Castle Commander is an abandoned Early Access attempt at making a Unreal based mobile app-like tower/castle defense game. You have a castle and a nice tech tree and you can build archers and other upgrades to defend and strengthen your castle. Of course, you start with very little so you need to fall back on your ability to put your finger on your iPhone screen and fling the attackers around. Not gonna lie, this might work properly as a concept if it was implemented properly, and completed. Castle Commander was not implemented properly, and it was not completed. In fact this just exists on Steam as a scam, now. Let's go into why. The game was abandoned immediately at launch, it never recieved an update after launch day, so it hasn't been updated in about 4 years. It blew past the developers commitment to complete the game without any notification or admission of failure from the developer. The game will never be completed. However, because the developer is full of ethics and doing the right thing, they continue to try scam gamers into buying it... routinely discounting the game, and putting the game into game bundles, even though they have no intention of actually finishing the product. Abusing Steam Early Access, and scamming gamers by trying to mislead them into buying a broken, incomplete product. Ugh. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The game features lazy low-polygon "retro" assets, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the 1990s. It's unclear why the developers weren't able to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets for the game, and also irrelevant... what matters is that this looks bad as a result of their decisions, a compromise PC gamers shouldn't have to put up with. The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just iPhone screen tapping stuff. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here. This looks and feels like a mobile app, but it doesn't seem to have made it to the app stores. It's unclear why this was put on Steam instead of the app stores it seems to have been designed for. Maybe it was removed, maybe it was rejected by Apple and Google (they do have more rigorous quality standards than Valve does for Steam, after all). Regardless, for all intents and purposes Castle Commander might as well be a mobile app, it has the same limitations and dumbed down qualities. It's impossible to recommend such a game to PC gamers. We don't spend all this money building gaming rigs so we can pretend they're iPhones and play games that might as well be mobile apps. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 2 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Unethically, the developer sold keys to this abandoned Early Access game into cheap, nasty game bundles, where they knew it would be advertised and sold as a complete PC game. This seems to have been done in an attempt to mislead gamers into buying a knowingly faulty, defective and incomplete product. When a developer does this for a game they have zero practical intention of completing, this is essentially a scam, an intention to get paid for a broken/unfinished product. Often this is done as an exit strategy, as the developer takes the money and runs. No refunds have been given, the developer kept all the money they took from gamers. Castle Commander has the scam-like price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the unethical nature of the developer. Remember that if you buy a game from an unethical developer, you're putting your money at risk.
Profile Features Limited!
Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
the collision hit box to grab is way too small. it takes way to long to build anything up. needs a lot of tweaks until i can call it entertaining rather that frustrating

Pretty good start. Would be cool if there was an upgrade to get more money per kill. Also, the only bug is that your upgrades reset when you quit the game and continue later. I really love the idea of bringing a classic game like Defend Your Castle back and upgrading it.
