Originally when this game came out, I bought it solely for its resemblance to Star of Providence (formerly Monolith), in the hopes of more in the same style to play. I thought the pearl chain scoring system in the style of Downwell was addictive, but the game itself had little draw to replay it once beaten. It was a novel, fun little game, but it didn't have the heart of what inspired it. Coming back to this game after the Loopbreaker update, this is the kind of game I'd hoped it had been from the beginning. The world has been fleshed out to an impeccable degree, adding so much mystery and intrigue that keeps you going for just one more run, desperate to learn more about the people of Carcina and their struggles, and why the player ends up stranded on the planet to begin with. What follows was a unique, heartfelt story about individuality and community that I won't forget. Thanks for giving this game the love it deserved to be, and showing us just how much of a passion project this was to you. I can hear you. Thank you.
So glad I waited for the loopbreaker update to play this. If you have even a passing interest in Star of Providence or maybe minishoot adventures (as well as the bigger shmup genre) you'll love this game.
This game deserves far more recognition, it's a project that shows clear passion behind it. A shmup/roguelite with a heavy emphasis on the shmup portion, it placing importance on the player's skill to complete it's challenges that could all be reliably done with the base starting kit. The roguelite elements present are more there to add variety in weapon types, upgrades and foes faced rather than the mechanics be strictly relied upon to beat the game as commonly seen with a lot of other roguelites. It additionally has some very cool secrets and puzzles present, that while they can feel slightly confusing at times I can at least appreciate for being able to implement these sorts of interesting mechanics in a shmup of all things. So while Astronautilus does lack some slight polish in a few small areas, these can be largely overlooked and I largely expect these to be fixed with time after it's recent large content update. The game also has an absolutely sick soundtrack, definitely recommend giving it a listen.
i cant believe it, they put fishs in space
The game was fun before the Loopbreaker update but now... ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. it's fun, it's got a really good story, new engaging challenges... it's like a new game. the visuals are crazy, with detailed backgrounds and enemies. the music is equally great, and very catchy. and the gameplay is so refined and so fun...
A shmup roguelike with a much heavier emphasis on the shmup aspect rather than the roguelike aspect, which needless to say I think makes it even more enjoyable for someone like myself. This is a sidescroller shmup with the usual screen clear bombs and a few different weapon types you unlock as you progress, but nearly every weapon including your default peashooter offers different pros and cons. Alongside this, at least for your first leadup to the final boss this is a story centric game, which I found to be a really interesting push for replaying previous levels as well as going out of your way to uncover secrets, albeit maybe 1 or 2 parts of these confused me a bit BUT I enjoyed my time with this portion regardless. On top of this the game absolutely oozes charm, a lot of brightly colored visuals on characters and enemies to contrasts the darker background assets which makes for a unique style and easy readability, music's fantastic too. Overall? I think this is not only a good roguelike but a really great entry point into shmups as a whole, its quite rare to see a sidescroller shmup in any capacity nowadays compared to the abundance of vertical ones.
A really cute schmup with a charming array of sea creatures <3
Funny Fish Game. For real though, this game is enjoyable at its core. The presentation and gameplay work in cohesion to create a great experience. In particular, I enjoy the weapon system as it encourages you to change weapons many times during each run, and every weapons feels fun to play. Show your support for this hidden gem of an indie game.
I bought this game predicated on the fact that controller support would be added and it never was. As such, I don't recommend purchasing it.
This game makes me feel like I'm discovering unique 16-bit games from a floppy someone gave me, it's charming yet has tight gameplay. Thumbs up.
