Arakion: Book One

EDIT: I initially recommended this due to reason mentioned bellow as I thought it had great potential if developed well. However after almost 4 years it is still in early access, with very little improvmnents and just with more buggy and not fully engaging content that by the time this game is fully finished will be completely out of date to the constantly evolving gaming standards. Buy on sale if you are fan of a genre or don't buy at all. Closest thing i could find to "Legend of Grimrock". If you liked that you're gonna love this game too. Still needs some time to develop, but once it's finished it should be great.

This ones full of potential. The bits that are developed look promising, but the bugs got the better of me. 5+ hours in and can't progress due to bugs. Real shame as the bits that are done so far look great. However I will revise my rating when there's a bit more meat on the bones and some of those game breaking bugs are ironed out.

Arakion is still in early access, but it has real potential. While the concepts of every gridder are respected and pleasing for the fans of the genre, it is in its uniqueness that Arakion wins; there is so much more here than in the average grid based RPG, that it is hard to summarize it all in a review. The world is stunningly beautiful, there is love in every detail, trees and floating islands and puzzles; the characters are aesthetically appealing, with well thought backgrounds and different birthplaces for every different race; world-building and crafting are fun and a very nice introduction in the genre; even the ideas behind the NPC are new and refreshing. There is still work to do, but “refreshing” is the right word to define Arakion: it is a breath of fresh air in the modern video game industry. This is even more astonishing if you consider that this is a one-man team product! Thumbs up for this little gem. Dive in and become “Venturers”!

Interesting but awkward battle system.

This game is not ready for early access. The controls for combat work only intermittently and the interface is poorly designed. There is no way to view what items are equipped or tell which things can be harvested and which cannot. Creatures appear to be able to attack diagonally or melee attack from a distance. In short very few of the basic game functions work as they should.

This game is currently Early Access. As such there are a lot of bugs and a few dead end quests that I have discovered. Having said that, considering this is a solo core developer project, this is off to a good start. Arakion reminds me a lot of Grimrock. Some of the controls are the same but the User Interface is vastly different. It took me a few hours to get used to it. I got about 7 hours in before I ran into what I think is the end of what has been developed so far. So, for now at least, I will set the game aside and come back in a few months after an update and continue my review.
