About
Cairn’s realistic simulation allows intuitive climbing: find the best holds and place your hands and feet seamlessly with simple controls. Adapt your posture, effort and balance —if you're not careful, you will fall!
As pro climber Aava, you embark on the ascent of Mount Kami, a summit that has never been reached. Along the journey, meet unexpected companions and hear from those left on the ground. Discover the mountain's history and decide what Aava is willing to sacrifice to achieve her dream.
You are free to climb anywhere. Explore the mountain, read the rock face from the ground and plan your route carefully to reach the top. Solve problems while on the wall to navigate difficult sections. You can climb on anything, so choose your path wisely!
Climbing is challenging: each wall feels like a boss fight. A thrilling challenge for those eager to test themselves, but you can also adjust the difficulty to customise your experience.
Manage your resources to survive during the long ascent: pitons, chalk, finger tape... but also food, water and medicine. Set up bivouacs and explore the mountain to find resources to reach the summit.
An unforgettable experience from the makers of Furi and Haven, with music and sound design by the team behind Limbo, Inside, Control and Cocoon, and art and story by renowned comic-book artist Mathieu Bablet.

I wanted to like this game so bad. All my friends told me I'd love this game, because I climb irl. Unfortunately, it just didn't work for me. The climbing mechanic, the bread and butter of the game, was just so, so frustrating. I felt like I was fighting the game itself, not the mountain. The automatic limb selection was the bane of my existence, I felt like it so often didn't select the limb I intuitively wanted to move next -- and I climb for real, so I feel like my intuition should be decent. Sure, there's a manual limb selection, but then the game doesn't put the auto-selected limb back where it was, it just puts it kinda wherever, often not on the good hold I'd selected for it. So manual limb selection gets you a lot of extra lost stamina. There were also times when Aava was panting a lot, as if she was in a precarious position, and it looked really stable to me. There were the times when big features on the wall that should've been jugs, like sculpted indents and window entrances, didn't count as holds at all. There were the times when I was on a ledge where she could have just stood up with no hands and rested, but she was holding on for dear life, and I couldn't manually get out of climbing mode because that would make her jump backwards from the wall. And of course, just all the times when I tried to set a hand on a hold, only for her to set it *next* to the hold, on nothing but bare wall. The other thing I struggled with was pitons. I'll admit I don't trad climb at all (I only boulder and sport climb), so maybe this one's on me. But since there was no mechanic around piton *placement*, you can just plant one wherever without having to find a crack or hole, I didn't really think about trad climbers who love sketchy runouts. I just assumed I should place them for safety, roughly like bolts on a sport climbing route, roughly the way I'd want them if I was climbing to not hurt myself if I fell. Turns out, that's not really the case. The pitons break, a lot. They break more if you place them crooked or if you fall on them (so are you not supposed to use them for preventing a fall?), but sometimes they just break anyway. I had one break just from rappelling on it. Of course you don't fall when they break, it's just that you get scraps back when the robot cleans the route, but then you have fewer pitons to use. At one point I was down to 2 pitons. So I started using them very sparingly, only when I really needed to recharge my stamina because Aava was panting so hard, and that seemed to go better. Overall, the aesthetic of the game is really pretty, and the story was interesting. In addition to the narrative around Aava herself, the environmental storytelling with stuff left by other climbers and mountain dwellers was neat. Choosing a line up a cliff side was cool. Exploring the mountain was inviting. Ultimately, it was just way more frustrating than fun for me. And unfortunately, not frustrating in the way where I feel proud and accomplished after finally sending a hard climb... just frustrating.
Fun gameplay, touching story and and makes me wish for more.
This game is somehow a relaxing and introspective game while also being jank self inflicted torutre simulator. At times this game made me want to punch my screen, and other times it made me want to turn it off and think about life. The story also has its ups and downs, what would drive a person to such lengths to climb a mountain? The ending was amazing, probably one of the best game endings out there, only made more sweet by the hellish difficulty of getting to it, as of writting only about 1/4 of people actually finished the game. (That's less than most souls games)
Phenomenal. I'm going to be honest, I discovered this game because Spotify recommended its soundtrack. I liked the music so much that I decided to check out the game itself. At first, I didn't expect much. A climbing game with mechanics that take some getting used to? But once you get the hang of it, you're rewarded with beautiful scenery, climbing where every meter gained feels earned, and challenges that make reaching the next ledge incredibly satisfying. All of this unfolds alongside a touching story. Not just about Aava, but also about the mountain, Kami, that you're climbing. For me, the real experience was the feeling of simply keeping going. The peace, the loneliness of the landscape, and the unique energy of the mountain reminded me of the times I've hiked high into the mountains myself. And of course, there's the music. As I mentioned before, it's beautiful and fits the game perfectly. I ended up listening to the entire soundtrack after finishing the game. €30 might be a little steep, but it's absolutely worth the experience, especially if you can grab it on sale. Give it a try.
An impeccable game that sticks out beyond anything you'd expect. This could've just been a climbing game, but it's so much more. If you're even slightly curious about playing Cairn and you see this review - it's worth it.
