Angel Essence is a movement-focused 3D platforming adventure that combines freeform exploration, treasure hunting, combat, and increasingly advanced traversal mechanics within a surreal collection of floating islands. Developed and published by g3bsoft, it follows Angelique, a treasure hunter who ventures into a strange heavenly realm in search of the mysterious essence hidden somewhere within it. The premise remains deliberately straightforward, allowing the environments and mechanical progression to carry much of the experience instead of overwhelming the adventure with extensive storytelling. Traversal is the game's defining feature. Angelique has access to far more than an ordinary jump, with techniques such as dashing, wall-running, wall-bouncing, backflipping, and super sprinting forming the foundation of exploration. These abilities become increasingly satisfying when combined rather than treated as isolated actions. Learning how to preserve momentum, redirect movement, and transition between techniques gives the platforming considerable mechanical depth. Difficult locations can initially appear unreachable, only for the solution to become obvious after gaining a better understanding of the movement system. Gravity nodes add another interesting element to navigation. Angelique can manifest these nodes and incorporate them into traversal sequences, opening possibilities for creative approaches to environmental challenges. This complements the game's broader emphasis on player freedom. Instead of constantly demanding one precise solution, many situations encourage experimentation with the available mechanics. The result is a platformer where mastering movement can be just as rewarding as discovering the collectibles waiting at the destination. Exploration takes place across a sprawling assortment of interconnected or accessible islands, and challenges do not always need to be completed in a strict sequence. This nonlinear approach gives players room to investigate whatever catches their attention. Hidden collectibles encourage careful exploration of unusual structures, distant platforms, and less obvious pathways. More importantly, collecting items contributes to progression by unlocking upgrades that can customize Angelique's movement and combat capabilities. Exploration therefore serves a mechanical purpose rather than existing purely for completion percentages. Combat introduces additional variety during the journey. Strange enemies inhabit the heavenly environments, requiring Angelique to use her abilities offensively while remaining mobile. Fighting is most effective when viewed as an extension of the movement system, with positioning and quick traversal helping maintain the energetic pace established by the platforming. Combat may not overshadow exploration as the central attraction, but it prevents the adventure from becoming an uninterrupted sequence of jumping challenges and gives the player's growing collection of abilities another practical application. The visual direction reinforces the game's retro-inspired personality. Rather than pursuing realism, Angel Essence uses stylized 3D environments, fantastical landscapes, suspended islands, and unusual creatures to establish a dreamlike atmosphere. There is an appealing sense of isolation and mystery to wandering through a heavenly space whose geography does not need to obey ordinary rules. The environments also provide natural opportunities for vertical platforming, hidden routes, and distant landmarks that tempt players to determine whether seemingly inaccessible places can actually be reached. Its relatively compact length is worth considering. A typical playthrough is intended to last roughly three to five hours, although searching for collectibles, experimenting with movement, obtaining upgrades, and completing optional objectives can extend the experience. Players looking for an enormous collectathon may consider this short, but the concentrated structure also helps Angel Essence avoid excessive repetition. The adventure focuses on introducing its movement possibilities, allowing players to develop proficiency and then giving them environments in which those skills matter. Replay value will depend heavily on how much the player enjoys mastering traversal. Someone interested only in reaching the conclusion may have a comparatively brief experience. Players who enjoy refining routes, discovering secrets, completing achievements, and becoming more efficient with movement should find considerably more incentive to revisit areas. The nonlinear structure is particularly useful here because it allows exploration to feel less like progressing through a fixed checklist of stages. Steam Deck compatibility is officially categorized as Playable rather than fully Verified. Performance with the default graphics configuration is considered suitable, and the game can run successfully on SteamOS. However, handheld players should expect compromises. Some functionality is not fully accessible through the default controller configuration, touchscreen interaction or a community controller layout may occasionally be useful, and text entry can require manually opening the virtual keyboard. Some interface text may also appear small, while certain prompts can display keyboard, mouse, or non-Steam Deck controller icons. It is therefore functional on the Deck, but the experience is less seamless than a fully optimized handheld release. The strongest aspect of Angel Essence is how consistently its systems revolve around movement. Exploration rewards better traversal, collectibles provide upgrades, gravity nodes expand navigation possibilities, and combat gives mobility another function. The game understands that movement itself can be entertaining enough to become the main attraction of a platformer. Its shorter duration and specialized focus will not appeal equally to everyone, particularly those seeking a lengthy narrative adventure, but they also prevent the experience from becoming unnecessarily bloated. Angel Essence ultimately presents a promising combination of retro 3D platforming and modern movement mechanics. Its floating-world setting creates an appropriate playground for experimentation, while nonlinear challenges and hidden collectibles provide reasons to test the limits of Angelique's abilities. Players who appreciate compact indie adventures, precision traversal, collectathons, movement optimization, and exploratory platforming are likely to get the most from its unusual heavenly journey. pretty good game with good mechanics.
