The core gameplay is alright, although the general scale and speed makes precision aiming challenging. Obviously the strength of the game is its absurd passives system, which gives excellent replayability. Making a winning build took a little trial and error but was very possible without using a guide or any build advice. Very strong visual style that can border on overwhelming (which I think no one expects from an Asteroids-style game). Definitely good value for the price and clear care put into the design. Feels like an indie hit from a decade ago in all the best ways.

A kind of game I wish there was a lot more of: focused on build creation, but not long and grindy, and not permadeath so you get to incrementally improve and experiment without being beholden to RNG like so many roguelikes. The game itself is far from a perfect realization though. Graphics are of course very bare bones, and I'd say the game at the heart of it(slightly fancier Asteroids) is as well. I'd prefer something more there on both counts, though I can definitely respect the minimalism.

It's fun for a while, but quickly devolves into autoplaying chaos. It's basically impossible to figure out what the most basic things do: I've somehow pieced together overpowered builds that got to 1M points without me touching the controls, but I still don't know what the "ammo" meter means, why it instantly replenishes once it's depleted, why it sometimes empties in a couple seconds and sometimes doesn't seem to empty at all even when spraying around hundreds of bullets...
This game honestly looks really cool, and the style of it is great. But I am really just frustrated with the how the menu is designed, it is very unique in the sense that it is in the form of a concole command. But by golly is it hard to navigate it. Also, I am not certain yet, but I don't see an option to control the ship with a mouse, I might be blind, since the option was available on another game this developer made, SNKRX. And even whe nI turn distortions, glitching, and sound to 0, the music and static is still there after launching the game. I really want to give this game a fair judgment before I reviewed it, but my initial playthrough was just a pain. The distortions, the glitching, and effects are just too much for me.
Like Asteroids with Path of Exile's skill tree. Bytepath is not a huge game, but it still provides a ton of depth and a lot of fun mechanical tinkering, with individual playthroughs being short enough to make it fun to constantly try new builds.
Don't expect a path of exile replacement, but at 72% off, this is a pretty insane value for roguelite fans
released 2018 sure, why not. 10/10 fun retro astroids rougelite? i liked it
