Butterflies is a video game about inline skating and graffiti. Apparently some people did that before, but they don't seem like they'll be doing it anymore.

Super convoluted to buy the game - if you get it on Steam, the base game just includes Episode 3 and following a June 2023 update from the developer, it is "the preferred way to experience" the game, as they think Episode 1 and 2 aren't up to standard. You can get Episode 1 + 2 as DLCs for 8 bucks combined and I really recommend everyone to start with the first episode as it's the only one with a tutorial and like eases you in narratively wise. (and like both are better than Episode 3) I'll sum up my thoughts briefly of every episode: Episode 1: A crude, bashful, scaffolding interpretation of Jet Set Radio, fueled by the ambitions and jank of a student project (positive!). Plopping you in a Tony Hawk Undeground-esque map with little quests spotted throughout makes it very open-ended and gratifying to jump, grind and skate through! I am sick of constantly hearing zapping sounds and the hooligans just saying "RUDIE" "GET BACK HERE YOU LITTLE" non stop - doesn't help that the volume slider just modulates the music and now the SFX :(. 3/5 Episode 2: Almost identical in every facet with Episode 1, yet it feels alot more solidified, refined and less Student-project-y, Probably had the most fun with this episode: The addition of new characters were very derivative, but the mission design was lovely and engaging! It still has exactly all the same issues as before, but I guess I have grown accustomed to it. 3/5 Episode 3: Wow... what tha hell happened here? It's like they took in all the feedback and tried to fix them in the worse way possible! Let's talk about the good things: The visuals have seen a significant "upgrade" - stronger contrasting shadows and better texture work makes it all pop better on the screen - just wished they put more love into the characters, as their outline shader is seemingly eating them alive. They have minimized the appearance of/improved the enemies and turrets and just made them a lot less annoying and grating which I am all for it. Aside from that, they really butchered the game in every conceivable way. Heavily altered the movement in a way that feels sluggish and incompatible with the god awful level design of either open empty rooms or hyper-cluttered hallways. Never has it felt more painful to build up momentum and move - in a game that is specifically about that!! One common criticism I had with the first two episodes was with the "opinionated movement system" - you can only point to a general direction and the game decides when you can grind or wallrun. For the most part it worked fine, but executing specific combo missions were either pretty annoying or grating to do. Their solution? GET RID OF ALL THE COOL QUESTS AND JUST HAVE 90% OF THEM BE "TAG 6 WALLS". Oh yeah whoops, forgot to mention, there is a tag mechanic which is a pisspoor rhythm segment that brings the momentum-based gameplay to a halting stop. Yep, that's what they focused on in this episode, just that. Felt myself get physically ill after doing 5 of em in a row. That is not how to go about fixing the issue! The game seemed to be obsessed of highlighting just every bad aspect of itself - the broken halfpipe mechanic where it feels like you are stuck in halfpipe-prison? Yeah there is a quest just for that! The optional tagging minigame? Yeah it's mandatory. And speaking of mandatory - In the past episodes as long as you rakee in enuff points throughout, you could unlock the final mission and finish the game. Not only is every mission now mandatory to do, but the finale mission is a timed "get to the hardest area with the worse character" mission that, upon restarting it, breaks! So i cannot finish the game now. If that's the entry the developers are confident and proud of instead of it's rather gruff, but passionate first two entries, then they can't seem to see the wood for the trees of what they want the game to be. I REALLY didn't want to be so rough and negative about this passion game (especially since it already has a mixed rating here), but I cannot recommend the game now after seeing what direction they are taking the game with after Episode 3.

