Why, the amount they're selling this game for is simply outlandish! I would have to extract every ounce from my coffers and tenfold until I could even glimpse the exorbitant cost of this game.
Great idea, poor execution, sadly. I would love to see a game like that being well done. (and I would pay for it)
BLOODSONG is a distinctive indie adventure that turns musical awareness into an essential part of combat and exploration. Developed and published by Three Owls In a Trench Coat, the game follows Mari, a musically gifted teenage siren princess who possesses a dangerous supernatural ability known as a bloodsong. Rather than embracing the expectations placed upon her by her royal family, Mari has a far more immediate concern: escaping the palace and reaching the concert where her band is supposed to perform. This relatively simple objective establishes a humorous and rebellious tone while giving the adventure an identity that feels different from the usual fantasy story about saving kingdoms or defeating ancient evils. Mari's personality is central to the game's charm. She is essentially a punk-rock teenager trapped within the responsibilities of underwater royalty, and her relationship with her siren queen mother provides the conflict that pushes the adventure forward. Her bloodsong allows her to transform music into destructive power, making her musical talent far more than a narrative detail. The contrast between royal expectations, teenage rebellion, supernatural abilities, and the determination to perform at a concert creates an intentionally exaggerated premise that fits the game's playful attitude. The most interesting aspect of BLOODSONG is its approach to combat. Instead of treating music as background decoration or relying entirely on traditional rhythm-game prompts, the game asks players to listen carefully to melodies associated with enemies. Opponents have their own bloodsongs, and recognizing musical pitches becomes part of figuring out how to overcome them. This makes listening an active gameplay skill. Battles can consequently resemble musical puzzles in which observation and recognition are just as important as movement and conventional action. This mechanic separates BLOODSONG from rhythm games built primarily around pressing buttons in synchronization with visible notes. The emphasis on hearing and matching pitch creates a more unusual challenge, especially for players with a natural interest in music. Successfully understanding an enemy's melody can make encounters feel satisfying because the player is responding to something they have actually heard rather than simply following an interface. The downside is that pitch recognition is a specialized ability. Players who find it difficult to distinguish musical notes may need more time to become comfortable with the central system, making the experience somewhat less immediately accessible than a typical action game. Exploration provides the framework surrounding these musical encounters. Mari journeys through an underwater environment filled with caverns and dangerous aquatic inhabitants while trying to put distance between herself and the palace. The adventure also incorporates a rough undersea settlement and enemies such as hostile anglerfish and mischievous crabs. These creatures demonstrate the game's willingness to mix atmospheric fantasy with humor. BLOODSONG does not appear interested in maintaining an entirely serious mood, instead allowing strange characters and absurd situations to coexist with darker underwater scenery. The setting is particularly appropriate for the musical concept. Sirens are traditionally associated with supernatural songs, so turning those songs into an actual gameplay system feels more meaningful than simply attaching rhythm mechanics to an unrelated fantasy world. Mari's punk-inspired characterization then gives the mythology a modern and rebellious twist. Her music represents both personal expression and literal power, which creates a surprisingly coherent connection between the protagonist, narrative, setting, and mechanics. BLOODSONG also blends several genres rather than committing completely to one established formula. Action, adventure, exploration, rhythm elements, musical challenges, and combat all contribute to the overall experience. Players approaching it purely as a rhythm game may find that exploration and adventure occupy more attention than expected, while those looking for straightforward action should be prepared for music recognition to play a major role. The hybrid structure is most appealing when approached as an experimental adventure that uses music to reshape familiar combat ideas. The game's greatest strength is ultimately its originality rather than sheer mechanical complexity. A teenage siren princess using musical pitch as a supernatural weapon while attempting to reach her band's concert is an inherently memorable concept. Even the relatively modest objective works in the game's favor because it keeps Mari's personality at the center of events. Her mission feels important because it matters to her, not because the story needs another enormous world-ending threat. There are still reasons why BLOODSONG may have a limited audience. Its central pitch-matching concept is unusual enough that enjoyment will depend heavily on how much the player appreciates listening-based challenges. Anyone expecting an extensive traditional combat system or a conventional note-chart rhythm experience could find the design different from what they anticipated. The technical requirements presented on its Steam listing also seem unusually high in certain areas for a game of this scope, while some listed specifications appear inconsistent enough that prospective players should treat them cautiously. As a free-to-play title, however, BLOODSONG represents an interesting opportunity to experience an indie developer experimenting with the relationship between music and interactive combat. Three Owls In a Trench Coat has created something with a recognizable personality rather than simply following a familiar genre template. The combination of underwater fantasy, punk attitude, musical pitch recognition, strange sea creatures, exploration, and teenage rebellion gives the game a character that compensates for some of its niche design choices. It may not appeal equally to every action or rhythm fan, but players interested in unconventional musical gameplay have a good reason to give Mari's chaotic journey a chance. Rating: 6/10
