There's something deeply therapeutic about being able to cross up a zombie, shoot it in the face, then double jump and launch an explosive three pointer that takes out 20 other zombies. Peak
Ball & Gun review Ball & Gun -- a Sports/FPS roguelike. It doesn't reinvent the wheel for either Sports or FPS games because it doesn't have to. What's here is something new made with familiar pieces. I first played this in the web-based Alpha, so I jumped at the chance to see what's new in Early Access. I'd thought it was mostly polish until around ~1hour into my playthrough, when it surprised me with a level progression system. There's more to sink your teeth into here than meets the eye. Pros - The two ideas ("Ball" and "Gun") are blended beautifully -- they feel like they belong together. - The game handles great on both controller and mouse+keyboard. Aim assist is granted tastefully; skill is still required. - Responsive visual FX make it feel good to do something good. Strong "juice", as they say in game design. - Wide variety of abilities and weapons along the two paths ("Ball" and "Gun"). I found the skill-based Ball skills to feel the most rewarding to pull off. Cons If you're thinking about buying this, be aware you're buying an Early Access game. - The weapon balance could be polished more -- most guns don't make a strong case to switch off the 1-2 "kill all zombies instantly" inclusions. - Enemies NEED to be fleshed out more -- there's currently 1 type of zombie with varying HP and speed (but only one attack power?). - Roguelike mechanics are implemented strangely. Progression for the first court carries across runs but resets when dying on later levels. - Overall, more could be done to make the game's "obstacles" feel more like real threats. I believe Ball & Gun has a very exciting premise. Based on the Early Access notes, I have reason to believe that the points I raised will be addressed in future updates. So I'm excited to see where they go with this and recommend it for any and everyone who finds the title interesting.