I really wanted to enjoy this, and I'll be keeping my eye on any future instalments, but there are just too many problems to really have fun here. The movement system has the right idea but just isnt polished enough to be relied upon to actually grab the wall or ledge you want, and sometimes inexplicably either killed all my momentum or suddenly sent me back the way i came when grinding, and the maps only exacerbate this issue. Episode 3's map was a big improvement over the other 2, but all maps seem to have the same core issues, namely that most parts of them are either way too cluttered for the movement system to handle, or way too empty and basically just a canyon with walls and rails to grind along the way. The lack of any scoring system outside of missions is a bit of a bummer too, so combined with the lack of options for creative lines in the map design, there isnt really much incentive to learn or improve at the movement system. Which is a shame. With more polish, it would be a good movement system, and a better map could enable that movement system to be used much more creatively. If this were an Early Access game I might keep it to see where it goes, but with the way the game is being sold it makes more sense to just refund, since any improvements and new maps will be sold as a new episode, not added as a patch. On the subject of how the game is being sold, the store page is confusing as hell so I'll explain: Each DLC is actually a separate game. Each episode contains 1 map. I couldn't tell if there were differences in control between 1 and 2, but episode 3 seems to have some minor improvements in the movement. So in other words, buying any or all episodes is not buying into any future improvements or content, it seems that each new batch of content in the series will be sold separately. I'm not complaining about this, just warning anyone interested in the series that I think really the smart thing to do is wait and hope for a future episode that fixes some of the issues, because buying what is available now isnt going to get you access to any improvements that might be made.
A modern Jet Set Radio. Very cool stuff. I appreciated the cultural and gender diversity in the cast (trans rights!) and how that was part of their stories in some cases. Also, very fun to play with large areas to explore, and I liked clearing out all the missions and tag spots. I hope to see more episodes to come!

Note: Every episode is about 2h long even though episode 3 is much more pricey, I'll review each of them separately since they're basically different games. Episode 1: This feels more like a beta than a game, its very hard to know what is or isn't something you can grind, the controls feel pretty decent though the camera is a little low making it hard to see in front of your characters which makes some precise jumps difficult to predict. This game has 3 characters, the first one is "balanced" but id argue its the worst one, one is a bit faster which is good for races and the 3rd one has better air letting her jump higher for extended distances, she also makes every challenge piss easy. The game has cops too, they kinda just cling on you like in the original JSR, but you can't really fight them, there are cameras that make very opaque circles that kinda blind you and shoot you, there are also no rivals you can race or fight. The game does feature a small boss at the end that you can defeat in 5 seconds. Visually the game looks a bit ugly, but its somewhat charming in a similar way as Psychonauts 1. The animations though are really janky and unappealing to me. The music is also just using as many samples that Hideki Naganuma has used before to a point where its mostly just distracting. Overall Episode 1 is about a 6/10 Episode 2: This one improves on the first game while keeping most of the gameplay the same with a few tweaks. The city is slightly bigger and has way better level design with less confusion over what you can or cannot grind. The camera's red circles aren't as opaque as before and are placed in areas where they can actually mess with the player. If you're still using the op girl from the first game this time she can build unreal amount of speed by chaining air combos which might've been in the first game, but I didn't learn how to do them until episode 2. The game does feature 2 new characters though with stats that are kinda useless? The game also has events against npcs now which are pretty fun and add more variety than just "Get all the pink checkpoints". The music is mostly the same deal as the first game except they also sampled memes now. Overall Episode 2 is about a 6.7/10 Episode 3: The first thing you'll notice is that thing game has a different cell shading artstyle. It was incredibly jarring at first, but I got used to it fairly quickly, I think the shadows are just a little too dark for my taste. The city was much more interesting level design wise again, but it also had more pedestrians that had about exactly 2 lines of dialogue, some areas seemed a bit unoptimised though because I could notice some slight frame drops even though I'm running on a 3060ti and an i7. Yet this game looks worse than a dreamcast game that released when I was 1 year old. The momentum also seemed quite nerfed, air combos don't build much speed and now running is faster, but much more boring, speaking of boring, most of the objectives in episode 3 are just "Spray 6 graffiti on this wall". I didn't talk about spraying before because it was mostly optional, but its quite slow, you have no incentive to make the full versions of any of them and its kinda boring as an objective since they aren't a strategic objective like in JSR, but they're also not a fun platforming challenge that gives you quick dopamine like in JSRF. There's also the infamous 13 platform challenge from Future for some reason, it just feels like the developers don't have any original ideas. The soundtrack is also very much copied from Future, though instead of just spamming as many Naganuma samples they just remade "Rock it on" and "Concept of love" except instead of saying "Understand" the song says "We be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥"??????????| Oh yeah there's 2 new characters, there's Red shirt Shaggy and a trans girl, I didn't use them. Overall this is the most polished episode, but the most boring one as well, its a 6.4/10
very cool game, but i need Chinese, not Chinese play very difficult
Absolutely try this game if you're a fan of a certain *other* game! I went in with little expectation, but this game overall as a 3 chapter package is a great successor to JSR. I wouldn't say it's better, but I've thoroughly enjoyed it in the same way i did JSR especially after so long without a new installment. Don't discard this game due to the small scale of the first chapter and give the full package a chance!
