Astro Prospector is a twin-stick single-screen arcade shooter with "hints of bullet hell" and a big 'ole incremental skill tree. A level in the game unfolds like this: you zip around in your ship mining resources, which draws the attention of the evil monopolistic SpaceCorp goons, who try to shoot you down, only for you to shoot them down instead. You also have a limited amount of time per stage, which is measured in how much drinkable coffee you have in the cockpit. The stage ends either when you're drowsy or when you defeat the 'boss,' and the boss only shows up if you're being enough of a nuisance (both with your haul and in defending yourself). The upgrades are satisfying: multiple mining lasers, longer range, better damage, faster maneuverability, deployable bombs/mines, homing missiles, deployable turrets with their own range and rate of fire, orbiting "moons" that are both defensive and let you ram enemies, a huge pulse wave that 'eats' enemy projectiles, etc. Took me six hours to complete the main campaign and max out the entire skill tree. After that I spent about 20 minutes on the more recent "Endless Coffee" update, which attempts to reorganize the game's mechanics into a rogue-like. This was a fun incremental game, but nothing about the rogue-like version of it was compelling, and there are no shortage of extremely famous/successful rogue-likes for me to get to. For me the best non-idle incremental game on Steam is still Shelldiver, but Astro Prospecter is a fun time. Space Rock Breaker is also pretty good, if you like this one.
It's a positive review with caveats. The incremental side of things is nice, but it also gradually pushes further into bullet hell territory. I'm not good at bullet hell at the best of times due to health which affects my reaction times and motor control, but what makes it particularly painful is that you don't have direct control over your ship. The ship follows the mouse cursor at a delay which isn't cancelled out even at max speed. And then some of the achievements are for completing the hardest bullet hell levels, without losing a single life. Yea - not getting those.
This was so cute and fun! Love bullet hells and this was awesome :) Not particularly difficult but if you're good enough you can actually get to the end before getting all the upgrades which is pretty satisfying! Took me 4h to beat the game and then another 30 mins to max out the tree and finish all the bosses without losing a life. Haven't even tried the second roguelite mode yet! Easy recommend at that price
The story mode: Not going to lie, I'm getting up there in age so I think my reflexes aren't what they used to be (or my eyes for that matter), so the final stage/boss battle took me longer than maybe most and was frustrating. But it should be frustrating. There should be some skill involved. You want games anybody can play and win easily? The Nintendo consoles already exist for people who never could get past adolescence. The endless mode: Quite enjoyable. Though, endless is a tad wrong of a name to some extent as you do end your endless run when you're in a stage that requires a boss kill and you fail to get the boss kill. It's only endless if you endlessly are able to win each stage's boss requirement. I'd like to see this either changed, or a secondary endless mode where it's the same thing but back to the survival aspects. If I survive a run, and a boss, I want to continue. That's just my take on it. Great game, great price. Worth it if you can handle not getting mad at your own skill issues and are willing to learn from your mistakes and try again.
I do not enjoy bullet-hell games, but this one feels very rewarding and not that hard! The incremental part is not that big, but the game was surprisingly good and balanced. Nice difficulty curve (3rd sector feels a bit overwhelming but then you get nice upgrades to deal with it). Very well polished playability and controls, nice job! Worth every dollar
