I didn't like what little I played of it. It wasn't fun for me and I could tell I wasn't going to like it; and the hoverboard movement makes me queasy very quickly. The hoverboard moves too quickly at times (when you boost especially) and the visuals get too blurry and the camera shakes way too much for me. I don't want to play it and I don't know if I could without getting sick.
AnShi is a fun but flawed narrative exploration game in the style of games like ABZU and Submerged. After crash landing on a mysterious desert planet, you set out to uncover the mysteries of the alien ruins scattered across the landscape. I enjoyed the story, and the music is outstanding. However, the movement can be clunky, and the visuals are a mixed bag. AnShi distinguishes itself from other exploration games by giving you access to a speedy hoverboard. You need it too, as the environments are quite big. The board feels great in flat open space, but often gets caught on rough terrain or walls, which is unfortunate as AnShi has many corridors. Even in open spaces, the game uses invisible walls to box you in, a lazy choice when it could have gone for realistic looking topographical features. The story is told purely through images, and thus somewhat ambiguous, but I liked this. It feels appropriately like you are historian reconstructing things from a partial record of the past. The score is exceptional and knows how to complement both the dynamic moments of zooming through the desert and the quiet moments where AnShi leaves you alone with the story (and your thoughts). The visual are nice at times, but the game has too many reds, yellows, and browns, and I disliked the motion blur when moving on the hoverboard. I don't think AnShi quite matches up to the standard games like ABZU have established for this genre, but it's still worth playing if you enjoy storytelling through exploration.
TL; DR: A relaxing experience with awesome music and stunning visuals. Playtime 3-4h (steam stopped logging because internet connection loss) If you have limited time on hand but still want to experience a beautiful game with a story like Journey or Abzu, then AnShi is definetly for you. It is a kind of "walking simulator" but classifying AnShi as one wouldn't do the game justice. With its mechanics i would say it is more, like what a rouge-like or rouge-lite to the original rouge is, is AnShi to a walking simulator. It is a beautiful and relaxing experience, an interactive movie and who enjoys such kind of games will probably enjoy AnShi. Hoverboard / 10
AnShi is a fantastic game with a few flaws that I think could be easily fixed. The great: The graphics and music are stunning, and the story, sound effects, level design and character animation are all very good. Visually and sonically AnShi is really immersive as the environments are so big and detailed and the sound effects fit the world much better than I have seen/heard in many games. It is clear that a lot of time was spent on the design of the game, especially noticeable in the character animations which, not surprisingly, were motion captured. For example, your character doesn't just do the minimum required to perform an action - sometimes they will try one method of doing something and then try something else when that doesn't work. This is really rare to see in games and was a nice touch by the developer. Some areas of the game feel huge and they're beautifully designed with amazing lighting and hundreds (thousands?) of objects in them making them more real somehow. I love the soundtrack too. It reminded me of the music in Ori in some areas and of Interstellar in others, and it is so cinematic and emotional in places it works perfectly. The not so great: The main problem is with the controls. I tried using a controller but found it too annoying to operate so ended up using mouse and keyboard, which was smoother. I didn't have any problem with the movement speed others have mentioned and I liked the visual effect when changing speed, but I found it weird how quickly you banked left and right with the slightest movement. Banking left/right should be a little more gradual and not so jerky. There could also be options to minimise the visual effects that cause nausea in some players. The walking speed is ridiculously slow and there is too much of a disconnect between the fast, fluid hover-board speed and walking speed. I would just get rid of walking altogether and have the run speed as the only non-hover movement - this would also remove the need to hold Shift to run. In a few places in the map you can hit invisible walls where you stop suddenly and unexpectedly. This happened when I was exploring and trying to work out where I needed to go. These boundaries could be tidied up a bit to avoid this. Another annoying thing was that you had to be exactly beside light beams to activate them - one or two steps away in any direction and the activate prompt disappeared. It's a shame these issues haven't been fixed a few months after release because they should be quick to implement and would make a huge difference. Any of the people who left a negative review after less than an hour game time have missed out on the best parts of the game. It took me about 3 hours to finish the game, except for 3 achievements and I didn't find all of the artefacts, and I will probably play it again some time to try to get those.
What a strange game, that doesn't quite work, the controls aren't great, and you never truly feel like you are in control. Also the game gave me a headache, so graphically it is poorly optimized
AnShi is certainly not a game for everyone, it’s priced as an interactive story or rather a cinematic piece of entertainment that can be enjoyed in one sitting and appreciated long after. The thing that will kept you engaged throughout the entire ride that is AnShi, is the god-tier masterwork that is the soundtrack, which was created by Devel Sullivan.
Impressive work. Besides the enjoyable surfing mechanic, Anshi offers a variety of valuable features. The landscapes are huge and interesting, the story (yet to be explored entirely) seems to have some real depth and feels thought through, so it's fun to discover it all bit by bit. The music really makes it all like a world you can dive into and get lost (in a good way) and the sequences create a feeling of being carried through it all in a non-restrictive way. Those who like calm gaming experiences with a deeper meaning should definitely consider checking out Anshi!
