Once again, we got a new case to investigate. This time, as the title suggests, it is an internal affair. Two officers were killed, and you have to interview their spouses and close friends, compare the evidence, and call out those who lie. I found this case written pretty well and thoroughly enjoyed it. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3730189919 The gameplay is limited: you have documents to read, voice messages to listen to, and interview videos to reply to; concentrate on those answers. However, with this limitation, the game is still very enjoyable. You'll find yourself suspecting everyone of them until you find the real culprit. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3730189837 After each interview, you'll be presented with a major question, and you have to answer it correctly for the investigation to go right and to earn the achievement, which is based on your answers and whether you get them all right. The section where you spot the contradiction was a little bit difficult, and I had to guess a couple of times. You have to keep rewinding the previous videos and read the documents carefully. The acting is much better than in the last two games. I even asked all the characters to see how they would react, and they delivered. I felt bad for a couple of them. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3730189794 Pros: +Well-written story. +Great acting. +Murder mystery. +Intersting characters +Detective style of reading notes and spot the contradictions. +Multiple endings. (Only one right ending) +Steam achievements. Cons: -You are only in one room doing everything from there. It took me almost 7 hours to finish the game, a good length for this mystery, but I never felt it that long. I enjoyed it so much and couldn't turn it off or switch to another game. Recommended to people who enjoy detective games and Visual novels. Having completed the previous two games in this series, I personally feel this is the best one so far. I often find video game mysteries rather predictable or too superficial, but that was not the case here. Even when I formed a theory about the killer, the plot development kept making me skeptical of my own theories. One bit that may be annoying for some is that they added a little riddle this time. I am not going to spoil any of it, but for a while I feared that it might block me from advancing the story. A good night's sleep gave me the solution, though. ;) So, it may be a non-issue for the majority of players (and I assume there will be guides helping those who, like me in the beginning, can't figure it). It took me about 7 hours to play through which is a good length for my attention span. The acting is overall really good, and the lead detective delivers another consistent, strong performance. I really like him! Note: I received a free copy of this game for playtesting purposes.
This is the third game in the case files series and I believe it to be the best so far. Don’t expect a huge production for this game. It takes place in one room, literally. It’s story driven with very little interaction. There is some “detective” work in the contradiction portion of the game, but that is minor. It’s half a dozen or so choices, that’s it. https://youtu.be/jTHLjOkHf-4 All this sounds like a boring game, but the story was well written this time around and significantly better acting in this one than previous installments. If you’re more into story fmv gaming, you should enjoy it. If you like puzzles, hunting for clues, and branching stories, you may not enjoy it.
How good are you at identifying lies? Your goal is to find lies and mistruths within video interviews. Ultimately, your task is to find who murdered two cops. Evidence is provided for the murders and player needs to review the interviews to make a deduction. There are call logs, psych evaluation, and other documents. After watching the recorded interview, you are asked a question or to find evidence that contradicts what the participant claimed.
Pros:
- No filler scenes and each interview takes a deeper look into the mindset of each participant and possible motives for murdering the cop. - Contradiction part was a good way to test player's ability to find holes in the interviewer's testimony. - Your decisions affect the outcome of the case. You do not need to be perfect to build a case against the murderer.
Cons:
- The random storage room where you watch the footage makes the game feel less realistic and immersive. - Actor portrayals feel like they were scripted interviews. When it comes to topics of murder and accusations, I expected more emotion since their reactions were wooden and the spouses were too calm.
Suggestions:
- Add 1.25 speed option for the interviews. - The steam page is somewhat misleading since there really were only 5 suspects and 1 person was not considered an actual suspect. I would update it to reflect that fact. - New documents appear on the desk, but there is no indication of new information/evidence unless player checks first. - Some of the questions come down to making a hunch rather than good detective skills. I prefer that they provide a 3-5 bullet point summary so player can make the most informed decision. - Add a lie detector portion or questioning with lawyer present to give the player more information before deciding who is the murderer. The main issue with the sequence of events is that no legal counsel is present which makes the assumption that suspects are foolish enough to talk with a cop without a lawyer present. Conclusion: Game feels realistic, but many questions felt like they were 50/50 coin flips based on how you analyzed or interpreted the interviews. I prefer 1.25 speed since you can view the video if you want to revisit interview. Overall, a good detective game with several possible suspects and interesting ways to analyze evidence, but the procedures could be changed to more closely resemble a murder investigation. Like the other Case Files game I played (Behind Closed Doors) the story is surprisingly strong. It's complex enough to sustain its mystery, and the acting is good enough to carry it - especially for such an obviously low-budget game. It is, however, quite short, quite linear, and there are only a few parts where you need to go through call records and profiles to find contradictions. Still, I'm happy to support the dev because all the ingredients of a genuinely great fmv game are there. If they ever decide to do something bigger, more interviews, more branching paths, more files to dig through, and the same quality of acting and writing, then I'll be the first to buy it.
Another solid entry to the Case Files series. Perhaps even the best out of all of them. The mystery is larger in magnitude than in the previous entries, without spoiling too much. You will be distracted and surprised many times throughout the investigation. I would recommend this to everyone who enjoys solving an interactive mystery. The acting is solid from everyone, and there is no filler in this story. Just remember that your choices matter, so be very thorough with your investigation. Until next time, Detective Ruiz.
More of the same, which is good. I've completed all 3 games and I'll play the next one once/if they release it. Just a couple recommendations in case they're reading this review. The notebook should have more pages, one page is not enough for taking notes and after beating the game, a chapter selection would be great to be able to see all the videos without having to replay the whole game, even with the option to skip media, if I want to see what would have happened if I'd chosen another option on the later videos, it takes a while to get there. Just some minor complaints. The games are great, keep up the good work and I hope you release more games!
This is the longest and most complex game in the Case Files series so far, and introduces a few new mechanics: some additional events occur over time, adding new evidence for you to review, and at one point you have to find the password to an encrypted file in order to progress. (To anyone worried about this: don't worry, the solution is pretty simple and obvious.) But the bulk of the game still consists of watching and reviewing interviews with suspects and witnesses. 'Internal Affairs' has similar strengths and weaknesses to the previous two games. The acting is fantastic, probably the best in the series so far, and the 'spot the contradiction' mechanic feels very satisfying when you get it right. But the 'truth and lies' portion of the interviews can be highly frustrating: each suspect has a 'tell' that indicates when they're lying, and while it is possible to spot these from watching their interviews very closely, it can be extraordinarily difficult. It can also be hard to judge which pieces of evidence to use in the 'contradiction' sections, even if you know exactly what the suspect is lying about - luckily the game allows unlimited tries for this. Like in 'Behind Closed Doors', I guessed the real culprit almost the moment they appeared on screen, and that did make the remaining interviews feel like a bit of a waste of time. They were really the only plausible suspect, and therefore the final choice (where you have to try and force them into a confession) fell very flat for me. There was zero evidence that either of the proposed approaches would work, and I'd have preferred to just use all the evidence gathered so far to set out a case against them. You can however replay this choice and also view the endings for the other suspects. For fans of detective games, the 'Case Files' series is a unique and realistic take on the genre. If you enjoyed the other two games, you'll probably like this one as well. If you're new to the series, I'd recommend starting with 'Behind Closed Doors' first as it's shorter and simpler, but this one is well worth a playthrough.
正解がよくわからない、あてずっぽうでは。ちゃんとした破綻点についての答え合わせもない、全部刑事の勘みたいな処理をされる最後までやる気にもならない。
Totally engrossing!
