Castlevania Advance Collection contains 4 games Dracula X is often compared as a demake of Rondo of Blood but is quite good. Nice music bosses platforming classic castlevania at it’s core not the best but not bad 7/10 (remember to have an axe for Dracula) Circle of the Moon is first metroidvania after SoTN and it’s great. Story exists, Map layout is nice secret rooms are somewhat hidden but there is one problem rooms are HUGE for no reason. Main mechanic in the game are DSS cards which you combine to have different effects and that is a brilliant system but they ♥♥♥♥♥♥ it up with one thing. Drop rates are abysmal less than 2% on average and they only drop from specific enemies. If that doesn’t bother you great. Music is fantastic for a GBA game also Nathan movement is really stiff. Bosses are nice and there is a bit of twist to Hugh (btw the game is considered non canon). 8/10 Harmony of Dissonance have a better story that is really interesting with a big twist. Different endings that change and voice acting. I don’t really know who thought that but it’s nice Juste and others have sometimes a voice line but in Japanese? Weird though Konami is from Japan so maybe that’s why but they have those voices in American version (Idk about EU and JP). Juste moves much better than Nathan but holy ♥♥♥♥ colors are so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bright. It was made cause of the backlash from CotM since GBA didn’t have light to lit up the screen and it was hard to see. It came at the cost that in the future on emulator or collection playing it is turning some people down cause of these colors. Another thing that made it worse since so much GBA power went to colors Juste have some blue lines that outline him and it’s ugly. Time to talk about elephant in the room music is just horrendous I genuinely can’t listen to this. Castle map is bad (in game map) room layout is better but still far from perfect and you will be exploring TWO castles that have almost THE SAME ROOM LAYOUT. It does have spell book system that is a downgrade from DSS but still works nice basically you pick up a bible for example and have different effects if you equipped book of ice fire etc. Good game 6/10 Aria of Sorrow is a game that is not overrated btw. One thing I do find that was somewhat bad is drop rates of some souls in game if you go for 100% other than that nothing else to say. Peak music combat characters bosses castle rooms exploration souls system merchant secrets weapons etc. 10/10 will play again. Unironically collection is worth full price just because Aria is so good. 9/10 collection. Try on sale if you don’t know if it will click with you.
Circle of the Moon is a very fun game that rewards exploration even in the lategame a la Super Metroid and unlike games like Symphony of the Night, which constantly dumps garbage into your inventory that you do not care about. This is a game that makes asks you to make use of what you get and by golly will you. Harmony of Dissonance asks the bold question: "What if we made an entry in a series known for great music where we purposely made every single track completely terrible?" It also asks, "What if we made an entry in a notoriously difficult series that is so pisseasy that at no point in its six hour runtime does it ever feel like it has justified being made?" This is a game where every tool you get exclusively opens one area that is in the location mathematically calculated to be as far away as possible from where you got the tool to maximize the amount of time that you waste on the game. Harmony of Dissonance makes you feel like you're playing a game that was designed specifically to stall you past the two-hour refund mark even though it was released 25 years ago. Aria of Sorrow walks back all the mistakes in Harmony of Dissonance and brings back that Symphony of the Night pick-up-a-bunch-of-worthless-garbage but also asks you to grind every single enemy in the game for six hours for completion. It is not as pisseasy as Harmony of Dissonance but there are harder bossfights in Lego games. Exploring does not feel like as much of a waste of time because there's barely any to do. Dracula X is the worst excuse for a video game I think I have ever played in my life, and I've played Monster Hunter: Wilds. Nothing about this game justifies its own existence. The final stage of Dracula X is a five minute stage that will take you on its own longer than you took to beat the entirety of Harmony of Dissonance and maybe Aria of Sorrow. It has was I think is legitimately the worst boss in any video game I have ever played. Dracula X is so bad that if it was removed from this collection, the collection could probably be sold for $25. TL;DR: Circle of the Moon is the only game in this collection that is better than the Zelda CDI games but it is so good that it on its own warrants a purchase maybe even off-sale. Harmony of Dissonance is bad. Aria of Sorrow is boring but it's kind of funny how hard you can ♥♥♥♥ on every single enemy in the game. Dracula X is so terrible that it makes the entire collection worse by being attached to it.
It's good, mostly for those who played the games back in the day. Aria af Sorrow is by far the best title in this set, but the others are a refreshing reminder of how games can get better over time and experience.
An excellent collection of old metroidvania castlevania games from the GBA era. All great games really. Aria is the goat tho. Would recommend. (Although you could always Emu)
Another great collection...minus Aria of Sorrows' absolute dog sh*t drop rate
