Cat President: 3rd-Rate Candidate

As a citizen of said country (albeit not living there right now), I can confirm this to be true. Sadly, this is unlikely to be tested in our world. That is why I am pleased to say that we can at least see the results in the Cat President series. This includes its newest entry, which is titled Cat President: 3rd-Rate Candidate. Until this point, I had never played a game made by the devs of this series, who are known as Oh, a Rock! Studios. Despite being the third in the series, Cat President: 3rd-Rate Candidate (referred to as Cat President 3 from now on) doesn't require any knowledge of the previous games. I had a great time jumping in and embracing the chaos without worrying about anything outside of it. [h3]Story: In Which I Summarize a Wild Tail[/h3] Cat President 3 gives nice flexibility for your character and the cats they will encounter. You get to pick your first and last name, your pronouns, and the genders of the cats you date. The default name of your character is George Adams, so I'll call them George through this review, and refer to them and the cats with 'they' for sake of ease. You also get to name your best friend, whose default name is Thomas. The narrative starts with George being dragged to a political fair by Thomas. There they meet six cats that aspire to be the President of America. This makes perfect sense because humans were banned from being in politics. At Thomas' urging, George joins a raffle. They wind up winning it and becoming the campaign manager for one of the six felines. Though George is displeased at this due to disliking politics, they pick a cat and try to keep their candidate's political campaign running smoothly. The main dividing point for players who like this game and players who don't will boil down to the humor. I was cracking up at most of the game. If you're concerned about lack of political knowledge, don't be. This is a world where cats are ruling the United States of America, so the real world's current state of affairs doesn't matter. What does matter is whether players like the way the humor is portrayed. Since comedy is even more subjective than most genres, all I can say is that I thought the game was pretty darn funny. [h3]Characters: In Which I Introduce the Catnidates[/h3] Here are the six fluffballs that you can devote your heart to. Cardoon: The Vice President who now wants to be President. Don't worry, they would never try to get anyone killed to reach their goal. Finkle: A Sharpclaw who hates all other Sharpclaws. Loves being an internet troll despite most assuredly being a cat in real life. Jelly Jam: An unholy monstrosity that has the head of a cat and the body of a human. Lives for musicals and theatre productions. Nano: A scientist that does a lot of things FOR SCIENCE! Is never mentioned as being cross-eyed despite looking like they are. Pollytrix: A cat with heterochromia that acts like they have two different personalities. Their name absolutely does not give away the twist, why do you ask? Zeus: A super-hero obsessed cat who totally does not have an alter-ego named Superter. It's just a coincidence they're never on the screen at the same time. What I just listed above encapsulates their personalities without much more depth. That being said, when you follow their routes to the end, they do have some development. I found myself getting way more attached to most of the candidates than I expected. I also enjoyed Thomas, who is a good friend in all the routes. In addition to the six stars of the show and your best friend, there is an array of other kitties and humans that show up in each route. These side characters are usually contained to one route each, but they're certainly memorable despite their short screentime. Part of this is because the jokes they provide are funny and that makes them stick out, but it's also helped by the graphical style. See the below section for more details. [h3]Graphics: In Which I Describe the Hilarity of Cut-out Kittens and People in Funny Suits[/h3] The Cat President series uses pictures of real cats, humans, and whatever other creatures show up. The backgrounds are also photos of different locations, and a lot of them have amusing details if you look at them closely. Believe me when I say there are a ton of different character and background pictures. The cats and other animals have one image per critter, and humans have a variety of poses and expressions. This art style makes the game all the more ridiculous, and I absolutely love it. There's something about the clash of realism and absurdity that works beautifully. They give personality to the setting and each character, with the cast being made all the more memorable for each goofy portrayal. While I'd say the writing shows passion for this visual novel as well, these pictures really portray how much fun the dev had making this. [h3]Sound: In Which I Enjoy a Chorus of Meows[/h3] The music is perfectly suitable for its job. Some of it is quite amusing, especially the bombastic title theme and political fair music. Both of those tracks scream patriotism and would bring a tear to any American's eye. The rest is mostly made of up mild background tracks to give some pleasant tunes without standing out too much. Each