Reviews
Alright. Back to Home is a game I played right around its release and curated it back then, but I didn't actually write a full review until now. Mostly because, much like another reviewer who posted a review today, I was chewing on just how critical I should be when dealing with a game made by an alleged child developer. But, given the experience while playing this shared by a mutual friend of the aforementioned other reviewer and myself, I thought it time to remedy my not having reviewed it. Plus, I also do want to talk about how misleading it is to claim the game was made by a 14 year old developer anyway. My experience with the game was that while cute and all, it had no sort of quality control, be it early access or simply being playtested by more than a couple people. And that shows almost immediately, and regularly. For one, if you explore, which the game kind of encourages you to do, it is possible to go out of bounds, so to speak. When you do so, it disables the normal controls and you basically just slowly float around. You can move the cat, but for some reason, the controls all invert during those moments, and of course, as mentioned, all you can do is slowly float and hope to get out of these areas. Which include the deer pen and many many of the boulders. Although it is also possible to get stuck on cracks while trying to get off a boulder, which requires a restart, which sends you back to the beginning, lol. I also fell through the world when I entered the lake behind one of the cabins in the first area, which I assume should not be happening. Additionally, many of the assets on the perimeter of the game aren't placed properly. As a result, the cameras will often get stuck in the cliffs and such. Or you will walk into the rock face for a few feet. Things like that. There is a puzzle wherein you eventually trigger the appearance of an apparition. For me, that puzzle was broken. Once I tried leaving the area, it booted me back to the beginning of the game. Beyond all the bugs, many of which I'm probably forgetting, the actual logic behind some of these puzzles seems kind of broken. Requiring you to go back and turn off lights you no longer need because the game only recognizes three total lights being on at any moment, for example. The controls in general are also wonky, and your cat, especially when jumping, just feels awkward to control, and there is some weird slow down when jumping to where it seems more like you are floating through the air. The game does look nice overall, and the addition of music was solid. What really should have happened is this game from a first time developer who markets themselves on the product page as a "14 year old" should have been released as a free to play title. I don't see much in the way of the kid fixing any of the few already reported issues and I can't imagine he wasn't aware of them before deciding to release the game. Especially since according to the developer, the game was in development for four years. Which is in and of itself hard to imagine given the simplicity of the game. I also want to talk about this claim of being 14 years old. I am confident that five or even ten years from now, the description on the product page will remain unchanged. And when a person looks at the page and are considering buying this game, they're going to think they're supporting a kid developer no matter how long the game has actually been on Steam. Whether or not it was made by a teen however, once he and his dad decided to charge for the game, they lost any ability to hang their hat on the kid's age if the game does not live up to the sort of standards a paying customer might expect. Which it does not. Is this a game that shows some promise made by a developer who can use it as a learning experience? Yes. But you learn nothing if people aren't honest about the experience. And I think that is really the crux of this review and this game. As a free to play title, this would have been passable. As a paid title, it is not and should not have been released in the state it was and still is in. My advice to the dev would be to make it free to play, which will encourage more people to try it out, and then actually be active and communicative as you receive both positive and negative feedback from people trying it out. Take all that and allow it to shape future endeavors. When i was Young, i was a passionate Gamer (I still am). Playing hour after hour, diving into new Worlds, forgetting about Problems, just a short Time. I was always dreaming of making my own Game but in that Times we didn´t have the Tools for it. So, it stayed a Dream, because later, there wasn´t time for it because i went to Storywriting. Today it is much easier. And here we are. This is the first Game of a young Gamer, who made his Dream come true. Welcome to BACK TO HOME! BACK TO HOME is telling the Story of a Cat wanting to get Home. Beeing taken away from her owner, the Cat goes on a short but nice Journey. Guide the Cat trough different very nice Areas. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3287658652 BACK TO HOME is an Animal Plattformer with little Puzzle Elements and a nice little Story. It reminds me of THE LAST TREE. On your Way you will find Radios that will tell you from your Past. A short but touching Story. Find also out about the Light that guides you. Try to reach the End of your Journey. BACK TO HOME has very nice Graphics showing a beautifull World. The Levels are linear but there is much to discover. There is also a really amazing Soundtrack that fits in perfectly. Very nice done. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3287658827 Your Cat can walk, run and jump. The Animation is fluid but a little bit slow and the Cat looks a little bit like a Plush Cat but cute. I like it, because it is something new after all the Cats i saw in so many other Games. The whole Game is very relaxing and i took my time to explore the different Areas. The Plattforms are not that Hard, but sometimes the Cat feels a little bit clunky and a little bit slow. But i did it. Yes, the Game has Bugs, but not Gamebreaking. I reported a few and the Developer removed them fast. Thanks for it. :-) https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3287659403 So, what can i say? BACK TO HOME is a very nice Game and i enjoyed every Moment with it. It is not perfect, it really isn´t, but thats okay. Keep in Mind that this is the First Game of a Young 15 Year old Developer. I have the greatest Respect for what he created here in his free Time. He had the Tools i didn´t have many Years before and made his Dream come true. Thanks for that nice Experience and i wish you all the best for your next Games. So, dear Reader, if you like Games like THE LAST TREE, then this is for you. Thank you for reading. :-)
You like this Review? You want more? Visit and follow our AWG Curator! You`re always welcome. Back To Home is a short but beautiful adventure where you play as a cat traversing different worlds to find a way back home.
