Blink:Rogues, a fresh take on a thousand done before
Blink:Rogues is a relatively new top down shooter with a simple but unique twist, because the complexity of this game is rather simple this will be a short review but it will be a worthwhile one. I know top down shooters! Almost everyone knows what a top down shooter is like and hwo to play it, Blink isn’t any different than any other on that part, it features the same waves of enemies system where you have a base attack that always fires and some special attacks; this is a relatively common format in top down shooters. Luckily it’s not the same old stuff you’re used to: Blink is in fact always a split screen experience regardless if you play alone or with a friend, this is because of an important mechanic which is swapping your plane over to the other side of the screen to get extra points, health, ammo and dodge unbeatable waves of enemies. This is a fun concept as it makes the gameplay more dynamic and doesn’t have you falling asleep at your keyboard and it allows for pretty seamless dual player integration meaning that you can easily play it with a friend with the game barely changing. Is this a industry changer? No it’s not but it’s still a very fun mechanic to play around with. Graphics and sounds Despite being a top down shooter Blink is actually rendered in Unreal Engine 4 which may seem a bit overkill at first but because it’s displayed at very small quantities should not only most pc’s cope with it but it also looks very pretty to look at it, at least for a top down shooter that is. Because everything is rendered in 3D and not as a 2D graphic it looks a lot more real as well and I enjoy that. When it comes to sounds it’s handled good but not exceptional, the constant firing mechanism doesn’t have an annoying noise and the soundtrack is all right for the subject but it’s not the best nor are the firing sounds the most entertaining and amazing to listen to for 20.000 times but they’re good enough for you to not want to cut off your ears Conclusion Blink:Rogues is a fun little game with a proper storyline, although a bit cheesy, and nice animations and graphics to go with it. The gameplay doesn’t get too repetitive and it keeps being enjoyable for quite some time, offering seamless hotseat play as well makes it not just fun to play by yourself but fun to play with friends as well. For its measly 4 Euro price tag I would recommend it to play for most people if you’re into top down shooters with a pretty medium level of difficulty this is for you.

Grab a friend, get two controllers and go fragging! Hitting a blink+flip+rocket_in_the_face combo makes me happy inside :) Also cool music/graphics. The only thing missing is online multiplayer, hopefully they'll add it in the future.

I am pretty terrible at reviews so I might edit this in the future to improve it. Blink: Rogues is a pretty interesting shmup which uses splitscreen for its main feature - lane teleporting. Each half of the screen is a different lane with different enemy/obstacle placements. If you simply want to survive, teleporting to the opposite lane to avoid enemy fire is a viable strategy. But if you want to get to the top of the leaderboards, you must take the risk and attempt to defeat any enemy you see. My favorite thing to do in this game is to just replay levels and try my best at getting the highest score possible, which is not easy. In order to get the most points possible you must keep your score multiplier up by killing enemies. Getting hit a single time resets your score multiplier to 0. So you can either risk it all by going for every enemy, or play it safe and only go for certain ones. There is also a versus mode where the player with the highest score at the end of a round wins. You increase can increase your score by killing regular enemies or the enemy player. You can also fight against an AI, I haven't played much of the versus mode but I can say that the AI is pretty good and can be tough to beat at times.
This game brings memories of Raptor: Call of the Shadows...Heh. Blink Rogues it's nice and it has super engaging battles however some parts of the game can be improved upon release. Disclaimer: I only played single player and here are some things that I think they need some improvments 1) Art The backgrounds(lands) are way too realistic in compare with the ships and the enemies. In my opinion they are from a different movie. 2) Mechanics and Gameplay I like the split screen thing and the fact that you can telport to the other player screen. But I think the main mechanic is underused. I didn't had many moments throughout the game where I need to use it as my screen was pack with enemies and you don't have time to teleport to the other screen as you are too focus on your part. Think on more ways how to use this mechanic in the game (eg. Go and fight more bosses where you need teleport/ some enemies that are harder to kill can also teleport/ more respiro moments on your side) Visually differentiate more the bullets which gives you much more damage. If for example you are stuck between two bullets you cannot take a decision from which bullet you want to take a hit in order to take less damage. The same enemy changes it's movement behaviour too soon in the game. And the problem is that you cannot indentify a pattern for it. Since it's a fast paced game the human brain it's able to quickly take some decision and plan the next moves based on some patterns. The problem is that the game becomse too chaotic so you need to find a right balance between chaotic and becoming too boring. In single player mode I don't feel a sense of progress at all. I should be rewarded somehow when I start the next mission . Eg better ship / better weapons etc. That powerup (double damage) it's a bit confusing how it's currently design. You don't understand very well when it's no longer on or off. Maybe emphasis it more with visual effects. PS: I would like to play this with a mouse :)
Vaše loď má kromě klasické střelby možnost jakési brokovnice, raket a laseru. Přičemž každá zbraň je barevně oddělena. Zároveň můžete svou loď převracet o 180° a na konci každého levelu narazíte na bosse. Tuto kampaň si také můžete zahrát v kooperaci s kamarádem a navzájem si pomoci. Dále zde máte možnost lokálního multiplayeru, a tedy i podpory Steam Remote Play Together. A v neposlední řadě můžete do souboje vyzvat i AI, kde si můžete nastavit různé obtížnosti.
Very fun game , played it with a couple of friends and we had a lot of fun. Keep up the good work.