of the six cats has a separate track that plays in their routes, which is a nice touch. I'd say the soundtrack overall does its job without being anything to write home about. What the sound design does right is the cat meows. The candidates have their own distinctive meows, and that's what's really important in a game like this. The screen for your route selection lets you move the mouse over all six quickly to mix up the meows, which I for one thought was true art. There are some pretty good noises mixed into the story as well, such as screeching and hissing that reminds you, in case you somehow forgot, that you are playing a game centered on cats. [h3]Gameplay: In Which I Pointlessly Talk about Gameplay in a Visual Novel[/h3] Each route has three endings. Your choices will decide which ending you get. This is based on how many 'right' and 'wrong' answers you pick. If you select the 'right' answer, a pleasant ding will tell you as much. A 'wrong' answer results in a low noise of disappointment. This makes it easy to keep track of which answers you will need for the best, middling, and worst endings. It's difficult for me to think of many flaws in Cat President 3. I suppose I'd say some of the jokes don't land, but that's almost always going to be the case, and the majority of them more than hit the mark for me. I did see some typos, and I did run into a small bug during my playthroughs. However, I reported these to the dev, and they were quickly fixed. I was impressed by the speediness and dedication to cleaning these up. In addition, the dev was friendly to talk to and always courteous, making it a pleasure to play and enjoy their game. [h3]Conclusion: In Which I Recommend this Game, Fur Real[/h3] Cat President 3 knows exactly what it wants to be and it succeeds in spades. You get to date kitties and make fun of politics. The game is much like the other two, very simple visual novels that have some very fun humor. I highly recommend this for all who love cats and enjoy the humor that was shown in the trailer and screenshots. The new features in this game include choosing your character's gender (including a nonbinary option), choosing the gender of the candidates (with a nonbinary option and also a "Let RNG decide" option), and the characters being able to blink. Oh, a Rock! has done wonderfully as per usual. This weird and absurd world of cats becoming president is one I personally love. I've been excited and eagerly waiting for the game from the game's confirmation, the casting call, the playtests, all the way up to the release. For full disclosure, I've received this for free to playtest before release. I hope you enjoy the VN as much as I've enjoyed playtesting it.

[b]You can't be fur real, Pollytrix is the cutest cat![/url] In Cat President: 3rd-Rate Candidate you play as yourself, but in an alternate world where pets can talk and humans were banned from politics many years ago. So who are the politicians? Well, cats and dogs of course! Though, we’re only focusing on those running for President, which seems to be mainly cats. The game starts with you and your best friend Thomas at the yearly State Fair, but this year is a bit different. After all, it’s election season and that means all the cats in the running are here to meet the voters! Not like you knew beforehand though, considering you don’t exactly like politics. Your best friend, Thomas, is a total nerd for it though and he convinces you to stay and meet the candidates with him. Granted, it required paying $10 to enter a raffle where first prize is becoming their campaign manager, but hey second prize is a free pizza. Surely all the good luck you’ve accumulated won’t all be used up to win first prize here. Welp. Universe, you really are playing an early April Fools prank on me huh. After meeting all the candidates running, and more specifically getting first impressions in for six specific ones, your name gets drawn as the first place prize winner. If I could give this to Thomas I would. Even though you’ll now be managing one of the lowest polling cat-nidates (hehe), it does at least pay well and Thomas is right about it being a great opportunity. The election may be in four days (wait, what?!?) for your state (phew) and your choices may be a unique and quirky bunch of cats, but maybe, just maybe, you’ll be able to make these third rate candidates into Presidential material! For my rankings, it’s a mix of what I thought of them as a character and what I thought about their route. And here it is: Nano > Pollytrix > Cardoon > Finkle > Zeus > Jelly Jam Overall, I ended up liking Cat President: 3rd-Rate Candidate more than I thought I would. I didn’t have much expectations other than the game being funny and it was that plus it was actually pretty good. I liked the writing style here, I liked the various cat puns and wordplay here, I liked how quick and snappy the routes were, the storylines the routes had were perfect for the short length (every route was about an hour and a half for me), and they were all different from one another. I ended up liking most of the routes and the direction they went in as well. Of course, I have my favorite routes and ones I didn’t like as much, but I’d say it’s still pretty good that I liked 5 