«Broken Minds»

This is a adventure game, so I won't talk about the gameplay. The strongest thing about this game is it's story and everything related to it. The story is pretty interesting and it did keep me hooked to the screen despite not having a shocking twist or big reveal. It is a simple story, but quite an enjoyable one. Six endings. An excellent story, many choices, awesome and hidden secrets. What more do you need for an excellent adventure?
Alright, so lemme just admit straight up that I do not enjoy visual novels at all (unless you consider Phoenix Wright a visual novel, or your dad's Playboy magazines) so I went into Broken Minds with stupidly low expectations. The fact that I streamed this on Twitch and had some viewer interaction added to my enjoyment of the game but once I discovered the text-to-speech narration (enabled with 'V') the poop then hit the fan with extreme force and we all started enjoying Broken Minds immensely in a silly way. Main issues I have with the game: the mini-games are really difficult. They mostly consist of being able to unravel statements with logical fallacies, picking which parts of the brain correlate to a person's actions, and situating the correct characters in the appropriate environments. These then culminate into selecting the final "evidence" that points the finger at whodunnit. These puzzles often didn't make any sense to me so I mostly brute forced every solution without putting much thought into them. To be honest I was expecting the reading to be broken up by point-and-click detective style gameplay in a similar vein to Phoenix Wright. I was Pheonix Wrong. The story is set in 1990s Japan and revolves around a young woman whose parents die under suspicious circumstances, hiring a detective agency to find out who is responsible and why... with consequences. The art style is awesome, where both myself and others have likened it to a style similar to Gorillaz. The soundtrack also dope, I enjoyed bopping to it a fair amount. The sparse animation during cutscenes is also really well done. Unfortunately the weakest aspect is the writing and grammar, there are many typographical and grammatical errors throughout, run on sentences, unexplained references to pop-culture, and strange motivations in regards to some of the characters. To be honest Broken Minds never really felt like it was set in 1992 but it didn't bother me too much. The reason why I chose to play Broken Minds is because I seriously found that the art style and music really tickled my pickle. I think it was probably wrong of me to expect the gameplay to have more detective work than I thought. I've read that the developer is working on improving and even removing some of what makes the puzzles and narrative elements a bit too convoluted. So A+ from me to see the developer take this all in stride as I'm a fairly critical person when it comes to games, films, and television in general. I wasn't too keen on Broken Minds during my first hours through the game but I came right around by the end and started enjoying myself.
Initially I was drawn to the game for the artwork. I liked the cut out cartoon style it had. Upon playing the game I sadly found that that is its only positive. The movement controls won't obey. You can't go left or right sometimes, I'd click left and go forward, click forward go right. The writing... This story feels like it was written by a recently punished preteen and this is their revenge on their oppressive parents. The parent figures in the story are portrayed as absurdly verbally mean, nearly to a level of verbal mental abuse. The events are not original and can be called generic. For a story based game this lacks substance.
Truly a hidden gem :) The store page makes it look a bit bland and cheap, but it's actually a quality VN. It's not just a "Click Next"-VN, but you have to focus on what's happening. The story is pretty good and I would recommend to play it on "Master Detective"-Mode to get all the interesting mini-games wich are well done :) The VN also has multiple endings, depending on your choices and after unlocking them you can get the true ending(s?). Unfortunately I have to say that I felt that the VN could have been better with less endings, since you are forced to do them to unlock the final ones. Even with the skip function it takes a bit of time for a playthrough since you still have to navigate through the rooms, etc. So it felt kind of tedious after a while and it didn't feel like the endings offered something surprisingly new for me. But that said, I enjoyed my first playthrough of the story so much that I wouldn't even be mad if there were no other endings. So it's definitely worth it :) Note: If you have supported the giant "Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality" on itchio, you may already have this game in your itch-library :)
Note: not for all! It's not an easy reading nextnextskipskip VN, you should have a sense of logic, pay attention to details and words. I'm not sure about a genre, but it's mostly Visual Novel. But you should pay attention for all (that's what for 3 big arrows on the screen — for a little bit exploring and for deeper immersion); otherwise you'll get stuck with logic minigames, delete the game in frustration and will never know how great the game is. So, the phrase "the gameplay consists of logic and reading comprehension puzzles" is completely true, and you can't go on to the next part by pressing "skip". Great: + art style + soundtrack + quality + rewarding for those who seek for "true" endings + story + story from different points of view Complicated: (only for the first walkthrough) some parts of gameplay, but you can turn an Easy Mode in the most complicated logic mini-game that based on searching logical fallacies in arguments. And I am looking forward to the second game!
