Artesnaut is a very different kind of RPG from what I normally expect because almost the entire game is built around text and automatic progress. I create my own party, choose their races and jobs, give them special epithets and then send them off into dungeons. The battles and exploration happen automatically, so I am mostly coming back to see what happened, check my equipment and work out what I want to change before sending everyone out again. That sounds like it would be too passive for an RPG, but there is actually quite a lot going on underneath it. The character building is probably the part I enjoy most. I am not just picking a class and leaving it at that. I can combine races, jobs, skills, equipment and epithets to create different types of characters, and the epithets can give extra bonuses that help shape how each member of my party works. Equipment also has plenty of options, so I can spend a lot of time working out which combination makes the most sense rather than simply equipping the item with the biggest number. I like this because it gives me something to think about even though I am not directly controlling the battles. There is also a surprising amount of content behind the simple presentation. The game has around 1,000 pieces of equipment and 85 dungeons, with text and bits of lore attached to the equipment and locations. I actually like that idea because it gives me a reason to pay attention to what I am finding instead of treating every piece of loot as another number. The story is still being expanded through chapters and updates too, so there is a proper adventure underneath all the automatic combat. It feels more like reading through a large fantasy world and managing the party than playing a normal action RPG. The biggest problem for me is that I am not actually doing much during the important parts of the game. I can decide how my characters are built and which skills they use, but once I send them into a dungeon I mostly sit back and see what happens. That works when I want something relaxing, but it does not give me the same feeling as actually controlling my party during a difficult battle. There are times where I would much rather be making decisions during a fight instead of waiting for the result. This is very much an idle RPG first, and I have to be in the right mood for that. I also have to be careful with the amount of progression and the free to play side. The Steam version gives me automatic repeat for free, with a base limit of 30 runs, while purchases can increase that limit or improve expedition efficiency. There are also in game purchases and chance based purchases. I like that I can play without paying and that the Steam version does not have advertisements, but I still notice that some of the longer term convenience is tied to optional purchases. The game also came to Steam in July 2026 after already being developed for several years on mobile, so the amount of existing content is impressive, but the mobile style of progression is still very noticeable. What keeps me interested is the feeling that there is always another little part of the build that I can improve. I can change someone's job, try different skills, combine equipment, send the party into another dungeon and come back later to see what they found. I like having something that can progress in the background without needing my full attention, especially when I am more interested in planning than controlling every attack. The downside is that this also makes the game easy to leave alone for too long, because sometimes there is not much reason for me to actively sit there and watch it. Overall, Artesnaut is a surprisingly deep idle RPG that gives me much more control over character builds than I expected. I really like the huge amount of equipment, the epithet system, party creation and all the text and lore surrounding the world. The automatic combat is the biggest limitation because it takes away a lot of the interaction I normally want from an RPG, and the free to play progression can feel a little too close to its mobile roots. Still, when I treat it as a long term party building game rather than a traditional RPG, the idea works quite well for me. There is enough depth here to keep me experimenting, but not enough direct gameplay for me to put it among my very highest rated RPGs. Rating: 7.1/10
