customization options, and competitive gameplay gave the original release a level of depth that helped it stand out among its contemporaries. While it may not appeal to every racing fan today, retro enthusiasts and Atari collectors will find value in revisiting this classic title and experiencing a notable chapter in portable racing game evolution.
