I really like the simple concept. There is a lot of depth to it, surprisingly. I love that the dev included a Hotseat mode - very underappreciated these days. I especially enjoyed the little combat videos that played when two units were fighting. I wonder how this same game would fare in a fantasy setting. To be quite honest though, I bought it on sale and would not have gotten it for the full price at the time (I bought it for about 8 Euro).
I have mixed feelings about this game, so I will write the review and decide at the end if I recommend it or not. (This got a little long winded, if you want the short version skip to the conclusion at the bottom). First, it is important to note that this game is a newer version of a previous game, Broadsword: Age of Chivalry , that is no longer on this site--probably do to having a negative review tag. I never played the original game, but I looked up videos and reviews of it. The maps and graphics are the same. Based on what I saw and read, there have been at least a few additions and changes made to the game. Firstly, Poland has been added to the game both as a playable power and an additional campaign. While watching a video review of Broadsword: Age of Chivalry by ErebosGamingHD I noticed that the menus for research have been improved. I recommend watching the video review, it does a great job of quickly critiquing the game. Here is a link to the video review by ErebosGamingHD on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBgex4gsdYs This is a medieval, turn-based, strategy wargame that can be played in three modes, 1. Campaign 2. Champion Mode 3. Hot Seat The Campaign is linear and consists of three scenarios. Each scenario is broken down into a number of battles that you must beat to progress. In the first scenario, the tutorial, you play as the French with Joan of Arc as your hero. I only played through the tutorial scenario hoping that it would unlock all of the other scenarios. Unfortunately, you have to play the scenarios in order: French, English, Spanish, Hapsburg, Polish. I would recommend playing at least the first two battles of the tutorial scenario, because they go over a lot of the basics you will need to play the game. In Champion Mode you play against one AI opponent. You can select which map to play, the goal of the game (kill the opposing player's (op) hero, take the op's capital, or annihilate the op), and which nations will be played. There is also a choice of using Fog of War. I did not play Hot Seat, but it would probably be the best way to play this game. The AI is not very smart. The game plays on some old themes where you have several buildings that need to be built for troop production (stables for cavalry, forge for infantry, archery range for archers, and engineering shop for siege weapons) and you have several scarce resources around the map that need to be acquired and improved for your food (troop limit), lumber (building), gold (purchasing power). There are between 15 and 20 different troops that you can purchase and each nation has at least one unique troop; however, I was not able to figure out exactly which types of troops work best against which other troops in the brief time I played. It would be nice have a guide that explains this. Conclusion: The game is not very deep, it needs some form of a guide to explain the units, the concept is not original, the cost is too high. So thumbs down on full price. However, if you love turn-based strategy, do not feel like playing something as deep as Civilization (in any of its numerous incarnations), and you can buy this on sale, I would recommend it. (I'm going to recommend it, because I hope the developer sees this review and makes improvements to the game). Another bonus: This game will run on a potato.
