This game is a real gem - original, polished and tons of fun. WHAT I LOVED: - Hardcore gameplay mixing platformer, role-playing and puzzle features in a good proportion. Keeping all the inventory and skills when respawning is the right choice, too. - Colourful sci-fi world with nice animations. How much detail and ambience the developer conveys just using keyboard symbols is mind-blowing. - Nice characters and dialogue. The fact that the developer actually wrote a sci-fi novel about this world does help the game :) - A lot of easter eggs and humour. - Very nice music that fits the world like a glove. - Minigames, which you can play on computer terminals inside the main game and earn a few pi-astres! - Brought back fond childhood memories of Commander Keen and The Lost Vikings (if those ring a bell for anyone...) WHERE I HESITATED: - Mining resources can feel a bit tedious at first, but gets much more comfortable as soon as you craft the right tools. - Slow regeneration of health almost drove me nuts a few times :) The amount of content is limited in the early access version, but from what I know the author has many levels planned, and you can see depth even from what is currently in the game. Definitely recommended and worth every cent!

This was originally a positive review but sadly, there's not been one word form the dev on any further development beyond the initial demo so now in April 2024 I'm calling this abandoned and editing this and making it a negative review. As it stands, it's a playable demo that shows off some incredible vision and fantastic gameplay elements. I was really looking forward to further development but it never eventuated. The dev has been working on other projects but all are missing some of the elements that made ASCIIDENT's demo (because that's all this is) so great. ASCIILL is fun but it's not ASCIIDENT. ASCIIDENT was very unique and fun with some really cool gameplay elements and every subsequent game from the same dev is missing some of what ASCIIDENT had. The last update to ASCIIDENT was Jan '21 (and I bought it just after that). In Feb '21 the developer announced he was changing the game engine over to Unity but there's been very little word since. In Aug '21 someone asked if there were any updates and the dev replied that the engine change was taking more time than planned. Up until Sep '21 there were some posts on the FB page showing off new elements but no updates to users. Apparently in a thread somewhere the dev said that if more people bought the game, he'd do more work on it (and presumably we'd be closer to an update/release). And he's since put out other games (ASCIILL) and has another announced as releasing in 2024 (not even a month given though) but no further word on ASCIIDENT and all questions have been ignored. So it's very hard to recommend a game that seems to be stagnant, even though I love it. I'd love more people to buy it and hope that he might continue and finish it, because it has so much promise. But sadly, I think it'd be a waste of money because it looks very much like the dev has no intention of doing any more work on ASCIIDENT.
It would be nonsensical to think that this game was developed specifically for me, but that's how it feels; the story, art, feels, crafting, upgrades, and worlds. I lerv everything about this game. Seriously enjoyed the game but I was shocked I paid 10 dollars for a demo. you will get 2 hrs max out of this I played around and goofed off I am not going to refund I just hope it gets finished. I don't want to leave a negative review but I hope people see this isn't a feature complete game. Edit: Development for this game has been stale for 3 years. I would not buy it unless you want a demo.
Early Access review here, version 0.6.14. This is an ASCII-based Metroidvania game with RPG elements and emphasis on repeated character death. The graphics are very well done for ASCII, and while the "True Color" option is the most engaging, there are plenty of graphics options to make it seem even more old-school. The music is a decent 16-bit tune that manages to not be annoying even after a thousand loops. As it stands right now, it's a relatively short game with way too many lives and one main flaw: resource management needs some hints and balance. It isn't obvious that you can get reprogrammers from one tower but not the other tower, or that resources are scarce enough that you'll need to make careful decisions. The game pushes you toward making purchases you'll regret when you're unable to get items you actually need later on, which is interesting, but annoying (I was unable to get the flashlight, the sword, or even the inventory upgrade—and that last one is super-annoying not to have). The people in the game should warn you about resource scarcity, and you should probably get some indication of roughly where in the game (how far out) crafting items are located. Money is also a little too easy to come by thanks to the minigames. This wouldn't be too bad for replayability (on a second run-through you'd know better), but there's no way to reset the game at the moment. I tried deleting the game directory and reinstalling, but it didn't work. I can't figure out where they stored the save file on my machine. Maybe it resets if you die 100 times, but I've killed most of the monsters already so I have to go a long way to kill myself and I'm not doing that seventy more times to find out. That said, these are minor complaints and I liked the game. I really look forward to what comes next, and I'd recommend playing it even in early access, unless you want to wait for the mane event later on. I'll be playing it again as soon as I figure out how to delete my save file. XP
This is one of those times where I wish there was an option for a neutral review. I can see ambition in this game, also a number of things which could and should be improved upon. I've never been a fan of minecraft type games and while you do have a clone machine with 99 lives, you're going to lose health by mining anything with your hands and you won't know which things are insta-kill until you get hit. I understand the physics involved, but it means you're going back to a healing fire (again) and waiting another minute to recover full health. From what I understand, you can reach the end of the demo quickly and it's early access. $7.99 or $9.99 seems way too much for what content you do currently get. Until this get released as a full, complete game rather than a demo, I'd say it's worth about a dollar or two at most. Paying for a demo does not sit well with me. Sorry dev, hopefully one day steam will offer a neutral option for reviews. This software has potential if there is a lot more content added in. I feel like my time was being deliberately wasted with harvesting resources and recharging health.
The look is super unique. The game mechanics are well thought-out. Even a couple of mini games. The pacing throughout the level feels good. Can't wait to play more. Give us an MMO!
This game is really charming. You can see the passion of the creator in the environment and music of the game. I can't wait for a new update.