Excellent 3D schmoovement game. If you liked Pseudoregalia I think you'd love this game. It's got some bugs and kinks to work out but I think it's still really solid despite that.
fun
If you're a fan of Pseudoregalia, this game is an easy recommendation. But even if you've never played it, it's absolutely worth trying. As you unlock new abilities, your moveset keeps expanding, and by the end you'll be pulling off some pretty crazy movements. It took me around five hours to complete, and I honestly enjoyed every minute of it.
Fun game, the allowance for sequence breaking is fun to play with. The controls do get a bit complicated, but once you start engaging with them, it makes sense. Yep! Yep!
Fun stuff! It certainly wears its inspiration on its sleeve -- which inspires certain expectations, and, in my case, let to a bit of frustration with the wall-kick... However, after a while of seeing the new ideas and mechanics this game implements and getting used to everything (mainly, the idea that, just because it does something different from Psudoregalia, doesn't mean it's bad), I quite enjoyed it! It gives you a TON of mobility right off the bat, which allows for some real fun sequence breaks (
in my case, I got the dash before the wall run
) and a lot of freedom to explore. All of the upgrades I found were impactful and worked synergistically with each other. By the endgame I felt like I was playing a Sonic game more than a 3D platformer. There's also a lot of cool tech to discover, which the game (to my knowledge) doesn't explicitly tell you. My only real gripe with the game is the lack of an input buffer. You NEED to be touching the ground for your jump press to count, which can be a bit frustrating (especially with
chaining plummet jumps
). A couple-frame buffer would improve the game a ton, imo. In short, if you enjoyed Psudoregalia and are looking for something to scratch that itch, this is definitely up there. Just keep an open mind that it doesn't play exactly the same.
schmoovy af, optional levels tickle the braincage. play game
Angel Essence is a great 3D platformer with plenty of mobility options. The main path through each area is largely linear, but there are plenty of side paths with secrets to discover and the game is extremely flexible in regards to the order in which you visit areas and acquire mandatory and optional upgrades. Nearly every upgrade significantly increases your movement capabilities and several upgrades have more utility than is initially apparent, encouraging players to experiment and discover the full extend of the options available to them. Progression in general feels great and by the end of the game you can casually fling yourself rapidly across areas which originally felt far more challenging to safely navigate. Simply reaching the end of the game provides a decent, satisfying challenging, but you can sink plenty of hours into using late-game upgrades to find often extremely well-hidden secrets and to take on many significantly more difficult optional challenges. Angel Essence's freeform approach to mobility and general progression makes it a fantastic game for speedrunners and completionists alike. The only area where I feel Angel Essence is lacking is in its combat. The enemies are interesting to look at, but they are consistently nonthreatening. Other than in a certain optional area, enemy attacks cannot harm the player and instead take away some of the resource used as currency, which is a decision I don't have any issue with since the platforming is the focus here. However, enemy attacks are generally so easy to avoid and remove such a small amount of currency that the combat system as a whole ends up feeling completely trivial (other than in the case of an optional boss). This is by no means a dealbreaker since combat is far from this game's focus, but I did sometimes find myself wondering why combat existed at all in the first place.
