«Balls and Magnets»

Balls and Magnets: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Have you ever played a mechanical maze game? You know what I mean, those mazes that have been carved within a wooden block that contain one or more balls. There are two different types of gameplay and they are extremely simple. In some, you have to move a ball through the maze from point A to point B while avoiding holes. The other one is to make sure your ball (s) reach the hole in the middle of the maze while moving your hands ever so slightly up, down, left and right. Now, let’s replace the hand movements with magnets; some that pull your balls towards you and others that push them away. And yes, you need to make sure that a certain number of balls go through a dedicated opening to win. And to make it even more fun, they removed the side partitions so your marbles can fall into the abyss. Fun, hey?! Let’s have a game of Ball and Magnets! Ball and Magnets is a puzzle game where you have to make sure a certain number of balls fall through a hole in order to clear each of the levels. There are 50 levels to clear in this game. Each of the levels is made with a combination of geometrical shapes (square, rectangle, triangle etc). The hole will always be in the middle of a square which can vary in size depending on the level. As I mentioned above, there are no retaining structures around the shapes so you need to be careful how you use the magnets to direct the balls into the hole. As for the number of balls, it varies between 8 to 14; the good news is that they will be static at the beginning of most stages. Here come the magnets! The blues ones pull the spheres towards them and the red will push them in the opposite direction. Remember, there is no retaining structure around the shapes and you may frequently lose your balls! Magnets can be positioned either above a shape, outside the shape or on the shape to make it slightly more difficult to clear a level. It’s all about the pressure of touch in this game; if you press on the blue magnet for a certain time, it will drag the balls quicker and stronger towards it than if you tap them lightly. Same thing with the red magnets. For the first nine stages, you have to get between two to three balls in the hole, and towards the end up to 9 balls, which can be tricky in some occasions. The graphics are nice and simple and the soundtrack is very soothing. I would have liked to have a level editor which would give the consumer more re-playability. Also a leader board, because if you manage to get the correct number of balls in the hole, regardless of whether you have another 2 balls to manage, your level will automatically end. The other downside is that you’ll finish the game within an hour and a half. Positives: ~~~~~~~ + Nice graphics and smoothing soundtrack + The physics are pretty goods + 50 levels to complete + Stacks of achievements Negatives: ~~~~~~~~ - No level editor - No leader board - Short game - No trading cards as yet Balls and Magnets is an enjoyable puzzle game to pass the time. 6/10 Key provided by developer/publisher for review purposes.
overall very good. I recommend it. 50 good levels. the price of the game is alright.
small funny puzzle game where you operate the balls with a magnets - either push them or pull them. your goal is certain number of balls should fall through a hole. Everything seems to be easy, huh? But the ball just do no obey you! And this is makes fun :)
Minimalist physics puzzle game. Fans of the genre should take a look. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chTG6LocYVw
An oddly satisfying little game. It takes a while to get used to the subtleties of the physics (in some ways the "magnets" behave more like fans) but once you get the hang of it it all becomes quite fluid. Only a handful of levels are likely to cause any short-term frustration, otherwise it's a relaxing little brain-teaser. Nothing too challenging and not much in the way of longevity of repeatability, but if you like chill-out puzzlers it might provide an hour or two of zen-like focus for the price of a bag of chips.
Pros: + It starts up, showing that it's not a complete rip off. + The asking price is less than $1,000,000 + Playing this game won't kill you. Cons: - This game exists. - It costs more than $0.00 - Playing this game won't kill you.
Review
If you have ever played a physics puzzle game, especially the awful kind found in flash/android games, then you have played this game. It's the very embodiment of a physics puzzle game. If you do not enjoy physics puzzle games, you need to avoid this game like the plague, as it will give you cancer, and the cancer will force you to draw gravity-affected lines to roll a ball into a bucket for all of eternity. This game is ridiculously boring, bland, dull, and thoroughly unpleasant to play, even for a "physics puzzle" game, which, granted, is a genre I dislike in general, but this game...ugh. Imagine all of the absolute worst aspects of physics puzzle games you've played on Newgrounds / Google Play, and dial it up to 11. Oh, you'll be sitting there fighting with the controls and the garbage physics engine well past the limit of your patience. You play the game by clicking on the magnets (the transparent floating blue cubes) to attract nearby balls. With the mouse. Do I need to say more? How about the fact that if you slide the cursor off while holding the mouse button, the magnet will deactivate? Or how about the fact that the magnets give zero feed back for when they are or aren't active? This game is so infuriatingly bad, my wallet is so sad, and I am so mad, that I've actually passed on other games by the developer, because I see the same colorscheme and font for the other games' promo material, and this game has already formed a bad first impression in my mind, such that I am weary of it and expect a horrible game. Maybe the other games are way better. I'll never know, because the copy/paste design philosophy tells me that the art isn't the only thing the dev copied and pasted. Don't buy this. Not for the $2 asking price. Not on sale. Not even if it was released for free. I did, and now I'm stuck with this game cause I waited longer than two weeks to play it. ♥♥♥♥ me, right? Anyways, since I'm stuck with the game now, I might as well see it through to the end, as much as the thought makes my stomach hurt. I'll be damned if I don't get my money's worth. Who knows, maybe I'll magically grasp the "subtleties" of this game and start to enjoy it. I mean it's practically a 0% chance of happening, but we can dream, can't we? After all, I want to like this game.
Update
Unfortunately, after mustering up the will to finish this game, I didn't grasp the "subtleties" of this game--as there were none--and I didn't enjoy it. It took me 3 hours in-game and 2 MONTHS (look at the post and update dates) real-time, over 10+ sessions to beat the mere 50 levels this game has to offer. This alone should speak volumes about how dreadful this game is, and how reluctant I was to play it. This game is a chore. But I finished it. Despite losing my patience and having to spread said 3 hours over said 2 months out of sheer reluctance. Despite the achievement spamming. Despite the unreasonably low framerate. Despite the horrible in-game mouse cursor. Despite said low framerate exasperating said horrible cursor making it even more horrible. Despite the sluggish, unrealistic and inconsistent physics simulation. Despite having to fight with the physics simulation. Despite the subpar level design. Despite the unresponsive developer. Despite the python. Despite the boredom. Despite my utter hatred of every single minute of playing this game. Despite all of that, I managed to masochist my way through all 50 levels. And after beating this horrid game, I can finally conclude, without a doubt, that this is one of the worst games I have ever played. Worse than To The Moon. Much worse. Despite everything I hate about TTM, the game is at least playable.