out of 6 routes. As for the political parody aspect of Cat President: 3rd Rate Candidate, I’d say it was pretty well done here. It’s pointed just enough that you can tell what it’s parodying, while also having room so it could be joked about and be funny. And I do feel the aspects which each route was parodying was well chosen. While a route’s storyline only happens if you go down their route, there is some continuity. Like, the cats’ personalities are still the same so the actions they do in other routes are things you can see them doing once you learn about them more in their route. There is even some information that is canon, which was a bit of a surprise for me as I was full into the “each route are completely separated stories” mindset and some weird things that don’t get explained in other parts of the game do get explained in that cat’s route. Though, I do wonder how much the Dumpster Fire and Also Ran endings are canon. Like if the reveal of the conflict that is kept a mystery in the Success ending is true or if it’s mainly so the cat candidates are in the worst light. I don’t know, maybe I’m thinking a bit too much. I also liked the cats themselves, how different they were from one another, and the ways they approached their campaign. You can really tell why they were third rate candidates haha, but they all did also have qualities where you could realistically save their campaign. I liked the side characters here and the way they were used in the story both as a parody and their role in the route. My favorite side character will always be my bestie Thomas. And as for the protagonist, I liked and related to her quite a lot. Having the protagonist not being interested in politics, while also having a best friend that is a total politics nerd, was a great choice and it does funnily enough make you a third rate campaign manager as well. Also, gotta love how much the protagonist loves Christmas movies with a little genre twist to them. In terms of how the game is if this game is the first Cat President game you’re playing, I’d say this game does a great job in that regard. You don’t need to know anything about how it works in this game’s universe and I think it also helps that the protagonist doesn’t like politics. All you need to know going in is that pets can talk and cats can be politicians. The game does tell you other things as you go along, when it's relevant, and I wasn’t confused over anything. Not even during Cardoon’s route where I learned has references to what you learn in the second game. Though, I did not think they were serious with who President Nibbles’ previous Vice President was haha. So yeah, this game does a great job at being a good entry for players to start at while also having references from the previous two that still makes sense. After you get at least one ending in each of the routes, the Bonus section will unlock on the main menu. This basically gives you some insight on why certain decisions were made and even see some deleted scenes that didn’t make it into the game. As for negatives, the only thing I can think of is that the humor isn’t going to be for everyone. I personally liked the humor here, but I know it’s not going to be a hit for everyone. Though, I’d say if you thought the game’s trailer was funny, you’ll probably find the full game funny. In fact, the main reason why I decided to play this game was because I thought the trailer was funny. Other than that, I just found it weird that the Endings list will unlock all the endings after only getting one of them. This one isn’t a negative, as you can view the Also Ran endings easily, but just weird. Those going in mainly for romance may also be disappointed that it’s a bit of an afterthought. [h1]Verdict[/h1] All in all, I ended up liking Cat President: 3rd Rate Candidate more than I thought it would. I went in expecting this game to simply be funny and it turned out to be better than I thought. I had a fun time going through the various routes trying to get these cats on the road to becoming the next President and dealing with whatever their storyline threw at me. And having a little bit of romance sprinkled on top. Even if you’re someone that doesn’t like politics or didn’t play the previous two games in the series, Cat President: 3rd Rate Candidate is a short and fun visual novel that I would recommend. I playtested this! Very funny and you don't need to play 1 and 2 first to understand it

There are 6 new different kind of cats running for president and they need your help. The romance part is made in a cute innocent way, nothing gross in it. Mainly you just talk with these cats, make choices which lead you either to the good, neutral or bad ending. These Cat president games are so absurd and humorous! :D And unique! This 3rd one has been fun to read, too and there are all those cute cats to watch. Nano for president! <3

This has a short common route with vastly differently routes per cat. One is a musical. Another involves time loops. Just like real politics. The wacky premise is leaned into for all it's worth. There are 3 different endings per route based on whether you make good or bad decisions. It's fairly easy to know what the good decisions are. Although choosing the bad ones is still fun.
