Oof. I'm in the perfect target demographic for this game. I surf nearly every day, love action sports, video games, and have put many hours into Kelly Slater Pro Surfer as a kid. Unfortunately this game misses the mark for me. Lets start with some positives: the surfing and physics do feel good. I think they did an ok job at translating the physics. If this game had been the core of KSPS with some updated physics, I'm all in. The downside, however, is how much they focused on the competitive WSL aspect of surfing. They tried to go for a more "sim" experience with the surfing, even tho the physics don't lend themselves anywhere close to something "realistic". This means that EVERYTHING is simulated, right down to paddling back out. I don't mind the concept of the waves ending, having different sections, getting to learn the different breaks. HOWEVER, why the devs thought that they should force you to paddle back out after every wave is completely braindead. I don't have hours and hours of time to play. I wanna be able to pick up these games for 15-20mins at a time and ride a few waves, flow, practice, etc. The game gatekeeps you from riding waves by making you spend even longer paddling back out or riding the clunkiest jetski known to man back into the lineup. If i wanna spend time waiting around for waves and paddling I'm just gonna surf for real. A good comparison is to Shredders. Shredders is a snowboarding game made by a small team. In shredders there's a very easy respawn button that you can practice the same feature over and over in, making it much faster to learn the controls and be precise. This time gating riding waves makes it hard to learn the controls, bc every wave you fall on you gotta spend another minute paddling back to the peak. Is it like real life? Yes, but I'm not trying to spend hours in the game only to be able to actually practice half the time. So until they add some kinda arcade mode where you don't have to paddle or have an infinite wave, I'm going to have to refund and wait for a sale. There's no way I can justify paying $50 for this game when both Sunny Garcia Surfing and KSPS exist and are easier to emulate. Shredders, as previously mentioned, is only $30 and seems to offer more content. And one final thing, I was mainly hoping to play this game on the steamdeck, which it does run on. However at a 40fps cap the game was still consuming 20w, which kills the battery way too fast compared to the emulated ps2 games. Some more performance options would be really nice to get the wattage down. To the devs: you've got a great foundation here, but it needed another 6mo-1year in the oven before you could call this a true release. I'll be watching and will pick it up when it feels more fleshed out, but the value isn't there unfortunately
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- ANALYSIS OF A WEEKEND SURFER WHO FINISHED THE GAME: (ENGLISH VERSION) STRENGTHS: 1) Customization of boards: you can choose from decks, color, width, volume and even shape of the nose and tail. You can create a fish, a gun, a classic longboard, a progressive longboard and any shape you imagine for a board; 2) Character customization: you can customize the character you can control, unfortunately they didn't include the option to apply tattoos to them; 3) A good variety of scenarios, if I'm not mistaken there are about 11, but they are only released if you complete the WCT (World Championship Tour); 4) It is possible to develop strategies used by surfers in the WCT such as marking and using priority to force a penalty from the rival; 5) The game has a good variety of situational changes in the waves, they can be Without tube/slow, with slow tubes and with fast tubes. In addition, there are left, right and opening waves for both sides. And the sea can be smooth, irregular and disturbed. The tide can be low, medium or high. Combining these factors there will be different wave formats. NEGATIVE POINTS: 1) Although the game allows you to create a longboard, there are no classic longboard maneuvers such as Hanging ten and hanging five; 2) The selection of peaks was good, but it was missing TEAHUPOO!!! It would be better to take out Jaws or Aileens and put in Teahupoo! Since neither Jaws nor Aileens are part of the WCT and are not typical WCT locations; 3) Even when the tubes are fast they are very slow; 4) The "lip" and "Impact zone" of the tube wave do not knock the surfer down, it is as if they were ghostly; 5) There should be more spots that were not on the tour but that were used for parallel championships such as WQS and Big Wave championships. Suggestions for new spots: Fernando de Noronha-BR, Padangpadang-IN, Uluwatu-IN, Nazaré-PT, Mavericks-US and other peaks in the Mentawais, Morocco or Maldives; 6) Surfers get tired and get injured very quickly, you have to spend all the time giving them treatments and massages. That is all!
It's ugly, but enjoyable, but the 50 euro price tag is pure ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
I hate to say no for this game because i see a lot of potential. The only thing is graphics and game play wise it is not as up to date for the amount of money they are charging for the experience. That is just my opinion though a believe the game has lot of potential and like what they are trying to do.
No in-game graphics setup, the devs said they'd fix it over a year ago, they don't give a damn. I can't even try the game. I feel like a 1998, it's ugly but I wouldn't mind if the gameplay had been good. The game is incredibly greedy, my PC is heating up 2 minutes after launch while still in the menu. The price, ok, you are Australians but no.... It's too expensive. Too bad, still no good surf game on steam. [h1] If you like sports games, come and discover what's available on steam.
Best surf game since Kelly Slater Pro Surfer! It takes a while to get used to but once you do you'll have tons of fun. It takes more of a realistic approach rather than the arcade approach in KSPS, however it actually scores you based on where you are on the wave. I highly recommend this game to someone who surfs and wants to sit back and chill when the waves are flat. As for running the game it takes a bit of a beefy computer if you want to run in 2k or 4k over 60 fps but the graphics are beautiful. I have bought many other games on steam looking for a good surf simulator and this is by far the best one i have found.
i love this game but imagine if you could co op. surfing with friends would be so goood
Shoddy console port that demands you use a controller then fails to render properly on standard PC monitor resolutions. Game developers have stated that they no intention of fixing this. But you can tell they don't care about their customers, the game plays asinine elevator music on startup despite music being turned off in the options.
