I've been playing offline, so I have about double the amount of playtime than the time on record. My judgment after having played about eight hours is: a mixed bag with more good than bad, but the bad really frustrates the player experience and needs addressed. Once you get a hang of batting and the new slide mechanic, that side of the plate is fun. The spirit of '97 is retained and seeing the backyard kids again feels like a real homecoming. Good job on that, Mega Cat! Pitching is not frustrating, but also not optimal. The game teaches you to never throw a strike, because the computer AI will hit all strikes exactly where your defenders are not, and if you throw borderline pitches/balls exclusively, the computer will swing at them, sometimes hitting and sometimes missing. While you can certainly win this way, it's really not fun to play a baseball game where you deliberately avoid the strike zone with every pitch. It makes pitching quite tedious. Now the really bad: fielding is deeply frustrating. If the computer hits the ball into your outfield, may the Lord help you, because your outfielders won't. Numerous runs are given up every game on routine plays, outfield and infield, because your team's AI collides clunkily with your inputs, which means what you want to happen generally does not happen. I'm worried that this is an engine-level problem that cannot really be fixed. It seems there is too much extraneous animation and buffering to make things run smoothly, which is a setback from the '97 and 2001 games. At the same time, maybe it can be fixed, because the computer AI is nearly totally efficient on defense. They will always be in the right position, will always throw to the right base, will turn double plays, and make diving catches, all while you're just cursing when the opponent AI routinely outruns your throw on routine grounders. The gap between their efficiency and your computer players' Bad News Bears style fielding is more frustrating than if both sides equally sucked. All things said, I still recommend the game, because everyone involved in this project deserves credit for having revived the Backyard Sports franchise. It could easily have disappeared forever, which would have made me sad. But fielding makes me angry, so please fix that.
I mean its like the og but Im kinda sad that they didnt get randy johnson in this game but it is a lot more fun with the new power ups and new modes and unlocking stuff
