Broken Mind is an action Survival Horror game that follows Frank Morgan, a grizzled detective whose past trauma consumes him. Tasked with finding the kidnapped streamer Laura Campbell, the race is on to find her in time. As a fan of indie games I found this to be fascinating to play. The game play is creative and utilises the environments well which in turn makes solving the game's puzzles extremely satisfying. I also liked the style as well which many have compared to old 2000s flash animations. There are also a lot of genuinely tense moments in the game making you wonder what is truly going on behind the disappearance of Laura. I'm not going to lie, I did jump a few times and felt uneasy which is the best thing for a survival horror game such as this! There are a few cons however. For me personally I feel like some of the voice acting lines could have had a once over but they're definitely not the worst I've ever heard in a game. Some areas can get a little repetitive and with a lack of background music it doesn't help when you're left with only the sound of your feet squelching on the dirt. Also not too sure how I feel about the ending but again that's more of a subjective feel rather than a critique of the game as a whole. One thing I would also recommend is playing the game in "Easy" mode at a minimum. While the Narrative mode does state that all of the fights are taken out bar the mandatory ones, this is really noticeable when you're running through what feels like liminal spaces with tons of ammo and nothing to fight. But overall would I recommend this game? Absolutely! It's a short survival horror game that, while treading on a few cliches here and there, is a clear labour of love. You can tell the developer's passion for making the game shines through and I honestly think they did amazing work with this. For the price point as well definitely go check it out you will not be disappointed!
I quite liked the graphic/art style used for this game. It's 3D but with a 2D feel. I also like that the game is fully voiced which is great. Brings the characters to life. The game's story revolves around a girl named Laura. Is she alive? Who knows. So far so good. Gameplay Impressions: https://youtu.be/2nxNf_SO7S4
A bit repetitive combat and short length doesn’t take away from the game’s story and unique art. You take control of Frank Morgan, a detective tormented by a tragedy. When he receives a fresh case involving a missing little girl, he finally has an opportunity to make things right and do what he was unable to do in the past. The gameplay combines features from various genres, making it difficult to categorize. The gamepad is supported and works well, but I recommend using the keyboard and mouse because the game follows the first-person shooter style. Aside from basic movement, you can crouch to navigate small passages, sprint for a short time, interact with the environment, and attack. Although you carry a gun, ammo is in short supply, so I'd save it for tricky occasions. The emphasis is on close combat because each weapon can be utilized as a melee weapon. Combat is simple to understand but still manages to add some strategic elements. You can use a kick to target the lower body or a simple melee attack on the upper body. This is important when an enemy blocks your attacks. If you hit an unguarded portion of the body, you will deliver double damage. However, if you strike a block, the enemy will counterattack. Despite the fact that melee combat requires stamina, it isn't that bad. It recharges quickly and allows you to attack an enemy without limiting your options. You don't have to worry about making mistakes because you have a dash that allows you to jump back. If you don’t want to bother with that, you can also easily bait an enemy into attack, move back, and quickly attack. Another great feature is that the game immediately locks onto an enemy. This allows you to dodge more successfully. Since there are only two types of enemies, you don’t even have to learn attack patterns. Saving is done automatically through checkpoints. Difficulty options let you enjoy the game regardless of your skill level. Aside from the three primary modes that change enemy strength and the number of resources, there is a "narrative" setting that removes almost all combat encounters and turns the game into a walking sim. Outside of fighting, the game focuses on exploration and solving simple puzzles. They might include logic challenges or item combinations. When you come close and point at interactable objects, they will gain an extra circle, and pressing the button will cause you to execute an action or receive a description. Sometimes you'll need to use the right item from your inventory, but everything makes sense and doesn't force you to wander aimlessly through a stage, not knowing what to do. Important items are difficult to miss due to the unusual graphic design. Scenes are vibrant, so you'll notice a piece of paper or a key on top of a chest of drawers right away. Art looks great because it combines 3D objects with flat 2D images. The whole thing looks like a cartoon. Although the game has ten chapters, and sometimes puts you in control of another character that has to hide from the enemy, the overall experience does not take long to complete. Stages are relatively linear and provide no room for exploration. The only special item are four music boxes that can be easily missed, Each chapter takes you through narrow corridors or small areas. Your remaining health and everything you collect carry over across some chapters. However, since you jump to other locations and characters, health is sometimes restored and items taken away.
Really enjoyed the art style of this game. SO RECOMMENDED!
