Change the World did one thing to anger me but it was a big thing. It lists multiple endings on the store page and while it’s not outright lying it also isn’t totally honest. There is really just one ending with a whole bunch of ways to fail getting that one ending. Every other ending is basically you getting killed or thrown in jail. I would have liked to see some actual branching with well thought out alternatives to the main ending. Past that there were some positives. The music was well done. I also really enjoyed the back and forth between Farlen and Izzy and wished there was more of it. The art style was also appealing and soft. The story was overall decent but what was impressive was the world building. There was an incredible amount of lore explored with various alien races; factions; rules; etc. I woudl certainly like to see the developer set more games in this universe. I played Change the World on Linux. It never crashed and I didn’t notice any bugs or spelling issues. You can manually save whenever you want and there are forty eight save slots. Alt-Tab didn’t work. Game Engine: Ren’Py 7.4.0.1167 Graphics API: OpenGL Disk Space Used: 137 MB Game Version Played: 1.0.5 GPU Usage: 0-88 % VRAM Usage: 672-1136 MB CPU Usage: 3-0 % RAM Usage: 3.0-3.3 GB It’s a tough call but while I liked the world building and Izzy I can’t get past the poor branching to recommend Change the World. It would have done better to market itself as a kinetic novel. It’s not a bad game but not what I was expecting. I finished it in eighty three minutes. For whatever reason, this visual novel just did not jive with me. Mostly because it's incredibly depressing getting a bad ending 3x in a row and getting punished for trying to do something. If the author intended for this, then spot on; however, it came at the cost of enjoyability. Though I guess already aligning with Farien's outlook didn't help either.
Want the good ending? Literally don't do anything anyone asks and then just be nice to the one human in the story.
The art is rather low key and despite claiming 20 music tracks, it felt too often that I was just reading in silence. Farien is also rather a douchebag. For someone with practically nothing left to lose, he sure as hell didn't prepare well enough in his 3 years to be ready. Took about 2 hours to read everything. The skip function seemed to be broken as it kept skipping unread text when it shouldn't have... but I somehow had autosaves when I first started, so maybe they just came with the download by default? Made re-reading a bit tedious.
The world building was really immersive and intriguing. The extensive backstory and exploration of the various alien races were really fascinating as well. The paths were really fun to explore, and the true ending was satisfying. I really loved the story