I want to say right off the bat that I love this game and always will, I first bought all 3 chapters on itch and don't regret buying them again. I do recommend this game but, I do want to say a lot of things before I do. Butterflies is not perfect, and that's fine, not every inde game made by a solo dev or a small team needs to be perfect and win 13 GOTY awards. But Im wrighting all this because Butterflies has a lot of small flaws. The cameras jank, the maps are both real good but kind of confusing, it has a few glitches, it can be hard to control sometimes, its weird to even buy the game, and a lot more small things that come up when you play it for yourself. But despite the plentyfull snags and hicups, the highs of this game way out do the lows. The speed and flow of most of its challanges are great, the music rocks, the world is fun and full of life. Im glad to stick with it now just as much as i did 3 or so years ago. You will have problems, Is what Im trying to stay, but if you stick with it, I think this game is an incredible time and a great love letter to JSR.
The game is really fun. *To start, it is worth mentioning that I bought all 3 episodes and played all 3 in order, which is probably the intended way to do it. y'know, story and what not. game was definitely worth the $23 at full price for all 3 for me. The controls and movement definitely take some getting used to, and the tutorial level as well as the map layout of Episode 1 aren't the most conducive for letting the player stretch their legs at first, but Episode 1 was still a fun experience (yes, I've bought and played thru all 3). The game has A LOT of classic Jet Set Radio (and JSR Future) DNA in it's core, just executed differently, like you can wall ride on ANY surface it's kinda wild. However, Episodes 2 and 3 definitely pick up the slack with better designed worlds, missions, some music related collectibles, and some more involved story beats (shout-out to episode 2 for having an absolute BANGER track for the final mission). Speaking of, all 3 episodes have a unique selection of songs, and all of them are honestly great, just sucks that you can't really find the music online anywhere outside of episode 1 on youtube. plus if there is a song you don't personally vibe with, you can just press the select button to switch songs (the music in game is on a permanent shuffle mode, so it'll skip to another random song). Story is kinda light, even in the later episodes - you don't even get an idea of what kind of world your in or why you're going around spraying graffiti until episode 2 for crying out loud. That being said, what's there is fun and enjoyable, i just wish there was more. Gameplay is tricky to tackle. The movement definitely took some getting used to, but once I got to understanding the controls and gameplay quirks, that's when REALLY I started having fun. Every unlockable character (and there are 2 in each episode) has some wildly different stats, so you can get some insane speed and air time with the right character. Graffiti and tagging is.... kinda like a rhythm game?? I'm not exactly sure how to describe it, you spray according to the lines that come up by holding down RT, and the line prompt almost always lines up with the beat of the current song (just gonna assume that's the case, and in that case, i think it's pretty neat). I haven't really tested the local multiplayer outside of one instance with some friends. Even on a Steam Deck outputting to a massive TV the game ran 4 players really well, I think the FPS is capped to 30 for that but it's still impressive honestly, and something I personally appreciate having these days. Graphics are pretty cool. Not much to say here, really. Characters look cool, the game itself looks like an old PS2 game, it looks like a game I could've played growing up. I really dig it. Overall,I like this one. I enjoyed the game enough to 100% all three episodes, and have replayed each several times. The game definitely isn't for everyone, and some people might get motion sickness from playing (camera is a bit wonky at times, definitely happened to me a few times). It's jank and a bit clunky, but it's that good kind of jank that ended up being really fun after leaning the mechanics more. I honestly really wanna see more and hope we get an announcement for episode 4 at some point (haven't heard anything personally). There's a lot more I'd like to say, but I've already said a lot. Give the game a shot if you're looking for a fun and quirky 3D adventure game with some surprising depth.