A visual novel interspersed with minigames. Technically a 'mystery', though it's really unusual in how it plays out (you are mainly shooting down the fallacious reasoning of those around you). Not your usual VN by any means, weird as heck, very unique art and musical style, tons of charm. I really love it.
Broken Minds is barely a game, it's a Ren'Py e-book that's been dumped on Steam. As a visual/interactive novel, this doesn't feature much in the way of notable gameplay, it's just a lot of clicking through badly written dialogue that would never have been accepted or published in print, which poses the question, "How did something this badly written end up on Steam?". When someone hoping to become an author is unable to get published in print, they spend $100 and dump their high school fan-fiction onto Steam, under the guise of a game. This e-book was slapped together with the godawfully bad RenPy Visual Novel/E-Book construction kit, so just like no professional writing took place here, no professional game development took place either, it's just a product of filling out templates in the construction kit. This E-book features Choose-Your-Own-Adventure elements where you make some decisions that don't do anything to change the fact this is just an E-Book. Nobody finished reading a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book and said "Boy, what a great game I just played!". Because E-books aren't games. And neither is this. There are some simple puzzles in the E-book, kind of like getting halfway through a Dan Brown disaster (but the writing here is worse than Dan Brown, if such a thing is possible) and discovering a kid's maze in the middle of the book. These minigames can largely be disregarded, they're terrible, and the focus here is simply trying to publish a book on Steam. Visual novels/e-books are tedious at best... imagine the best novel you ever read, be that Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy or 2001: A Space Odyssey or Twilight (if you have terrible taste in literature), but then translate that to a format where the words dribble out and you have to click your mouse every time you wanted to read the next sentence, instead of just turning the pages. You'd think it was garbage. Now imagine that experience, but with much worse writing (because if these guys could write professionally, they'd be published authors and this would be on shelves in bookstores, and they wouldn't have to pay Valve $100 to self-publish this on Steam), and you have your average Steam e-book. One of the chief problems with failed authors polluting Steam with non-game E-books is that E-books can easily just be presented in a web browser... there's no justification for charging money on Steam for what might as well be a webpage. We don't spend thousands on buying a gaming rig to spend money on Steam for something Chrome or Firefox could do. The E-Book only displays in 4:3 pillarboxed aspect ratio. It's possible they developed this using an old CRT they found in a dumpster, or this E-Book has been specifically designed for people gaming on PC's from 1995... either way, this isn't really acceptable in the modern era of PC gaming. These technical defects push this E-Book below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. You don't have to take my word about how bad the E-Book is, we can measure the interest in a game by how much people bothered to play it. Broken Minds has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the E-Book absolutely failed to capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for finishing the e-book, trivial to achieve, but less than 9 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the E-Book. That's a tiny, tiny proportion of gamers who even bothered with this. Ouch. The poor quality of this E-Book is also reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak reader number was only 5 readers. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only reader activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality E-Book is to be expected. So, should you buy this E-Book? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? Broken Minds has the insane price of around $7 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. For comparison, the $7 asking price for this game could get you games like "The Witcher 2", "The Walking Dead" or "Dragon Age: Origins". You can get better quality books and comics for free online or from public libraries, or from bookstores for a fraction of the price of this "game". Steam isn't a comic book store, neither is it Netflix, it's for games. Your gaming rig is not a Kindle. It's impossible for me to recommend things to PC gamers that aren't really games.
