It is a nice and short visual novel that feels like a summer vacation at the beach. With beautiful backgrounds and a story that can sometimes turn a little sad or bittersweet, the player follows a group of friends living at a town with a rich mythological culture – each of them who wears a “mask” to hide their own struggles. There aren’t any choices except for the “route” you want to go, and whilst all of them also provide hints and nods to the other stories some of them are resolved quite easy and quickly. But again, this game never tries to dwell too deep in some aspects except for Robin’s struggles with providing for his family and sick mother. The ending can also be very bittersweet. Content warning: - disease - hospital - sea/underwater - body horror (to an extent) - mild
suicidal thoughts
- death of a parent - dysphoria, maybe?
Cute game and I wasn't expecting it to be this good! I liked all of the love interests and their stories, though Anya's is undoubtedly the longest and most fleshed-out route. I feel like I'd have enjoyed the others more if they had as much meat to them as Anya's, but then again, she is the poster girl besides Elisabeth.
This game is beautiful. It is clear how much work the developer has put into this, and the game has quite a good mix of comedy and seriousness. Even with this being SoftColor's first published game, I have great hopes for them in the future.
I really enjoyed every minute of Aquadine. I loved how the main characters held different outlooks on life. Apathy, cynicism, idealism, realism, and even just being conflicted. Their interactions were always a treat to watch. The story itself feels like a modern Book of Aesops with each route teaching a different life lesson. And the True Ending was beautiful. It may just be my favorite of any visual novel. The music never failed to bring out the intended emotional response. Seeing the main character onscreen for everything he is in helped me connect with him. And all the imagery was a delight. Having said that. There were some things that didn't work for me. I found the character animations to be a little odd. The trembling was all right but the sudden bouncing was a little much. The limited voice acting does give the characters personality but the repetition of those lines and them not matching the text presented took me out of the experience somewhat. Aquadine is a pearl to be found in the vast ocean of visual novels. I give it a 9/10.
