[ANOMALY TAPES]: Beyond Reality is a horror game that I think does a good job of making simple exploration feel uncomfortable. I am moving through a series of strange environments while using a handheld camera to document what I find, and the main goal is to survive the different anomalies that appear throughout the tapes. There are eight main levels, with each one bringing its own type of threat, so I cannot always rely on exactly the same approach. I liked that because it makes the game feel more like a collection of connected horror situations than one long repeated chase. The anomaly mechanics are probably the strongest part for me. The different entities are not all handled in exactly the same way, so I have to pay attention and learn what each one can do. Some situations are more about hiding and avoiding danger, while others make me think more carefully about how I move through the environment. I like horror games more when the enemy has a mechanic behind it rather than simply chasing me around, and this game does a good job of giving the anomalies their own identities. The camera perspective also works really well with the atmosphere. The game has a strong 1990s VHS style without making the screen so distorted that I cannot see what is happening. I liked looking through the camera while exploring because it makes the environments feel more like something I have discovered on an old tape. The pixelated retro presentation also fits the strange environments and gives the game a clear visual identity. It is not trying to look modern, and I think that actually helps it. The mystery is another reason I kept going. Each tape gives me another part of the story, and there are clues and hidden details that I can pick up by paying attention to what is around me. I like that the game does not explain everything immediately because it gives me a reason to think about what I have already seen. Some of the story is deliberately unclear, but I think that works better here than having everything explained directly. The darker themes also make the overall experience quite unsettling. The biggest weakness for me is that some of the levels can feel more frustrating than scary. Navigation is not always as clear as I would like, and there are moments where I am more focused on figuring out where I am supposed to go than actually being scared. The developer did make changes to some of the early difficulty and added things like notes and navigation markers, which helped. I still think some sections could have been smoother, especially when the game is trying to maintain tension. I also think the game benefits from being free now. It originally released in October 2024, but it became free to play in August 2025 after the developer lost access to the project files and could no longer properly update or patch it. That does mean I have to accept that the game is effectively finished in its current state rather than expecting a long series of future improvements. There are 30 achievements and enough hidden details to give me a reason to replay parts of it, but I think the main attraction is still experiencing the horror and piecing together the mystery. Overall, I think [ANOMALY TAPES]: Beyond Reality is a solid retro horror experience with some genuinely good ideas. I liked the different anomaly mechanics, the VHS presentation and the way the story is spread across the tapes. The navigation and occasional rough edges hold it back a little, and I wanted some of the levels to feel more polished, but the atmosphere is strong enough to keep me interested. I especially liked that the game asks me to pay attention instead of relying entirely on loud scares, and as a free horror game I think it is well worth trying if I enjoy strange mysteries and survival horror.
