About
Prepare for a strategic showdown in Battle of the Bookworms, a captivating 2D strategy game where every decision counts!
Assemble your forces by purchasing diverse units, unlock game-changing power-ups, and unleash devastating age-specific abilities. Advance through the ages, as you strive to crush your opponent's home base and achieve glorious victory!
No two battles are the same! Adapt your strategies on the fly to outwit a wide array of opponents in thrilling single-player matches, or test your mettle against friends exhilarating multiplayer matches.
A Note from the Developer: Battle of the Bookworms is a passion project, brought to life by a single creator. Every pixel of art, every note of music, and every line of code has been meticulously crafted. Your feedback is invaluable and deeply appreciated as I continue to grow and evolve!
Every unit in your arsenal possesses a distinct set of strengths, weaknesses, and a unique gold cost, making them the cornerstone of your strategic deployment. Without units you won't be able to damage and destroy the enemy home base and achieve victory.
Some units excel at ranged combat, peppering foes from afar, while others have increased movement speed, allowing for rapid assaults, or a slower but more powerful tank on the field. Embrace the diversity, for no two units are alike, offering a rich tactical landscape to explore and master!

Dive into the thrill of the unexpected! In each match, your shop presents a randomized selection of units, ensuring no two battles feel the same.
While you might not always find exactly what you need immediately, don't despair! You have the power to refresh your shop for a small price giving you a completely new lineup of units. Just keep in mind that this convenient option comes with a strategic cost, so choose wisely!

Feeling the pressure and watching your match slip away? Don't despair! Power-ups are your secret weapon, ready to swoop in and potentially flip the script entirely!
These aren't just temporary boosts; they're passive unlocks that weave themselves into your gameplay as the match progresses. Almost every action you take fuels your journey towards the next power-up. Whether your home base is enduring enemy onslaughts, your units are dishing out damage, or you're simply just activating your age ability, each of these actions contributes to your power-up progress.
Interestingly, you'll find that the losing side often earns progress towards their next power-up at an accelerated rate. For instance, when your home base takes damage, it acts as a catalyst for faster advancement. This creates a fascinating strategic dilemma: lean into the risk of being defensive to gain power-ups faster, potentially staging a dramatic comeback, or play it safe and risk falling behind? It's a high-stakes gamble, but the rewards could be monumental!

Are you out of gold or struggling against your opponent's forces? This is precisely when your Age Ability shines!
Age Abilities are devastating, randomized attacks that sweep across the battlefield, decimating your foes. They are exceptionally effective against powerful enemy units (provided luck is on your side!) and overwhelming swarms of units alike.
While these potent abilities come with no upfront cost, remember that they require a crucial cooldown period before they can be unleashed again.
Therefore, wield this power with strategic precision – use it wisely!

This game definitely has a lot of quirks and room for improvement, but a lot of charm also. I beat all three modes available so far in about 30 minutes, and the only one that really gave me a challenge was the hard mode. The gold production is so slow at the start that it's hard to actually upgrade your troops in the first two difficulties, you can whoop the other worms butts in like three minutes by just spamming worms until you get the archmage. The hard difficulty showed a lot of promise, I actually had a back and force going with the CPU as it spawned more units and more powerful ones too. The more you battle the faster you get power ups and so far the only one I've found useful besides the base repair while you're under attack is the gold production. If you get two or three of them you actually have a chance of getting the troop upgrade ability, which costs an agonizing 250 gold, but it was totally worth it. Your troops become more expensive but way more powerful and get cool outfits. I love simplistic games like this with hand drawn art which is why I bought it, and why I'm giving it a positive review despite there are some flaws. I would absolutely 100% suggest that the creator add mouse support. You can only move around the menu and spawn units with the arrow keys and space bar, when it would be wayyyy more convenient to just click whatever you want and it's sometimes hard to tell which worm you have selected when you're going fast. I feel like Dexter playing Halo with both hands on the keyboard. The multiplayer seems like it would be totally awesome and actually be a really even match, but I doubt I'm going to be able to experience it unless one of my friends wants to buy this game. I'll for surer be checking back on this game once the nightmare difficulty has been added and maybe there's even more upgrades for the worms. I'll leave comments on, if anyone buys this and enjoys it enough to try the multiplayer, let me know.
