When I bought an item and was THEN informed that the price of all items was going to increase with every item bought, I felt like a rug had been pulled out from under me, especially with how extremely unreliable and underwhelming the item I bought was (the multi-hit axe, which procs so rarely as to be completely worthless). I figured I'd keep on moving through because i was interested in seeing the daily life developments for some of the characters, and then nothing happaned. By the time I hit the point where I was going to be rocking up and cutting the same four willow trees for like an hour straight I felt all desire to proceed fall out of my fingers. 'it's just three dollars' yeah but there's nothing here, it's a chore of a game with no payoff that slaps you in the back of the head at what you feel like is your first milestone.
Mixed title, check carefully what you like before picking it up. Cute pixel art, pretty simple but it looks pleasing with good use of color. Music is really solid, sound effects are good. The story is pretty simple, though it hints at more than is actually present in the game. Possibly something for future expansion, but as it is the ending (such as it is) might feel unsatisfying. The gameplay is very simple, walk up to trees, press a button to start chopping, pick logs up when done. It's very grindy and not super interesting as a game you just sit there and play; but it's solid as something to keep you occupied while watching or listening to something else. The amount of times you can fail to chop a log can get very frustrating, and leveling doesn't always help in reducing that. The worst one it took 12 swings to get a single log! The early game is very rough to earn enough money to open up shipping bins and buy stuff from the shop, later on you'll get enough accessories to earn money faster than you spend it. Food buffs are unlocked by a quest and are also a money sink, but very useful mid to late game. Quests are present, but there's no way to track them. For what it is, it's an inexpensive title you can play in the background, and if that's what you want it's worth a pickup. Otherwise you might want to look for a different "cozy" game to play.
Neat little in-between of an idle game and a micro Zelda-like. Not much to it aside from cute visuals and a chill atmosphere, but at 3 bucks, who's gonna complain? Buy this if you want to zone out while listening to some relaxing music as you watch numbers pop up and your axe tinks away. The only thing that's gonna interrupt your zen will be your trips back to a delivery box to drop off your logs.
Relaxing lumberjack sim with a lot to do and see and people to talk to. Charming graphic style and great soundtrack. If only chopping down real trees was this rewarding! And now we know where all the log puns came from in the other Colorgrave games.
Wow, this game has a lot of charm, but that’s about all it has. It’s a monotonous, chore filled slog wrapped in the Color Grave aesthetic and its wonderfully odd charm. It feels like spending five hours grinding a gathering profession in an MMO, repeating the same tasks over and over with very little variety. This game is incredibly niche. I’d only recommend it if you’re a huge Color Grave fan, and even then, I have my reservations. I loved the world and the characters, but they weren’t enough to carry the gameplay. At around $3, though, it feels appropriately priced for the experience. Edit: I didn't directly address it, but this is a game you are obviously meant to play while in the middle of another task. It's probably best played while binging a show, or watching a movie. This is not a stand alone experience that takes your full attention and focus. This is for when you are distracted and killing time. I still can't say you need a bare bones game for that task, but you do you.
This is not a big game with big hurdles or to get stressed out, but to hang back and really relax. The gameplay loop is really repetitive, you have a little progression with your levels (which you can reset at some point) and other axes and baubles, but maybe that is what you might want after a long day of hard work. Stop thinking, decelerate from your busy workdays and chop some trees, talk to the other villagers and listen to the soundtrack.
I'm not typically into games that are about doing straight labor, but this game was short and snappy enough to hold my attention. It especially helped when I realized there's a trick that adds a skill element to chopping as fast as possible which kept my hands very busy while playing (busy enough to actually hurt my hands if I tried too hard). The game's cute as well, and I wasn't bugged by the game's attempt to be calming (I typically hate environmental noises and serene music).
April Grove is one of the most relaxing games I've played in a long time. The soundtrack is fantastic, the pixel art is beautiful, and the whole game has such a cozy atmosphere. One of my favorite parts was the dialogue. The characters are fun to talk to, and it's obvious that a lot of care and effort went into writing them, as well as the game as a whole. For the price, it's an absolute steal. My only real criticism is that I wish there were a guide available in the Steam Community. After finishing April's main quests, there were still quite a few things I couldn't figure out. It would have been nice to have somewhere to look them up when I got stuck. Other than that, I had a great time with it. I honestly hope the developers make a full-blown story rich adventure game in this style someday, because I would buy it in a heartbeat.
