🔹 EXPECTATIONS: a pathfinding and rolling-block game. 🔹 REALITY: a visually pleasing pathfinding and rolling-block game. 🔶 Axona is a pathfinding game (go from A to B in a set number of moves) that is also a rolling block game. We control a die that collects symbols with its matching face, and brings them to their goals to unlock the exit. It has 72 levels with their difficulty ranging from easy to hard. 🔸 Axona unlocks levels one by one, therefore you won't be able to access level 6 until you've completed number 5. The good news is that you don't need to finish the level in the given number of moves. You can go over and keep playing, you just won't get the level's crystal as a reward. 🔸 This choice of game progression is great, as it makes the game more inclusive to players of different levels of expertise. Probably you won't solve level 9 if you're having a hard time with level 8, but this decision creates a fail safe in case you stumble in just one particular level. 🔸 Pathfinding games more often than not suffer from players brute forcing their solutions. Axona's mechanics introduce the right amount of noise to avoid falling on that 'easy path' while keeping the levels fun and interesting. 🔸 Finally, what stood out the most for me were their visual and sound effects. Axona's dev did a great job here, with really pleasing visuals and sfx that not only don't interfere with the gameplay, but they enhance it. 🔸 Axona is a great proposition in a very specific niche: pathfinding rolling-block games. I recommend it if you are familiar with the genre or if you'd like to be introduced to it. I've been absolutely hooked on this game! It's a puzzle experience with an impressive number of levels that gradually become more complex and challenging in all the right ways. The difficulty curve is well-balanced — it keeps your brain engaged without feeling unfair. The graphics and animations are beautifully done, with a clean and polished style that makes the whole experience even more enjoyable. It’s clear a lot of love went into the design. There were moments when I got stuck on certain levels, but that only made me want to come back and try again later. There’s something really satisfying about solving a level that had you scratching your head earlier. If you're a fan of smart puzzles and charming design, don’t miss out on this one. Highly recommended!
Clever games curator review: 6/10 Very similar to those puzzle games where you role a dice along a grid to get the proper side face up. It is however significantly fancied up in terms of visual presentation. It is indeed pleasant to look at, but makes my mid tier laptop struggle and overheat unless I turn the resolution down to 720p, which you can do in game, and set the refresh rate to 30FPS max, for which you need a 3rd party utility. It has all of the appropriate quality of life features: full undo + quick rotate so that you can see the invisible faces of the cubes with a single button tap. Puzzles definitely are highly constrained so that you can usually brute force the solution just by trying a few different combinations of paths until you find the one that works. I think that is emblematic of the genre, but it doesn't thrill me. In the end I think this is a solid implementation of the genre, but probably won't win any new converts. It does a good job of explaining everything by example rather than tiresome text so if you've never played one of these kinds of rolling cube games then it's probably a fine place to start, especially on sale.
Great little puzzler. Multi language support, Keyboard control (not mouse). Easy interface to navigate. Nice sounds, and music, and the puzzles are fun. I'm enjoying it!
Very cool puzzle game. I like the way you need to think out of the box, try to predict the movement of the dice and its sides. Can be quite tricky. I feel there was taken a lot of time into level design. It also has lots of different levels, and some of them you may not finish with points at the end. So you could try again. Controls are pretty easy, nothing special. Works well with Xbox controller. Game has 70 levels, I'm currently at level 16. This could end in 5-10 hours of Game-play easy for me. Maybe 3-5 if you're really good at such things. But I don't know how complex the late game mechanics are so far, maybe it take me even longer then 10 hours. :-) For someone who likes to puzzles, this is a gem.
Axona is an interesting puzzle game. To me, it screams nostalgia with the idea of Devil Dice on PS1 with their ownk twist on it. I think this game is underrated. As a first game from a dev, this is great, graphics are polished. I don't know if these days 15$ CAD for a dice puzzle game is worth for the current gen of gamers, but for me, it is well worth the price. Assuming you are trying to get every crystals (i.e. find the intended way to solve the puzzles) you should have enough for your money.
Gorgeous graphics, beautiful effects, and a lot of great game juice to keep you pushing through tricky moments. I found myself very immersed in the game's strong visuals and sound design. Axona is a puzzle rolling cube game that truly pushes you to think about solutions very critically given the variety of puzzles, levels, and unique mechanics you'd encounter in the later levels.
What's not to like about this game? Great puzzles, smooth gameplay and controls, and very nice graphics and sounds. There is plenty of replay value in this one and I do keep coming back to it.
Good game. Good level design, pleasant animations and sounds. Getting some of the crystals is very difficult and this should be good for returning after the first playthrough to try the ones missed. The game totally deserves greater player base.
Great polished game from an indie dev. 100 levels of cube puzzles. Clean and simple. A tad repetitve but that's just me.