The Story
You play as a cat who is trying to find their way home as they traverse different worlds such as a night world, a forest and a desert. You will discover unique stone structures as you travel that will uncover memories when you find them.
Gameplay & Features
Gameplay is just you as a cat running around in various worlds exploring but not really interacting with much outside of the odd item here and there that will trigger a memory. There are some puzzles to solve but mainly in this game you are just travelling around. As for settings there is very little to offer, you can set your fps limit and language. For graphics settings you hit a scroll down menu that offers very low up to ultra settings but no options within those settings to adjust anything. There is also no way to edit the key bindings. The game is played completely using the keyboard with some minimal mouse control on the main menu for selecting some options. The game does support controller but I used my keyboard for my play-though. There are no save options. The game will save automatically and you can only have one game profile at a time so if you want to restart it will override the existing save.
Things to note…
* Do not jump into water (you cannot swim) * You cannot die and jumping from high up causes no damage. * This game will cut off at the top & bottom on ultra wide screen monitors. (Hit alt +enter for windowed mode and dragged the corners to resize) * Once you enter into a new world you cannot go back to the one you came from. * The jumping in this game seems sluggish with not enough height or range. I often fell off of things like jumping rock to rock. Just make sure you have a running start before closing any distances.
Suggestions for the Developer
🌟 One thing I would recommend the developer do since you can get stuck easily in this game is put an option on the start menu (once hitting ESC) that has a reset button that puts you back at the last checkpoint. As of right now you have to quit the game and restart.
The Visuals & Audio
Visually the game can have some gorgeous moments, especially in the night world. There is a lot of clipping in the game and pop-ins but it did not dull my own personal experience. But it is noticeable enough to mention. The soundtrack is gorgeous. That is where a lot of this game shines. Running around the world, the music adds so much to the atmosphere. Haunting melodies with ambient sounds such as birds chirping, the wind blowing and the fire crackling. The only downside to the music is it will cut off suddenly in the world (I noticed this is the night world) and then all that is left for the majority of your time in that world is the ambient sounds.
Overall Experience
Overall a pretty impressive first game by Teo Georgiev. I had an enjoyable experience overall but having some display options and detailed graphical settings would have been nice. The game does clip often and has visual glitching and pop-ins. But there are some beautiful scenes for sure in this game when everything comes together. I would recommend this game (with the knowledge of the things I pointed out in my Things to note section before jumping in. ✨
When Otome Lovers encounters The Butterfly Effects, it's a blend of enchanting love stories and the magical ripples of fate! 💜This game was gifted to Catizens Curations for review. I really wanted to give this game a recommended review, but sadly, I had so many issues with it that I just can't. I'll start with the positive though, as my experience with the game wasn't all bad. Back To Home is your average walking simulator type of game, with some platforming mixed in there. The graphics were decent, but the cat looked a little sick (especially when looking from the front lol). The soundtrack was lovely and It was easy to complete, in theory. Truth however, was that I was more often than not, stuck in some hole that was left by the developer who had put down the 3D assets of the terrain. There were many such holes that I accidentally dropped myself in, and I was unable to continue without closing the game and restarting the chapter/level. There was also one part of the game where I was able to just jump over most of the "puzzles" and skip them entirely, and getting forward to the next chapter. I feel like with a lot of hardwork and polish, this game could be a lovely little hidden gem, but to me, it currently isn't it and I felt more annoyed playing it, than satisfied and enjoyed. I wouldn't recommend getting it, as there are other better walking simulator like games out there similar to this one.
