It’s hard to recommend Breath of Death VII: The Beginning: Reanimated to anyone but fans of the 2010 original and maybe to a few of those diehard aficionados of super old-school JRPGS. Bad? No. It’s actually a pretty good game, but it leans too much on comedy to be immersive, and its short length makes it feel more like a taste of something more epic in scale and scope. Amazing remake of a great game
Seguiremos informando. Pepinillos dixit. No toméis drogas.
Breath of Death VII: The Beginning: Reanimated is a beautifully modernized revival of one of indie gaming’s most beloved retro-inspired RPGs, successfully transforming a once minimalist cult classic into a polished and visually upgraded adventure without sacrificing the humor, pacing, and charm that made the original memorable. What makes this remake especially impressive is how carefully it respects its roots while still improving nearly every aspect of the presentation and gameplay. Rather than reinventing the experience completely, the game focuses on refining and enhancing the original formula, creating a compact but highly entertaining role-playing adventure that feels nostalgic without becoming outdated. The story takes place in a strange post-human fantasy world populated almost entirely by undead creatures and monsters after humanity has vanished long ago. Players follow Dem, a silent skeleton knight who unexpectedly becomes involved in a larger conflict threatening the fragile balance of the world. Along the journey, Dem is joined by a colorful cast of companions including Sara, a sarcastic ghost historian, Lita, a technologically minded vampire, and Erik, an overly dramatic zombie prince. The setup is intentionally absurd, but the game uses that absurdity to create a surprisingly engaging and funny adventure filled with playful character interactions and self-aware humor. One of the game’s strongest qualities is its writing. Breath of Death VII constantly pokes fun at classic RPG tropes, fantasy clichés, and old-school game design conventions while still maintaining genuine affection for the genre it parodies. The humor rarely feels forced because the game balances comedy with sincerity extremely well. Characters joke about dungeon design, random encounters, and role-playing stereotypes, but they still develop enjoyable chemistry throughout the adventure. The dialogue remains consistently entertaining without becoming overly obnoxious or relying too heavily on internet humor. The pacing is another major strength. Unlike many modern RPGs that stretch far beyond their natural lifespan, Breath of Death VII keeps its campaign concise and focused. The adventure typically lasts only several hours, but that shorter runtime works heavily in the game’s favor because the experience never feels bloated with filler content or repetitive side activities. Every dungeon, boss encounter, and story segment contributes directly to the momentum of the adventure, creating a tightly structured RPG that remains consistently enjoyable from beginning to end. Combat is where the game becomes surprisingly strategic despite its simple appearance. The battle system uses classic turn-based mechanics but adds several unique systems that encourage aggressive and efficient play. Combo chains increase the power of abilities as battles continue, rewarding players for maintaining offensive momentum and carefully planning attack sequences. At the same time, enemies grow stronger during prolonged encounters, creating constant pressure to end fights quickly before the situation becomes overwhelming. This dynamic gives battles a faster and more energetic rhythm compared to many slower retro-style RPGs. The Unite Techniques system also adds extra depth by allowing party members to combine abilities into stronger attacks and support skills. Experimenting with character combinations and ability timing becomes satisfying because different strategies can dramatically change the flow of combat. Frequent level progression and character upgrades further help maintain engagement throughout the relatively short campaign. Even though the overall system remains accessible, there is enough tactical variety to keep encounters consistently enjoyable. The remake’s visual overhaul is easily one of its biggest accomplishments. The original version intentionally resembled a low-budget 8-bit RPG, but Reanimated rebuilds the experience with significantly improved pixel art, smoother animations, more detailed environments, and modernized interface design while still preserving the retro atmosphere. Towns feel more alive, dungeons appear far more visually distinct, and combat effects are dramatically more satisfying. The art direction succeeds because it modernizes the game without erasing its old-school identity. The soundtrack is equally impressive. The music perfectly captures the adventurous tone of classic role-playing games while sounding far richer and more polished than the original release. Battle themes are energetic, dungeon music creates strong atmosphere, and town themes reinforce the game’s comedic and lighthearted tone. The soundtrack consistently elevates the adventure and helps the world feel much larger and more memorable despite the game’s relatively small scale. Another enjoyable addition is the inclusion of extra gameplay modes and replay features. Dragonduck Mode introduces additional maps, enemies, relics, and gameplay variations that give players more reasons to revisit the game after completing the main story. Difficulty settings and replay incentives also help increase the overall longevity despite the campaign’s short runtime. The game’s retro design philosophy, however, may not appeal to everyone. Exploration remains fairly straightforward, dungeon layouts are relatively simple, and the progression systems lack the complexity found in larger modern RPGs. Players looking for massive open worlds, intricate side quests, or deeply customizable character systems may find the overall scope somewhat limited compared to contemporary role-playing games. The short length can also feel disappointing for players who become heavily invested in the world and characters. While the focused pacing is one of the game’s greatest strengths, some players may still wish there were additional optional dungeons, expanded storylines, or more post-game content available. Resource management during dungeons can occasionally become frustrating as well, particularly because MP recovery remains somewhat restrictive during longer stretches of exploration. A few quality-of-life issues also remain noticeable. The lack of autosave feels outdated, and movement occasionally feels slightly slippery during exploration sections. These issues are relatively minor overall, but they stand out more because the remake improves so many other aspects of the original experience so successfully. Despite these limitations, Breath of Death VII: The Beginning: Reanimated succeeds because it understands exactly what made the original game special. It delivers a fast-paced, charming, and mechanically satisfying RPG adventure that respects classic genre traditions while streamlining many of the frustrations associated with older role-playing games. The remake manages to feel nostalgic without relying entirely on nostalgia, creating an experience that works equally well for longtime fans and newcomers discovering the game for the first time. What ultimately makes the game so enjoyable is its confidence in simplicity. Rather than overwhelming players with endless systems and excessive content, it focuses entirely on delivering memorable characters, satisfying combat, strong pacing, and entertaining humor within a tightly structured adventure. Breath of Death VII: The Beginning: Reanimated stands as one of the best examples of how to modernize a retro-inspired indie RPG while preserving the personality and charm that made the original memorable. Its upgraded presentation, energetic soundtrack, enjoyable combat systems, and consistently entertaining writing combine into a compact but highly polished adventure that captures the spirit of classic role-playing games without feeling trapped in the past. Rating: 8/10
It's just a good old game with a fresh face. This gem has a few quality-of-life improvements and new graphics. This old-school, turn-based RPG is a lot of fun. It's called The Beginning now. I hope there will be a sequel!?Sadly, some things were left as is,
e.g., the scaling of the Fireball is still miserable
. All in all, I had fun replaying this game.
perfectly alright parody jrpg that will kill about 3-5 hours of your life successfully. i miss the old boss theme tho. the fact this remake has no unique boss theme at all is perplexing.
"Breath of Death VII - The Beginning - Reanimated".
A fun shorter turn based RPG in which the humor surprised me. Hard mode is far too annoying to be worth the effort and normal is a bit too easy. All the achievements are naturally obtainable (sans buying an item. finding peoples secret weapons, & using the chat command). It would have been nice to be able to change difficulty mid game instead of starting over after an hour. The hidden Dragonduck boss is also the least hidden boss I've ever seen in one of the most straight forward dungeons possible. This game has charm though; fleeced in through doofery. That's alright sometimes.
Simple, straightforward tactical role-playing game faithfully remade from the original. Try Dragonduck mode (short, but sweet).
