Reviews
A very short visual novel that should probably be played by visual novel lovers. One playthrough to get all achievements.

It is subtle but impressive how the game (the novel itself) conveys an important message, which alludes to a serious current problem in the world of romantic relationships regarding solitude, oneself and expectations: always looking for that perfect match, free from conflicts, rejections and human imperfections. In the search for the latter, a very important question arises: Do we love a real person or do we love the idea we have of her? It is crucial to stop and ask this question to know if we are personally living a fantasy or reality, if we are preferring in a comfortable self-imposed utopia rather than facing that loneliness, discomfort, rejection and the difficulties that a real relationship entails. The game juxtaposes a double meaning with "Carpe Diem". Jung knows deep down that the situation with Ai can’t last forever but still, he decides to enjoy that day with her (live in the moment, this moment is precious precisely because it’s temporary). I want to leave the reader with one last question: if you could choose between a perfect but artificial relationship and an imperfect but real one, what would you choose? I hope that this message can reach more people and that it will be of help to those who feel in a similar situation with love, solitude and life. Remember that everything comes, eventually it will come.
Carpe Diem is a short visual novel developed and published by Moonlit Works that proves a meaningful story does not need dozens of hours to leave an impression. Built around a simple premise and a small cast of characters, the game focuses on a single day in the life of Jung and his companion Ai. What initially appears to be a lighthearted romantic experience gradually reveals a more emotional and reflective narrative, encouraging players to appreciate the present rather than dwell on what cannot be changed. The game's storytelling is its strongest feature. Instead of relying on dramatic twists or complicated plot structures, it creates emotional weight through ordinary conversations and shared moments. Jung and Ai spend much of the story engaging in everyday activities, but beneath the cheerful interactions lies a deeper message about love, loss, and acceptance. The writing succeeds because it allows players to become attached to the characters before revealing the true significance of their relationship. As the narrative unfolds, seemingly simple scenes gain additional meaning, making the final moments considerably more impactful than the modest scope of the game might suggest. Although Carpe Diem presents players with occasional dialogue choices, it is essentially a linear experience. The decisions mostly influence minor conversations rather than the overall outcome of the story. Some players may view this as a limitation, especially those who prefer visual novels with multiple endings and branching routes. However, the linear design helps maintain the focus of the narrative and ensures that the emotional message reaches every player in the intended way. The game feels less like an interactive adventure and more like a carefully crafted short story. Visually, the presentation is attractive and effective. The anime-inspired character artwork is expressive, and Ai's design in particular helps establish the warm and inviting atmosphere that defines much of the experience. The backgrounds are straightforward but fit the tone of the story well, creating a comfortable setting for the interactions between the characters. While the visual assets are not especially elaborate, they serve the narrative effectively and contribute to the game's emotional appeal. The soundtrack complements the story nicely with gentle and emotional musical pieces that reinforce both the happier and more melancholic moments. The music never overwhelms the scenes, instead acting as a subtle enhancement to the mood. Combined with the game's calm pacing, the audio helps create an intimate atmosphere that encourages players to focus on the characters and their evolving relationship. One aspect that will divide players is the game's extremely short length. Most people can complete Carpe Diem in less than an hour, and there is limited replay value once the story has been experienced. Players looking for extensive content or deep gameplay systems may find the experience too brief. Nevertheless, the game understands its purpose and avoids unnecessary filler. Every scene contributes to the central message, resulting in a concise narrative that respects the player's time. What ultimately makes Carpe Diem memorable is its sincerity. The story does not attempt to be overly complex or revolutionary. Instead, it delivers a heartfelt message about cherishing meaningful moments and valuing the people who matter most. The emotional themes resonate because they are presented through relatable characters and believable interactions. Even after the credits roll, the game's core message remains easy to reflect upon. For a free visual novel, Carpe Diem offers impressive quality and emotional depth. Its combination of charming presentation, focused storytelling, and touching themes makes it an easy recommendation for fans of narrative-driven experiences. While its short runtime and linear structure may not satisfy everyone, those willing to invest a small amount of time will find a surprisingly moving story that leaves a lasting impression.
