Bargalian Regicide

I would make this review average if I could. Definitely not made for me I can tell. I think the combat is insanely simple and uninteresting. I like the callback to old 2000s games, I just couldn't get engaged with this. There is nothing to explore as well, just a big map for each level. What elevates this for me is the unique atmosphere, and I can tell for niche set of people, this game would really click.

Ambitious and janky — now with hats. This hits the same spot that Metal Garden did for me last year. It looks and plays way worse than Metal Garden, but the desolate and alien vibes are on point. It's AU$2.95 but I'd pay more for it. Not a whole lot more, adding platforming in a game that controls this bad and not including even a drop shadow is a war crime, but AU$5 is fair. I made up the difference by gifting it to a friend as well as buying my own copy. Should [b]you[/b] buy it? I think you should. It's an utterly unique little game which offers more than it probably should. The locations are uncanny and weirdly beautiful, there's some good music and did I mention hats.

But unfortunately Valve's lack of quality control just makes the store really bothersome to explore. Now we have, standardized engines, paid assets, game templates, Unity alone is responsible for the vast majority of games on steam. It didn't kill euro/slav jank per se. Case and point, Bargalian Regicide made on Godot. It just makes it a pain to find. Soon enough you won't even distinguish AI art from real art. [h3] Bargalian Regicide [/h3] well, the game does have combat and platforming. In reality, its mostly atmosphere and vibes. It has a surreal feel to it, the story and characters are strange, it has a similarly muddy colour palette to the original release of Pathologic. I find it intriguing because it uses its limitations to create a constant feeling of unease. Somewhere in between almost being a game and a dream like experience. Rather than me having to describe what this is in terms of: music, animations, attack patterns, combat choices. I think for 2 bucks you might as well see it for yourself With the caveat, that despite my comparison to Zeno Clash, this does not have a fully fledged combat aspect to it, in a general sense. Like, one is a bizarre game with a very clear brawler type combat, and the other is...well, a set of ideas that put together, kinda work, but serve more purpose in leaving a feel of uneasiness in the player than they do at resembling a game. they're definitely lifted from other games, i just never seen them implemented like that. The RNG critical Hit Chance, the directional attacks. For sure had never seen enemies shooting arrows like that. And the wizards?! holy hell !

surprisingly fun game

This game is a cryptid. I played it two weeks ago and I still think about it. Its a short 2-3 hour experience but oh what an experience it is. Everything has the half familiar, semi real feeling to it like a dream. It defies game design wisdom yet it reminds the player of a time when games, 3D games especially, were alot less refined. When they were just figuring things out. In a way it feels like the creator themselves is figuring things out. They have an eye for stunning visuals and voice in their writing, but its not the most consistent. I think this is most evident in the writing. Some is very flowery and poetic whereas some is very blunt and casual. This is very promising work from a solo dev and Ill be watching their future projects as much as I can. Unfortunately much like their game the creator themselves seems to be a cryptid.
