Nice relaxing historical game
Love nostalgic baseball games. This is the one for you!
A nice, accessible baseball sim. Not as deep as something like OOTP, but not as overwhelming either. This one hits the sweet spot for complexity for me.
If you like a team that commits more errors than runs scored, or if you like a team that thinks double play are two kids playing in the park, then this your game.
Two words Don't buy!
This (2015 version) is the classic Baseball Mogul before the designer "improved" the game. Steam doesn't carry Baseball Mogul past the 2019 update. The 2015 version is well-suited for playing historical seasons and/or for customizing your team. The downside of older versions of Baseball Mogul is that individual player stats differ somewhat from the player's actual stats for each season. If that's a problem for you, try another game. I believe Baseball Mogul has addressed this issue in their current version.
Do yourself a favor and get Out of the Park Baseball. BM2015 is a baseball management sim where you take on the role of GM and play through multiple seasons building your roster through trades, draft and free agency. If you're looking for positives for this one then it's that it is far more friendly to new users and those looking for a more streamlined experience, due to its far more limited features and rosters. It's not that it is a bad game, it's just that there is another series that does it all better.
I played earlier versions of baseball mogul as a kid. I still remember having occasional half-days at school and having to go with my father to work and they would let me use an unused computer in the office and I got to play Baseball Mogul on it. It must have been the 2008 version, but since then I was hooked. Baseball Mogul 2015 is basically the same game, just as good, but more recent. It is an incredible game for those who like the strategy side of baseball. Strongly recommend!
The Baseball Mogul games aren't perfect sims, but they are awfully good. You're not getting a great graphics experience -- you're getting spreadsheets. Numbers upon numbers. For people who just like to go to the ballpark and see home runs, it's probably not a great game. For fans who can't miss Immaculate Grid and know how many times Bob Gibson was pinch-hit for in 1968, it's the best sim going. What's bad: - Some marginal players are drastically overvalued. Jeff Reed was never that good. - AI is trade-happy. Star players get traded far too frequently, and teams frequently make 8-10 player deals, sometimes more than once a season. - AI controlled rosters and lineups often don't make sense. - In play-by-play mode, AI catchers are way too hard to run on, and Player controlled catchers give up steals to slow runners like its their job. - Some players skills are entirely unrealistic. In 5-season sims, Randy Johnson has never struck out more than 5 players in a game, and rarely records more than 1 or 2, despite routinely throwing 98-100 mph. What's good: - Despite my quibbles, it's still the best MLB sim I've played, going back to Sherco, APBA, and Strat-o-Matic. - Customizing ballparks, while a bit of a chore, is a great feature - The economic end of the game, while a little simplistic, makes running a team in a small market incredibly challenging. What I wish was different: - I'd prefer players entered the draft consistent with their real-life ages, rather than everyone being drafted out of HS. I've tried, repeatedly, to change the settings to correct, but I've been unable to fix it. - Fewer trades, but more trade flexibility -- being able to trade draft picks, for instance. - More realistic disabled list.
damn this is harder than I thought... custom's a real struggle, but I like it
