An apple a day keeps the evil creatures away. Story: You play as a little apple adventurer. One day a little kid named Cartboi has gone missing and evil creatures have appeared in the nearby area, so you grab your sword and go out looking for him and find the reason why the creatures invaded the land. Before going forward with the review I have to mention that this game is a sort of proof of concept, so it's more like a demo to gauge interest in a fully fledged sequel. In turn there's really not much of a story here. It's a simple set up for a quest and you set out on it that's really about it. It's fine enough for and there's some decent writing for such a small game, so I'd definitely want to see how a full game would look like from a story perspective. Graphics: Visually Apple Slash looks great. I really like the contrast of black, white and red it really makes everything really pop and I have to give props for the animations as they look really great. I really like the design of the world and the creatures and characters you meet along the way, they all look really cutesy and fit in very well in the world. I think the only two real negatives is how limited the enemy design is, you're basically fighting the same enemy for the entire game. It's all the same blob that differs in size and then later down the line you encounter a new type of enemy, but it does get tedious to see the same enemies over and over again. Also each location doesn't have any visual distinct features, so you can sometimes go around in circles and only notice so when you reach a landmark which there's not many in the game. It does help that the map is small, but still something worth pointing out. Audio: The audio design is pretty decent. It's very satisfying swinging your sword around and listening to the impact land on the enemies is just great. I also have to give props to the power up sound when you're doing good in combat really helps just making you feel good about doing good in combat. I also really liked the soundtrack. There's some great music and it really matches the adventurous tone of the game. While there's generally not much music it's decent enough. I especially really liked the song that ran alongside the end credits which really nicely tied the whole package together. Gameplay: Apple Slash is a hack and slash game where you explore your surroundings, looking for items and fighting enemies. The game itself is very simplistic and doesn't require much thought behind anything, you just hack and slash your way through the game. So let's begin with the combat. It's very fun although a bit way too easy. Even though there are some moments where the difficulty increases there's generally not much to take you down as long as you keep tapping your M1 button. Also if you look around you can find upgrades that will make you an even bigger force that can't be easily stopped. There's some side exploration that is the only real other goal you have, but honestly it's all very simplistic. I think this by far the worst aspect of the game and I do get that this is supposed to be proof of concept of sorts, but I feel like there's not much variety in anything you do and the games easy difficulty makes it an absolute breeze to get through. Verdict: Apple Slash is a very fun game and clearly shows that tons of heart was put into it. It's a bit too simple and there's really not much reason to replay it once you're done, but I'm very interested in seeing how this could be realized into a full game, so sign me up. Final Rating: 7.5/10 Pros: + Cute art style with great character design + Some really good music and a really good audio design to boot + Combat is very satisfying Cons: - Way too easy - Not much variety in terms of gameplay and enemies - The entire map looks pretty much the same, with very little distinct landmarks NOTE: I was provided with a key by the developer/publisher for review purposes on the behalf of the group Completing the Backlog, this did not impact my opinion on the game whatsoever. Entertaining but also kind of depressing.....
Solid apple game that was fun to replay godspeed on your journey apple slasher 10/10 apple game 🍎
OOOF... I REALLY DONT WANT TO GIVE THIS GAME A THUMB UP, Because: 1- its a one stage game (extremely short) 2- ts replayability relies on achievements. I dont know if chansing them opens more game, but... 3- Ends on a "to be continued" fashion, almost a cliff hanger (which would be an automatic "no" for me). 4- i despise Gun Devil BUT: 1- there is obviously dedication to make this a good, fun and interesting experience 2- i got it dirt cheap 3- it gets something most games today get WRONG wrong, meaning its fun, and it becomes fun fast. MOVEMENT is fast enough, POWER PROGRESSION doesnt require grinding nor takes ages to pick up. 4- sets up a world interesting enough to ask for the next chapter. But dont get me wrong, for its original price, this would definetly be a "NO". BUT... TWIST ENDING!!!! its been 4 years and they havent continued the story.... so it IS a "no"
Apple slash is a super short adventure game, for what it usually goes on sale for though, it doesn't overstay its welcome. Gameplay wise its almost mindless, you hold to slash and move to traverse the landscapes, it never really tells a story but slowly gives you hints and nods of where to go, the game isn't too big either so if you get lost it usually doesn't take long to find your way, the combat honestly you can just tank everything, hold slash and charge through, this applies to all areas and the only exception is the final boss and even then its really not hard at all, achievements wise there's some replay value with hitless and speedruns, so learning what things you can skip and just progress the main story is interesting i'd say too, the misc achievements let you explore a lil bit of the world, although it barely clocked over 1 hour with absolutely everything, so let me make it clear, this game is very very very short. Graphics wise its pretty clean, the black, white and red work well but can lead to everything looking kind of the same so navigation wise it hurts a bit, but i still think its very stylistic. Music wise, the main track i thought was quite mysterious and somber, fits well for something like a pikmin landscape, being lost in a new world and all its unknowns. Something of note, the game has some minor dark moments which took me by surprise a bit, namely
Carther's son dying to the final boss, your brother dying if you head back to the starting area, and the fist punching the concert people to death for waking them up.
i found it humorous and to me adds that tiny touch of character which otherwise might make me think the game isn't substancial enough to be paid for, and to some degree it feels conflicting, but i give it a pass and say if you want to have a chill adventure for 1 hour, here it is.
A minimalist, sub-1 hour mini metroidvania hack and slasher. Combat is simple but surprisingly weighty and satisfying. A wonderful snack of a game.
Una experiencia muy corta y no supone ninguna dificultad ni presenta ninguna mecánica original. Pero los gráficos están bastante amigables y los pocos diálogos que tiene son bastante graciosos. Dead bro
Good game, but it would be much more fitting if it was on mobile. It is very short as well. Also 5 whole dabloons for this game is way too much so wait for a sale.
