Developed by KITT DESIGNS LTD and Dare Looks and published by KITT DESIGNS LTD, BBY DON'T HURT ME is an unusual indie title that deliberately distances itself from the conventions of traditional dating simulators. Instead of encouraging players to build ideal romantic relationships, it explores dysfunctional interactions through dark comedy, psychological exchanges, and a cast of outspoken virtual companions who rarely behave the way players might expect. The game combines elements of an interactive visual novel with a desktop companion application, allowing its animated characters to remain present even while you are using your computer for other tasks. Set against the backdrop of a dystopian world involving corrupt corporations, courier work, and underground resistance groups, the narrative embraces absurdity while maintaining an atmosphere that is equal parts humorous, unsettling, and unpredictable. One of the game's greatest strengths is its emphasis on personality. Each of the four Live2D characters has a unique appearance, voice, and attitude that shapes every conversation. Rather than relying on repetitive dialogue loops, the game features a substantial amount of voiced interactions that keep conversations feeling lively over extended sessions. The writing constantly shifts between sarcastic remarks, teasing insults, awkward humor, emotional manipulation, and occasional moments of sincerity, creating relationships that feel intentionally messy instead of idealized. This unconventional approach gives the characters memorable identities, and the quality of the voice acting helps reinforce their distinct personalities, making interactions entertaining even when they are deliberately uncomfortable. BBY DON'T HURT ME also offers more functionality than a standard visual novel. The characters act as desktop companions that remain visible outside the game's primary interface, commenting on various situations while the player continues using their computer. Voice command support introduces a practical dimension, allowing players to launch applications or websites through spoken instructions while interacting with their chosen companion. Mini-games provide additional diversions, and unlockable costumes encourage repeated playthroughs and experimentation with different dialogue paths. These features may not dramatically change the core experience, but together they create a package that feels more interactive and engaging than simply reading through conversations. A particularly impressive feature is the game's commitment to customization and community creativity. Built-in modding support allows users to import original Live2D characters, write custom dialogue, and even add their own recorded voice lines with relatively accessible tools. This opens the door for players to design personalized companions or entirely new experiences beyond the official content. For creators and hobbyists, this flexibility significantly extends the software's lifespan, as community-made additions could continue expanding the game long after the initial release. It reflects an ambitious vision that goes beyond telling a single story and instead encourages players to participate in shaping the experience. Since the game is currently in Early Access, it is important to recognize that the project is still evolving. While the available content already includes multiple animated characters, extensive voice work, and several interactive systems, the developers have made it clear that additional story content, dialogue, features, and overall polish are planned before the full launch. As a result, some areas naturally feel less complete than others, and players who prefer fully finished products may wish to wait until development is further along. Those who enjoy following a game's growth, however, will likely appreciate seeing new content and refinements arrive over time. The mature themes are another defining aspect of the experience. Although the game avoids explicit sexual content, it heavily features toxic conversations, emotional manipulation, verbal abuse, suggestive humor, and intentionally unhealthy relationship dynamics. These elements are presented as part of the game's satirical identity rather than as traditional romance, making it a title that caters to a very specific audience. Players looking for wholesome companionship or heartfelt dating simulation mechanics may find its tone off-putting, while those who appreciate unconventional storytelling and dark, self-aware humor will likely understand the creative direction the developers are pursuing. Overall, BBY DON'T HURT ME succeeds by embracing originality instead of following established genre expectations. Its combination of desktop companion mechanics, strong voice performances, animated characters, interactive features, and robust modding support creates an experience that stands apart from more conventional visual novels. Although its niche humor, intentionally abrasive character interactions, and Early Access status may not appeal to everyone, the game demonstrates a clear creative identity and enough unique ideas to leave a lasting impression. If future updates continue expanding the content while refining the overall experience, it has the potential to become a standout title for players seeking something genuinely different from the usual relationship-focused games. Rating: 7/10
For now, I have similar complains with another reviewer about voice lines. Like not enough voice lines, but I guess it's to be expected from an early access. But, my biggest issue right now is that when I open it, it becomes a chore trying to interact with Steam which usually doesn't happen with other desktop companions. Like the steam UI just freeze and I need to keep moving the window around for this to update. Another thing, I try to play a game using a controller with this companion app open, it's detecting my controller movement and moves the companion based on my controller movement. It's just a minor annoyance where I can't use this while play games using controller, but I do hope it can be fixed.
I'd like my review to be positive, but that would be simply lying to myself... So I'll start from the beginning. After reading the description of what this game is about and watching both trailers and the screenshots, I didn't understand anything. The trailer says it's "The furry desktop companion" but I don't see that anywhere. I played for almost an hour and kept having the same feeling "What am I doing here? What's going on?" The whole game feels like one small bundle of mini-games. The character keeps repeating the same lines over and over because there aren't many of them, and you keep wondering what else you can do, only to quickly realize that there really isn't much you can do. Each character has their own mini-game, which will probably get boring after a short while. This only reinforces the feeling that nothing here really fits together. It feels like someone wanted to make a game but didn't really know what they wanted it to be, so random ideas were thrown in whenever someone came up with something. Anyway, I'll stop complaining and move on to what I liked. I like the music, it's fine, even good. There are a few tracks that caught my attention, but I hope there will be more of them and that they'll be a bit more energetic. I also liked the visual style, it strongly resembles Beat Banger, which I'm a fan of. As for the characters, I like their designs, but it would be nice if they were more diverse. They're all muscular, which makes them blend together a bit and gives the impression that they're too similar to one another. Finally, I'd like to apologize for being so negative. I don't want to offend anyone, I just want the game to find its footing and finally choose a clear direction instead of wandering blindly through a maze. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this project and hope it turns into something really good. For now, I can only recommend this game to people who are genuinely curious about it, and even then, it's better to buy it on sale.
JTwusky told me he wouldnt synthesize drugs for me 10/10
thanks you to my good friend for gifting this to me, now i mist say that the game play is confusing. idk what to fully do as i wasnt given any sort of intro to the game. i just jumped in. its ok i guess i just dont know how to play it
To nie jest NIC czego oczekiwałem. Było to tak spoko promowane a tu nagle, 5 tekstów na krzyż które się powtarzają. To nie jest desktop companion to jest PNG które ma zapętlone teksty i do tego nudne w *uj. Mogę porównać tą grę do Cookie Clikera ALE jakąś wersję 1.0. Czyli praktycznie nic. Mega dno