I'm sorry, but I'm going to be that person now. I decided not to say anything apart from a discussion post earlier, because I thought this game wouldn't get any attention anyway. Then I saw a Steam friend buy it and was like "oh no". Now that friend is privately warning people about the game. Her main issues were motion sickness and laptop-frying, mine are described in my discussion post. Look, for a teenage boy who's learning how to make games, this is amazing and he should absolutely be proud. And continue learning, get more honest feedback, make more games, and THEN start thinking about publishing on Steam and asking for money. The positive reviews here are not written to inform potential players, but to praise and encourage the kid. And if you want to support him, go ahead. But you should know that you can't expect this to be a standard quality game. * * * If you like chill and story-driven games, check out my curator Peaceful Adventures and Stories.
This was a very charming and heartwarming adventure. You and your work inspire me, and I thoroughly enjoyed playing your game. Be sure to continue on your path as a game developer. I loved the atmosphere, the concept, and the level design. Even though some of the levels had fairly open spaces, I could clearly understand the intended route and landmarks. The story seemed abstract to me at first, but it grew on me. The people who helped you with the music did a great job too, and you guys created a great combination. In your future projects, I would recommend paying attention to performance and control responsiveness to make them more fluid. If you have the time, also consider accessibility for different screens and controllers. There were a few issues with the borders on the Steam Deck with a 16:10 aspect ratio, and the console's gamepad behaved oddly — I had to emulate mouse and keyboard controls. I look forward to your future works with great anticipation. Thank you! p.s: found out about the game from a post on reddit, good decision for promotion 👍🏻
A beautiful game! Loved it and recommend people giving it a play. Keep up the amazing work, my gameplay is here! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqqM0fa4sU0 - PART 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-NXcYEzLwg - PART 2
If you suffer from motion sickness or other visual computer game issues, this one might get you. The collisions are funky and the camera constantly flashes meshes and objects in and out. it wasn't the worse motion sickness I have suffered even close but its there and it could be a lot worse to someone more sensitive to flashing. I'm going to have to agree with the other negative reviews. This was not ready to be released or should have been free with the developer accepting feedback. Its a decent prototype, its definitely a walking sim and we have a few vistas and some collectables to find and explore. However, what really makes me not recommend this game are two things, the story is nearly incoherent and the collisions and movement logic is awful. Walking sims can always be a bit odd in their storytelling sometimes and in the way the story is communicated isn't unusual(just small white text on screen). Ignoring the various typos, this story can't string two ideas together to form a whole. Things happened but it was like a five year old telling you about something. In between the tidbits of logic there are random noises and words and general confusion. It really needed to be looked at as a whole arc and cleaned up and done with more of a purpose. There were times where the monuments repeated and I got several in a row I had seen earlier. The collisions and movement logic are terrible. In a genre where you can have the simplest type of system ever and everyone is happier for it I'm not sure what happened here. The controller is very sticky and as one reviewer said if you go off bounds or hit a bad collision the wrong way you will start floating and sliding. I had to restart three times due to being trapped by accidently going out of bounds and not being able to recover. There are a fair few platforming sections none of which are hard, but its a matter of sometimes you go to make a jump and suddenly you start bouncing off the platform like a ball. Those are the two main issues in my opinion. Again I think its a solid prototype. I love short walking sims like this a lot and wish there were more of them. This one just wasn't up to par at all. Its not something someone should sell as a product. As a product its buggy flashy, messy, and overall a bad time, especially compared to its competition and inspirations. Creating a game and releasing it on steam is a great accomplishment, but this one needed probably two more years of polish before it was really ready.
