9/10 - Cool Game and Story
Black Light Kills is a compact but mood-heavy psychological horror title developed by Fatih Atacan PRODUCTIONS and published by TallGrass Tapes Interactive that leans decisively into atmosphere, ambiguity, and mental unease rather than action or mechanical complexity. From the opening moments, the game establishes a somber, disorienting tone, placing players in the role of Aiden, a man drawn into a quiet town where disappearances, distorted memories, and creeping dread slowly erode any sense of normalcy. Rather than presenting a clear mystery to solve, the game invites players to experience a gradual psychological unraveling, using uncertainty as its primary narrative and emotional tool. Gameplay is rooted in slow-paced exploration and environmental interaction. Players move through deserted streets, claustrophobic interiors, and dimly lit spaces that feel deliberately stripped of comfort. There is no combat and very little in the way of traditional challenge; progress is driven by observation, triggering events, and piecing together fragments of story scattered throughout the environment. This design places emphasis on presence and attentiveness, encouraging players to absorb visual details, ambient sounds, and subtle environmental changes. The lack of mechanical complexity reinforces the sense that the real conflict is internal, not external, and that the player’s primary role is to witness and interpret rather than overcome obstacles through skill. The game’s strongest asset is its atmosphere. Visual design relies heavily on darkness, stark lighting contrasts, and empty spaces to create a feeling of isolation and vulnerability. Environments often feel intentionally uncanny, with familiar locations rendered slightly “off,” reinforcing the idea that Aiden’s perception of reality cannot be fully trusted. Sound design amplifies this effect through unsettling ambient noise, distant echoes, and sudden audio cues that heighten tension without relying excessively on traditional jump scares. Silence is used effectively, making even minor sounds feel threatening and keeping players in a constant state of unease. Narratively, Black Light Kills embraces ambiguity and psychological abstraction. The story unfolds indirectly, with minimal exposition and a heavy reliance on implication. Clues are revealed through environmental storytelling, fragmented dialogue, and surreal events that blur the line between hallucination and reality. This approach encourages interpretation, allowing players to form their own conclusions about what is happening and why. Multiple endings reinforce this open-ended structure, rewarding players who pay close attention or explore alternative paths. However, this same ambiguity can be divisive; players who prefer clear answers or tightly structured storytelling may find the experience frustrating or opaque. The pacing is deliberately slow, reinforcing the game’s introspective tone. Moments of apparent calm often stretch uncomfortably, creating anticipation rather than relief. While this measured rhythm enhances immersion for fans of slow-burn horror, it can also make the experience feel sparse or uneventful for those expecting frequent interaction or escalating threats. The limited interactivity and short overall length emphasize that Black Light Kills is designed as a focused narrative experience rather than a fully fleshed-out horror sandbox. Technically, the game reflects its indie scope. Animations and interactions are simple, and certain systems—such as saving or replaying specific sections—can feel restrictive. These limitations may break immersion for some players, but they do not fundamentally undermine the experience, especially given the game’s emphasis on mood over mechanics. Instead, they reinforce the feeling of a tightly constrained journey meant to be played in a small number of sittings rather than endlessly revisited. Overall, Black Light Kills succeeds as a psychological horror experience by committing fully to atmosphere, discomfort, and narrative ambiguity. It does not attempt to innovate mechanically or compete with larger horror titles in scope or polish, but instead focuses on delivering a haunting, introspective descent into a fractured mind. For players who appreciate slow exploration, environmental storytelling, and horror rooted in psychological tension rather than action, it offers a memorable and unsettling journey. Those seeking clear answers, dynamic gameplay systems, or high replay value may find its minimalism limiting, but within its intended scope, Black Light Kills delivers a cohesive and effectively disturbing experience. Rating: 6/10
Black Light Kills offers an intense horror experience where light is your only weapon and means of survival. I really enjoyed the game. It's impressive that it was made by a solo developer — the attention to detail and overall polish really stand out. I completed the game in about 50 minutes. It's perfect for those looking for a short but immersive horror experience. The biggest downside is the lack of a save system — you need to finish it in a single sitting, which might not suit everyone. Still, with its creative use of light mechanics, eerie atmosphere, and solid execution, Black Light Kills is a great indie horror game worth playing. Highly recommended for fans of short and tense experiences.
It has a story with potential. The development can be confusing, many characters that without all the notes you don't link, but I liked the background and the plot twist of the story. With a little more experience, I'm sure you'll make great stories. Thanks for your effort~
