Slightly recommended if you're looking for something that's a little janky but can be played with friends. I'm sure this would be better with friends who can guard and cook but maybe too easy to start. The idea is solid and reminds me of overcooked but with enemies. You're trying to handle kitchen duties while enemies burst in and attack them. They're pretty quick and once the enemy latches on it's pretty much over. The powers (attacks) feel very weak and it's incredibly difficult to aim. If I was going to suggest improvements it would be: 1. Leave a longer trail on the fireball/lightening so I can see where it goes if I miss and I can aim better next time 2. Allow me to shoot through customers 3. Punish the player for making food and having it sit out (let it rot)

Cantrip Cafe is a quirky cooperative action-cooking game created by Jaden Davis and Eva Wierzbicki and published by Chubby Puppy Games. The game combines elements of time-management cooking simulators with light combat mechanics, producing an experience that feels both chaotic and humorous. Set inside a magical cafe run by witches, the game challenges players to keep hungry customers satisfied while simultaneously defending the establishment from invading monsters. This unusual mixture of restaurant management and magical combat immediately sets the tone for a playful and unconventional multiplayer experience. The core premise revolves around operating a small but lively cafe in a fantasy setting where magic and cooking coexist. Players take on the role of witches responsible for preparing food, serving customers, and maintaining the cafe’s operations. However, unlike traditional cooking games where the focus remains solely on preparing dishes efficiently, Cantrip Cafe introduces a second layer of pressure in the form of hostile creatures that periodically attack the restaurant. When monsters appear, players must temporarily shift their attention from cooking duties to combat, casting spells and using abilities to defend both the cafe and its guests. Gameplay revolves around managing several tasks at once within a compact kitchen environment. Players move around the cafe preparing ingredients, cooking meals, and delivering orders to waiting customers. At the same time, they must remain alert for incoming monster waves that threaten to disrupt the restaurant. The constant juggling between preparing food and defending the cafe creates a fast-paced gameplay loop where quick decisions and teamwork become essential. If players spend too much time fighting enemies, customers may grow impatient; if they focus entirely on cooking, the monsters may overrun the cafe. The cooperative multiplayer mode is the heart of the experience. Up to four players can join together locally, turning the cafe into a bustling and sometimes chaotic workplace. Each player typically gravitates toward a different role during gameplay. One person might focus on cooking dishes, another might handle serving customers, while others defend the cafe from monster attacks. When the team coordinates effectively, the cafe operates smoothly despite the constant interruptions. However, when communication breaks down, the kitchen can quickly descend into hilarious disorder as food burns, monsters roam freely, and customers become increasingly impatient. In addition to the cooperative mode, the game also includes a competitive mode that introduces a different style of play. In this mode, players compete against one another instead of cooperating, using spells and abilities to disrupt their opponents while still attempting to manage the cafe environment. This variation provides an additional layer of entertainment, especially for groups looking to add a competitive twist to the experience after spending time in cooperative sessions. Magic plays a central role in both combat and gameplay strategy. Each witch character has access to spells that can be used to attack monsters, control the battlefield, or assist teammates during hectic moments. Some spells focus on direct damage against enemies, while others provide support effects that help manage the chaos inside the cafe. Players can also unlock stronger abilities over time, giving them access to powerful attacks capable of clearing large groups of enemies in dramatic bursts of magical energy. Progression within the game allows players to improve both their magical abilities and the cafe itself. As players continue playing, they gain opportunities to upgrade spells and unlock new abilities that enhance their defensive capabilities. Meanwhile, improvements to the cafe’s kitchen equipment can make cooking tasks more efficient, allowing teams to prepare food faster and handle larger numbers of customers. These upgrades gradually increase the team’s effectiveness while introducing more demanding challenges. The visual presentation embraces a colorful cartoon aesthetic that reinforces the game’s playful tone. Characters are drawn in an exaggerated and expressive style, making it easy to distinguish each witch during cooperative gameplay. The cafe environment is filled with bright colors and animated details that bring the magical restaurant to life. Even when monsters invade the cafe, the overall presentation remains lighthearted and comedic rather than threatening. Sound design contributes to the lively atmosphere with energetic effects accompanying both cooking and spell casting. The sounds of sizzling food, magical blasts, and monster attacks combine to create a busy audio environment that reflects the frantic pace of gameplay. Background music maintains a cheerful tone that helps keep the experience feeling fun even when the kitchen becomes overwhelmed with tasks. The game’s pacing is well suited for short play sessions. Individual rounds typically progress quickly, making it easy for players to jump into the action without needing a large time commitment. This accessibility makes the game ideal for casual multiplayer sessions, where players can quickly learn the mechanics and begin cooperating without needing extensive tutorials or preparation. Despite its charm, the game’s relatively small scope is noticeable over longer periods of play. The number of environments, enemies, and gameplay variations is somewhat limited, which can cause the experience to feel repetitive after many sessions. Additionally, while the game technically supports solo play, the mechanics are clearly designed around cooperative interaction. Playing alone removes much of the chaotic teamwork that makes the game entertaining. Even with these limitations, Cantrip Cafe succeeds as a creative and enjoyable multiplayer experience. The combination of cooking simulation and magical combat produces a unique gameplay loop that feels both frantic and humorous. The cooperative nature of the game encourages communication and teamwork, often resulting in memorable moments as players scramble to keep the cafe functioning while monsters attack from every direction. Ultimately, Cantrip Cafe stands out as a charming indie experiment that blends two unlikely genres into a cohesive and entertaining experience. Its whimsical premise, colorful presentation, and cooperative gameplay make it an appealing choice for groups of friends looking for a casual and chaotic multiplayer game. While it may not offer extensive long-term content, the game excels at providing short bursts of energetic fun inside one of the most unusual cafes in gaming. Rating: 7/10
