Once you die, the accomplishments screen will give you an idea of what you could be doing in this game. You're gonna need the quick reference available at: https://slicebar.itch.io/astra-protocol-2 Read that manual. At least twice. Experiment. Die. A lot. Display Transmissions, always! It's a blast if you ever had to use a DOS based system.
Ever wonder what gaming felt like in the 1980s, this game will scratch that itch.
What a crap is this, yes retro is nice but not with this annoying snail speed. Don't waste your money on this.
The premise is cool but It runs hilariously badly. Worse than a DOS game on a 486. In fact, had this been coded for DOS it would have run faster. The 40 minutes of play time is me trying to play with the settings to make it run faster. If you think this would be a cool game for your linux system you're completely wrong. Don't bother.
Absolutely terrible. The only title that get's worse following an update. They've now gone for an old Cathode Ray glass monitor look with it's curved screen appearance. This however doesn't fit within the boundaries of your monitor, so a portion of the screen is missing. Also now for some reason to type a character I have pause for a second or two to wait for the game to catch up, this on a game that is text based for the most part, a game that often starts with only seconds to react because an asteroid is fast looming upon your craft or you are taking radiation damage. Not withstanding the extensive manual just to do anything with this game, the lack of any guidance - the premise being the 'fun' is supposedly figuring it all out. I liken this to some plain of Hell where you are placed in some situation where you are doomed to die that keeps repeating itself eternally. A shame because the general idea behind the game seemed unique nowadays ( though much older titles did similar back in the days when you'd buy a named home computer such as a commodore ) this one just misses the mark in too many ways. I gave it a shot, but cannot recommend it to others sadly.
Please don't stop the development of this game. It is a very unique game. I could imagine the game with even more events and features. Maybe one day a multiplayer option if it is even possible *** update 2026 It is amazing to see how the Devs keep working on this little gem 💎. The idea of the version of the multiplayer they are working on is even better than what I imagined. I can't wait to try it out (it is difficult at the moment because as I understand it is only local). The visual upgrades are also welcomed. The game has a steep learning curve but today I have managed to successfully dock to a space station and that was soo satisfieing. I hope they will kepp working on the development. Some sort of simplified version of duskers implementation or a get the survivals rescued or some other activities would be welcomed additition as well at one point. This game is not for everyone for sure because our attention span is very limited these days but if you have the patience to learn the manual then it is definitely worth it. ( One additional request towards the devs would be to fix the auto complete funcion because it doesn't always work) ** Additional info : This game "stays in character" from start to finish, and I love it. Right from the jump, it acts as your ship's operating system, making it feel like your actual laptop is the direct interface for your ship's systems. That's why there are no traditional menus to start or save the game. When you want to quit, you literally type a command to shut down, and the terminal exits like an old-school PC. Everything is designed for pure immersion. This is clearly a passion project, and I love that the devs refuse to cater to casual players just to broaden the appeal. It might take time, but as they add more content, this is going to become something incredibly special for hardcore space game fans like me.
Great work on this. Nostalgic and fun to play. I had the pleasure of playing this at the Yorkshire games festival and meeting the team.
This is an interesting experiment. It's a combination of strict simulation requiring a manual to learn and based on old school systems. There's some things I dislike but get why they put in it like the inability to control text/animation speed which is an element of its style. It's intentionally clunky. It's strange. For $7 it's also worth trying and experiencing a bit of the experiment. It's certainly going to appeal to certain kind of person, and I have a appreciation for it's artistic/experimental value even though I'm really not interested in playing all that much of it.
This game can be a little bit frustrating to get into, but somehow is one of the most immersive games I’ve ever played. It’s all I’ve been able to think about for a week
