IGF FINALIST 2013 BAFTA WINNER 2012 TIGA AWARD FINALIST 2012 1. Build Hotel. 2. Make Music. 3. Stop Tadstock. An insane hybrid of a tower defense game and a procedural music toy with tons of bullets (and healthy number of Wu-Tang references and credit crunch satire). The hit game for iOS now available on Windows and Mac!
Bad Hotel
Checking out Despite Bad Hotel being a BAFTA winning game, something I struggle to see as to why the British Academy of Film and Television Arts would award it anything because outside of the frustrating core gameplay loop neither the art nor music is anything I would hand out awards too. What boggles the mind even further was that it also went onto be a IGF finalist and TIGA award finalist for 2012/2013. What the hell were all these award groups seeing that I can't? Playing the game in full screen, the mouse cursor completely disappears and in a game such as this (Tower Defence), where things quickly get hectic and out of hand, not being able to see your cursor so that you can select ability tiles to lay down before your hotel is blow to smithereens is a deal breaker. The game also generates money at such a snail's pace, money you will urgently need to buy ability tiles such as cannons or healing which you will need to use to defend or repair your hotel from the coming onslaught. These tiles get progressively more and more ridiculously expensive the further you advance in the game and the pace at which the hotel gets attacked is relentless so much so that the money generating system simply cannot keep up and it ends up becoming one giant, frustrating mess. There is a fun time-waster somewhere in here but in its current form most of the gameplay mechanics simply suck the fun right out of the game. If you are a bit of a masochist then give it a try, most are better off just giving it a wide berth.
Bad Hotel? More like bad game
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1203026956 1.
Bad Hotel = Bad Game
Einfach Finger weg! Hat dir das Review weitergeholfen? Dann folge mir doch in meiner Steamgruppe, wo ich meine Reviews als Kurator verfasse.
Was randomly talking about this to a friend, came to the store page and saw the negative reviews. This is by no means a bad game and I have no idea why everyone is so upset with it. Yes it is simple, and it is fairly short. The idea is neat, and having an optimal strategy is very difficult. I used to compete on the leaderboards before it got hacked to hell. Get it on sale, but don't believe all these negative reviews.
Why did I 100% this game? I blame depression and self-loathing. Plus it's super short. This game is a nightmare of ear and eye r*ping proportions. The gameplay loop is decent, but the visuals and "music" are distracting and terrible. I originally just wanted to run the game to get the trading cards, but I decided to give it a shot. I'm glad it's over, and I'm not sure it was worth the trouble.
3/10
commits the two worst sins in gaming: - it's boring - it's confusing
Bad Hotel is very much a mobile game, being a short amusing distraction, but not much more than that. The game's greatest strength is in its art, but everything else leaves more to be desired. In particular, the game is more of a puzzle than a proper tower defense, as a limited and predetermined set of tools prevents the player from exploring any interesting strategies.
I like the general ethos and idea of this, but the execution misses something, feels a bit rushed, at least for the PC release. Probably optimized for casual players on portable initially, Bad Hotel starts strong, but it's weaknesses are in -weird difficulty curve (suddenly, a level will become almost impossible), -not great windows compatibility (restarting a level almost always resulted in surprising behaviour and/or crashing), and -poor explanation of game behaviour. I got to the third set of levels and not once did the game explain - either by way of gameplay or explicit explanation - what the exploding rooms were meant for. I can't even find an explanation online. The difficulty curve is worked-around, but not fixed, by allowing players to basically skip whole sections of the game. Unfortunately this leaves the player without a sense of progression.
First of all don't take my word for it, read some of the professional reviews and whatnot. It's a good game, even in 2024. I just picked it up and finished it (had gotten halfway through, when I first got it on sale). It's a solid tower defense game that [s]encourages[/s] .. Forces you to bend and adapt your defense strategies as you make your way through the levels. In each level you balance your income with your firepower with your ... survivability? And yes, it's hectic at times, this isn't the type of game where you get to pause and ponder, rather give it a few whirls and after getting your hotel destroyed by your landlord a few times you start to get the jist of it.
