I find it quite frustrating to play. Cool idea, but in my opinion, breakout just doesn't work with this kind of game. Brick on the side slip through too often and you have so many things to catch (balls & XP) that you can't always aim the balls correctly. This combined with the continued downward movement of the bricks becomes quite stressful (to me at least)
The difficulty is well-balanced and requires constant focus. There is a system to disable certain upgrades, allowing you to focus on the type of gameplay you enjoy. Quite challenging at times.
This has to be one of my most favorite games. It's a great game to zone out to. The different tools you can collect are helpful, and I like that players can determine which tools they get offered. I like to shut off a whole bunch of available options and just keep the ones I want to use in the game. Breaking Survivors on the SteamDeck is a stellar experience, imho.

Breaking Survivors is a smart and energetic indie title that takes the familiar foundations of classic brick-breaker games and reinvents them through the lens of modern roguelite and survivor-style design. Developed and published by Axel Born, the game immediately feels both nostalgic and contemporary, drawing on decades-old arcade mechanics while layering in progression systems, build experimentation, and escalating pressure that keep each run feeling tense and distinct. What initially looks like a simple twist on Breakout quickly reveals itself as a surprisingly deep test of reflexes, planning, and adaptability. At its core, the gameplay revolves around controlling a paddle at the bottom of the screen, bouncing balls upward to destroy waves of descending bricks. Unlike traditional brick-breakers where the goal is simply to clear a static layout, Breaking Survivors introduces constant forward momentum by having the brick formations slowly advance toward the player. This creates a persistent sense of urgency, as failing to thin the wave quickly enough results in direct damage and eventual defeat. Every movement of the paddle matters, turning even minor positioning mistakes into costly errors as the screen fills with threats. The game’s defining strength lies in how it integrates roguelite progression into this arcade framework. Destroyed bricks can drop experience pickups, which must be actively collected by the paddle to level up during a run. Each level-up presents a choice of upgrades that can dramatically reshape how the game plays, encouraging players to think strategically rather than relying purely on reflexes. These upgrades range from simple statistical boosts, like faster paddle movement or increased size, to transformative effects that alter how balls behave and interact with bricks. Ball variety is where Breaking Survivors truly comes alive. Players can unlock and equip multiple ball types, each with unique behaviors such as splitting on impact, piercing through multiple bricks, bouncing erratically, or triggering explosive effects. Combining these balls leads to emergent synergies, where the screen can quickly erupt into controlled chaos as dozens of projectiles ricochet simultaneously. Finding a powerful combination feels immensely satisfying, and much of the game’s replay value comes from experimenting with different builds to see how far they can carry you. As runs progress, difficulty ramps up in a steady but demanding fashion. Brick formations become denser and more resilient, forcing players to optimize their upgrades and react quickly to changing patterns. The game strikes a careful balance between overwhelming intensity and manageable challenge, frequently pushing players to the brink without feeling unfair. This escalation ensures that success feels earned, especially during longer runs where survival depends on both smart upgrade choices and consistent execution under pressure. Visually, Breaking Survivors opts for clean, readable presentation over flashy excess. Bricks, balls, and effects are clearly differentiated, which is crucial when the screen becomes crowded with projectiles. Visual clarity ensures that players can make quick decisions even during the most chaotic moments. Sound design reinforces this clarity, with impactful audio cues for hits, upgrades, and damage that provide immediate feedback and help players stay oriented amid the action. Accessibility is another area where the game excels. Controls are intuitive and responsive, making it easy to pick up and play even for those unfamiliar with roguelites or classic arcade games. At the same time, the depth introduced by build variety and escalating difficulty offers plenty of room for mastery. Online leaderboards further encourage competition, rewarding players who refine their strategies and push for higher scores or longer survival times. That said, the game’s relatively compact scope becomes more noticeable over extended play. While the core loop remains enjoyable, players may eventually encounter familiar upgrade paths and brick patterns, which can slightly diminish the sense of discovery. Some minor rough edges, typical of small indie projects, can also surface, though they rarely detract from the overall experience in a meaningful way. Ultimately, Breaking Survivors succeeds by respecting the simplicity of its arcade roots while intelligently expanding upon them. It delivers a tightly focused experience that thrives on fast decision-making, creative experimentation, and escalating tension. For players who enjoy survivor-style progression, roguelite replayability, or classic brick-breaking gameplay reimagined for modern sensibilities, it offers a compelling and addictive challenge that proves even the simplest concepts can still feel fresh when thoughtfully redesigned.
Nice game and nice interpretation of a breakout game. but please more music, it is just one track repeating over and over again...