Disclaimer: I'm friends with the devs and helped out a bit with coding The gameplay is an attempt to spice up the classical shmup game mode with two parallel screens which you can switch between. Enemies and power ups spawn in either, so you have to switch at opportune times. There's also a local pvp mode with two players where both can invade each other's screen in order to steal the points and power ups, turning it into a bloody fun competition. The graphics are simplified, but easy to understand, and the screen switching is easy to pull off once you get used to it. It's rough around the edges, but it is an interesting game.
Follow my curator page for more recommendations!
TL;DR: A unique shmup with interesting mechanics like being able to blink to different sides of the screen and flipping upside down to attack enemies coming from below. It seems like it'd be the most fun played in co-op or PvP with a friend. There's a lot of modes (even one that lets you watch two AI fight!) and it's pretty cheap. I'd recommend it if you're a shmup fan. Blink: Rogues is a bullet hell shoot 'em up and Fox Dive Studio's first release. I won't lie, I'm not a pro at shmups but I enjoy them. Ikaruga, Shoot 1UP, Tiger-Heli, and 1942 are my favorites. Thankfully Blink: Rogues is pretty friendly toward casual shmup players by having infinite lives in the story mode. This is countered by a 3 star rating system for each mission (10 total), as well as a Survival mode that is unlocked once you finish the story. In it you must complete all previous 10 missions back-to-back with a single life. I'd love to hear if anyone is even able to beat this, because at times the game can be pretty brutal with seemingly unavoidable hits. Outside of the story mode there is also PvP and co-op modes. You can play through the story with a friend, or play a separate co-op mode where you take damage if enemies get past your side of the screen (per player). There's also PvP where two players are fighting to gain a higher score than the other, while also being able to Blink over to the other side and fight each other. You can also PvP against a bot. The PvP against AI worked great and I really enjoyed using Blink to chase after the bot. There's also, interestingly enough, an "AI Showdown" where you can just watch two bots duke it out. Neat! I really appreciate all these options, but again I sadly had no way to test out the local co-op. The game seems perfect for playing with a friend, though! The game seems to be primarily made for playing with someone else, but unfortunately I had no way of testing that out since the game only supports local co-op/PvP. There were a lot of times while playing solo that I felt like it was impossible for me to kill all enemies on both sides of the screen. The game has a "Blink" mechanic where you can teleport from one side of the screen to the other, because otherwise you're stuck on one half of your screen. There's a bar down the middle, like you're playing a split-screen co-op game, and both sides have enemies coming in from all different sides. This is why I think the game was developed with co-op in mind, because it'd be a lot easier to have two players managing their own sides while blinking over to activate their abilities. You can also "flip" which has your ship jump into the air and flip upside down, so you can fire at enemies that are below you, because they very often will enter the screen from below. Honestly, I didn't use this that much. Maybe I was missing something but trying to flip over barriers was tough and I'd often just take damage, so I ended up just blinking to the other side to avoid them. However flipping upside down to take out an enemy underneath you felt pretty good when I occasionally had the chance to do so. Now let's get into my few complaints with the game. I think the game can be a wee bit brutal toward a solo player, there's times where you absolutely can't get all the enemies on both sides of the screens leading to a lower score and enemies killed percentage. I also ran into quite a few unavoidable deaths, usually caused by the enemies going slowly down the screen.. and then suddenly zipping down very fast without any warning. Even the barriers that look like concrete blocks do this occasionally. That leads me to my next complaint, the barriers. They're usually following enemies to shield them. However sometimes they're shielding both the top and bottom of an enemy, making me unsure how to deal with them. There's not enough space to jump in behind or in front of the enemy to deal with them, I'll take damage from hitting the concrete barrier, but I also can't seem to destroy the barriers unless I have the invincibility Blink power (one of the only abilities I enjoyed using), but then that'd require me to Blink to the other side, wait for the cooldown, then blink back over to my first side so that I have invincibility activated and can destroy it. By then it's likely already gone anyway. Blink abilities are a cool idea, and I imagine they probably work better in co-op, but in solo I kept feeling like either A.) the abilities are too weak (like Shockwave not even killing the smallest of enemies?) or B.) I wanted a way to activate them for the side I was currently on without having to Blink over, wait for the cooldown, then Blink back over again. Ramming everything with the invincibility Blink, however, was a lot of fun. A melee focused shmup sounds pretty cool actually, if that's not already a thing. Lastly, the music is a bit all over the place in terms of style, which is unfortunate. One mission it'll be retro-styled and almost sound like it belongs in the original DOOM, and the next mission you'll be listening to a modern pop song. There also doesn't seem to be a ton of tracks, maybe 5 or 6 excluding the menu songs? They seem to play at random when starting a mission too, so there's a chance to keep getting the same songs as you play through the story. The two songs that play in the main menu are really good, though! I just wish they played during a mission. Overall Blink: Rogues is a pretty solid shmup that very quickly ramps up difficulty, especially towards solo players. If that's your thing or you have someone to play with locally, I think it's definitely worth checking out. It's pretty cheap and there's a decent amount of modes and options here. The Blink mechanic is interesting, if not a bit flawed since some abilities just seem worse in every way compared to others (Invincibility > EMP > > > Shockwave). Still, even with my complaints I'd say it's definitely worth a look.
